More than a month ago, I posted that an offer to DJ for 4 yrs @ $43M - $48M with a little over half guaranteed could probably get it done. I mentioned that I was nervous L. Bell would sign for $15-$16M AY and 50-60% of that guaranteed to establish the market for the "new" 3 down back and increase DJ's price.
Well Todd Gurley just signed 4 yrs extension for $60M AND $45M GUARANTEED !!! ... so $15M APY with a whopping 75% guaranteed. If DJ has a 2016 season (which is better than anything Gurley has done) this year, then his price tag is going to force the Cards to franchise tag him twice (which eats up cap space since no pro-rated bonus) and ultimately pay him more while also letting him go in 2021.

It's nice to see DJ get a benchmark with a comparable talent. It equalizes the leverage in negotiations which is good for both sides in the long run.

It's a great deal for the Rams because Gurley is now signed for 6 years. He's still only 23 years old (turns 24 in August)
DJ will be 27 this year. I agree that we will probably end up giving him the franchise tag next season, but fortunately we'll have the cap room to withstand the large cap hit.
The Steelers situation with Bell ended up working out great for both sides (Bell in the short term). Steelers kept the incentive for Bell to perform.

IMO he has four good years in him and he is our best player on offense. Plus he well help give a young QB time to grow. Give he the same deal or close to it and lock him up.
Sorry Fitz it's an age thing.........

I guess the cards just tag him next year. I don’t think a long term contract is comparable between DJ and Gurly. Big difference in age. In Another post I thought if the cards could sign him to a 3 yr extension worth 36 mil. 20 mil guaranteed, that might get it done. I don’t think it will, now.. so if DJ stays healthy this season and hits 2000 yards running/receiving, he is going to get paid! If he gets hurt or doesn’t hit his goals, it’s still tough to place a value on him. I still think the team should extend him, maybe 40 mil 25 guaranteed 3 years. I just don’t think he is going to get anything better than that because of his age. It’s rolling the dice for both sides. But to franchise him next year is probably what’s going to happen. Big cap hit.

Oh man. The sickening feeling/idea of witnessing another david johnson injury after him getting a mega deal is real.
Such a tough call
I for one want DJ to stay a cardinal for the rest of his career.

While I appreciate this concern, this is nothing like the Honey Badger thing.....( not that you said that, but some are thinking that ) The wrist injury could have happened to anyone and its not a indication of being injury prone. If you have doubts.....watch this video... leg injuryThat looked like a career ending injury. Yet is was only a sprained MCL. The guy is tough..

Why not he hurt his wrist not a leg? length of resume Leveon has 4 complete beast seasons. Gurley has 2.5. David has 1. Yup 1, and his age will be something that the cards may consider. I really like DJ, I truly believe he is a man of integrity, a good man! So if it comes down to David making a decision, I think he loves being a cardinal. And if he did get hurt, after a new deal, even if it is career ending.. He may stay here and still be connected to the community. Do good things here in Phx. After thinking about again, there has to be something it the middle. You just have to take a chance and extend him. It makes the team look cheap. DJ has low mileage on him compared to his age. So I look at his career so far as being underpaid. More important, he is a good dude. Pay the Man!

Tough call on this one. If you give him a long term contract, he will be going to be in his 30’s which is critical for RBs. The advantage we can have with DJ is can play out as a receiver too so maybe that allows him to extend his career. Plus I don’t think he will have 30+ year legs in year 4 because he was injured for a year in the NFL and he redshirted a year in college.

Contract will last through 2020. 14 mil +/- in 2018 16 mil +/- 2019 15 mil +/- 2020 45 mil 30 mil guaranteed. Free Agent in 2020. And if he is still going strong extend him again. If there is a stoppage in 2021, who knows how that’s going to shake out.

DJ will be handsomely paid, but not at Gurley wages. Gurley got $20M upfront signing bonus. But $60M payout total? Ha! Never happen. I'd be surprised if DJ gets half of what Gurley got in his contract extension; or maybe DJ accepts the tag in '19. That would be bad news for DJ . I'm also sure Gurley's contract extension is laden with clause language that also protects the Rams' bottom line. The Rams are at or near their CAP ceiling now. All in '18. Other teams took notes on the Rams / Gurley deal last night. Some on-the-fence players may have to change jerseys to get a career payday. Or accept reality.
