They must have read my post early yesterday where I speculated that the reason DJ was sitting out and Wilkes didn't want to talk about why is because the 2 sides are close to a deal. The wrist injury was a freakish injury and his leg injury only showed he is super-human because 99.999% of all other people on the planet would have torn the ACL/MCL in the Rams game. Instead it ended up just being a minor injury on the last game of the year -- IMO this means DJ's legs are fresh and he should be even more explosive especially considering with a wrist injury his time in the weight room during that time was almost all leg work.
P.S. Relax and be happy -- DJ will get a 3-4 yr contract extension and absorb some of the cap hit for 2018 allowing 2019 - 2020 to be banner years for being active in the FA market. I was more worried that L. Bell would get the Steelers to acquiesce to a LARGE deal that would then prompt DJ's agent to shoot for the moon. I believe a DJ contract would be around 4 yr $39.5 - $41M and $17.5M Guaranteed.

Steve Wilks 1st year HC success depends on David Johnson being a happy camper. The guy is amazing. He's worth NFL top dollar.

I was going to make this exact thread. Tyrann comparisons.
1. Its too early. Theres no reason to pay him right now. (applies to both)
2. Not long enough resume. David has had 1 dominate full season. Tyrann had 1.5 dominate seasons. Not enough proven.
3*. The exception being Tyrann is a DB who blew out his knees twice. David hurt a wrist, its not nearly as devastating.
Pitt has tagged Bell twice. Thats the smart thing to do. If they just want to "do the right thing and pay him" then fine. But its extremely risky and not the smart thing.

Better to sign him now than later. If you don't want to resign now, when should it get done? I rather do it now than possibly create a distraction later on.

I didn't know what to think until I read "entering the final year of his contract".
Good Move IMHO....................

when should it get done? I rather do it now than possibly create a distraction later on. Well, later, obviously. Distractions are overrated. Financial problems are very real. Remember Tyrann? Signed him early. Now we have 19M in dead money. Not saying it would happen with David, but it could. Beanie busted a knee. Ryan Williams busted a knee. RB's play a highly injury prone position. Moreover, at the end of his contract (next year) you can tag him. Then the year after that (2020) you can tag him again if need be. There is 00000000 reason to give him a mega deal today.

If the player wants a mega deal, then walk away. But if they are talking a 2 year extension worth 23 million +/- on top of the existing deal. I think it’s a good deal for both parties. 6.8 signing bonus this year. 7.5 next year (guaranteed) money. Balance of 8.9 (4.45 million guaranteed) in 2020. So in 2018 he would make 8.6 million total, and in 2019 7.5 million, 8.9 million (4.45 guaranteed) in 2020. 25 million total over the next 3 years. 20.5 million guaranteed. This gives the player good security and the team wouldn’t get killed if the player has a career ending injury. You could add incentives totaling 9 million over the 3 years say 2 mil in 2018 3 mil in 2019 and 4 mil in 2020. And personally I hope he would collect every cent. Totaling 34 million.

aaaaaand its official....David is holding out
Adam Schefter Verified account @adamschefter Follow Follow @adamschefter More Cardinals’ RB David Johnson is a holdout for this week’s mandatory minicamp that begins today, per league sources.
The two sides have been in discussions regarding a new contract and are hopeful a new deal will be reached before the start of the season.
98% of the time im in support of holdouts. Leveon Deserves to get paid. Aaron Donald deserves to get paid. Earl Thomas deserves to get paid. All those guys have proven to be superstars year in and year out.
I do NOT support Davids holdout.
You did it for 1 season dude. 1 season does not deserve a mega deal.

I did not expect the "Humble Rumble" to hold out. Man, it seems NO ONE is immune.

I wonder what the club has offered. I agree he has earned an extension, but not a mega deal. It does surprise me a bit, that he is holding out. He is definitely rolling the dice, if the holdout continues he may find himself riding the pine. There is a reason the cards drafted a RB this year. Someone is going to blink, my guess it will be the player. DJ had 1 great year, he may be a great RB. But he hasn’t proved it yet. His age is a factor on a long term deal. It’s unfortunate that he is holding out. I understand business is business. My gut feeling is he just lit a match at the end of that bridge. If he isn’t in camp, he will never get a big contract. I have felt for a while, he would only get a prove it deal if he hits the open market. I don’t think the Cardinals would franchise him. I hope the player will come to his senses, and listened less to his representation. JMHO

I used to really like this kid. But not anymore. He’s all about himself and his money. Stopped following him. Every post was an endorsement. He was on GMFB and when asked what his goal was for season he says “same as it’s always been” I’m thinking he’s gonna says Super bowl. Nope. He says “ 1000 yards rushing, 1000 yards receiving “ all about him.
I agree the kid needs an extension. But a hold out just turned my opinion. Trade him for a 1st rounder. Roll with Chase.
