November 5th is going to be big news due to the U.S. election, but it will also be this year’s NFL trade deadline. Less than 4 weeks!
We are into year two of a rebuild, but already have a potential top 10 offenses (with a few critical injuries), and we are flush with 2024 (6th most?) and 2025 cap space (2nd most).
Within the next week or two we will have a better grasp of whether we are buyers or sellers, and I thought it would be fun to have a thread where we can discuss buy and sell candidates.
My two buy candidates right now are OLB Hassan Reddick from the Jets and then a surprise big get from 1-4 Cincy.
There is a thread currently on our old friend Reddick so I won’t explain myself here other than saying the Jets are at an impasse with Reddick and the only way out I see is a trade where they recoup all or most of their investment, which is a 2026 4th rounder. He’s 30 and has tread on his tires and is a top 5-10 free agent in 2025. Let’s lock down a 10 sack OLB now. He’s played his best ball with Gannon, who unlike Keim/KK will play him in the right position. Give the WR-needy Jets Zay Jones for Reddick to improve the defense the next 3-4 years, and then upgrade Jones with…
WR Tee Higgins. His contract is large for 1-4 rebuild team with about half the cap space we have the next two years, a massive QB contract in Burrow, and another massive WR contract on the way with Chase. Tee is on his 5th year option and will also require a massive contract. Two massive WR contracts alongside a massive QB contract for a rebuilding team is not the way to manage. With MHJ, Wilson and Dortch on cheap contracts, we can afford a big cap hit in the WR room, especially for a still 25 yr old proven stud, 6’-4”, 220 lb target who would immediately make the Higgins, MHJ, Wilson, McBride foursome the most deadly receiving weapon in the NFL. It would take significant assets in trade, but Cincy likely loses him after this lost year for them anyway, so they might deal.
If we get a win in Green Bay, with our schedule softening up in the second half, it might be worth accelerating the rebuild for a playoff shot.
A bonus thought? ILB and former top 5 pick bust Devin White was just released by Philly. Philly coaches still praised him as a man and player, but said he just wasn’t able to win a starting job in their system and it was a business decision to cut him and let him be a free agent. Could Gannon and Rallis be the guys to give him a shot?

Could Gannon and Rallis be the guys to give him a shot? White has a motivation issue. He doesn't seem to want to work hard anymore but wants to be paid based on reputation. If I was Ossenfort, I'd pass on offering White anymore than a plane ticket to a tryout. He brings nothing to the Cardinals that the team needs. Here's what AI has to say about White's past performances and attitude: "White was a standout in his rookie season, starting most games and leading the Buccaneers in tackles. He was also a Pro Bowler in his third season. However, his performance declined in the following years, and he seemed to become oblivious to the idea that his reputation was slipping. White asked for a trade in the offseason and held out during camp, eventually joining the Eagles in free agency. However, the Eagles released him after a down year." Also, check his game stats after the Bucs. His tackles numbers were declining steadily. Either he lost a step on the field, meaning he's too old and slow to chase RBs, or he doesn't want to or can't hustle fast enough anymore. MO: Maybe offer a veteran minimum and see if he bites. That's my best offer.

And would most likely be cheaper than WR Tee H's contract.

There is no way we can trade BB. He's the steel holding the D together.

There is no way we can trade BB. He's the steel holding the D together. Agree. He gets more tackles than others regularly, and offenses must plan against him. So far, that's not true for our other defenders individually.
EXAMPLE: At the 49ers, Baker had 12 solo and 8 combined tackles. Our next best defender was Mack Wilson with 5 solo and 6 combined.
Reason enough to keep an exemplary player on the team, at least through his current contract. So far he shows no signs of slowing down, so let's not be anxious to part ways with a winner at his job.
IMHO

Like Kyler, Baker balls out for his size. But I’m always fascinated that the same people who talk constantly of the negatives of Kyler’s stature let the negatives of Budda’s stature slide. You say offenses plan against him, which is true when it comes to tackle lanes. Would it surprise you to know that Budda has allowed 87% reception success when targeted? That’s a pretty big negative for a DB. At least he then gets the tackle. He is great at some things and poor at others. If a safety is your team’s best defensive player, you’re in trouble. They are the defense of last resort. I think we need to be open to a Budda trade due to his limitations, his age, and mainly his contract. Who makes a safety their second highest cap hit? Who makes their two starting safeties their #2 and #3 top salary cap hits? Answer…no one but the AZ Cardinals.

I would also note that Budda on the field keeps Rabbit off the field.
I’m still not sure if we are a buyer or seller team. We are 2-3 and could well be 2-4 after Sunday, but four of the first six teams we have/will face are currently #3, #6, #7 and #8 in the NFL power rankings. One we were blown out in, but the other two were one ref call or one play away from a different outcome. And of course we have beaten San Fran and LA in our division. We took San Fran out of the top 10 in power rankings. We’ve had a tough schedule and it gets easier second half of the season. Very curious to see how we do against Green Bay.

If another team offered an insane trade package for BB, I'd consider it, but only if a hotshot #2 DB was waiting for his chance to sit on top of the mountain like BB has done for for the Cardinals. Right now, I don't know if that hotshot exists.
BB balls out ever Sunday. That makes him extremely attractive to other teams, especially those teams that might be one player away from true excellence on defense. But given his age, no team is going to make a big investment. The risk is not worth the potential reward.
The downside of trading away the D's best player is that the act sends a strong message to the teammates that the GM will bail out on you for cash and draft picks no matter how much you bleed for the team on Sunday. Families are torn out of schools and neighborhoods. That's the ugly side of the business.

He and KM are equal in stature and not high leapers. His contract is a done deal thanks to neither you nor I, but correct me if wrong, isn't Budda a free agent next year? If so, we would only save the balance of this year's pay if traded. I would also note that Budda on the field keeps Rabbit off the field EDIT: "Rabbit" is the same 5'-10 as KM and BB, but lighter weight. Can he leap higher than Budda to be effective with pass protection? Just wondering what advantage he has other than cost.Wouldn't a little imaginative juggling allow both Rabbit and Budda to play together? I'm no X and O guy by far, but who says one has to play only this or that kind of defensive alignment? Innovate, Rallis! I’m still not sure if we are a buyer or seller team. I think we are still transitional. Neither one nor the other, yet. One new guy likely won't tip the scales enough, but one old guy gone might, in this case. It boils down to what management has for a plan and where they think we are now in that plan. I don't have a clue how that plan may ultimately be set up or when it is figured to pay off. Ignorance isn't bliss in this case.

Ignorance isn't bliss in this case. Cost is the advantage. You can get him on the field but not often when you factor in Jalen Thompson, who is younger than Budda by two years and whose contract only offers $1.7 million cap relief. He’s under contract until 2026 and is the future at one of the safety spots. Rabbit was drafted to replace Budda, a steal at the beginning of the fourth round. Budda is having a great year, but it is a contract year and Thompson has played as well or better than Budda in 2022 and 2023. We’d be foolish to not consider good trade offers for Baker before he hits free agency, and honestly we’d be foolish to give him another big contract as he approaches 30 and we have Rabbit and Thompson coming up behind him. Put the Budda money into Reddick at a position we are truly weak, and slide Rabbit into Budda’s job, and we are a better defense. Budda’s cap can almost all be recovered. Over $15 million (pro-rated). If it’s true we could get a 2025 second rounder and all that cap relief, then turn around and give that cap relief to Reddick and a 2026 fourth rounder to the Jets, it would be a great move. OLB > safety.

OLB > safety. We don't know whether Reddick would even consider returning here, or what his demands would be if so. Also, Reddick is 30, Budda 28 - if age matters. Too many ifs, maybes and unknowns, so I think I'll leave it all up to MO, and just wait and see... then second guess when we see how it all works out.

Make an attempt at Reddick he isn’t worth more than a 3rd. The team can pay both Budda and Reddick if needed … Cards are not in a cap pinch and it is at the point of 6-7 draft picks are all that are needed from year to year and the 2nd round pick is easily converted to a later 2nd and a 3rd or 4th in most drafts. The cap will continue to raise and the K1 contract has become affordable as per QB contracts. OL and DL in future drafts are the primary needs. Picking up Okwara and DRob returning helps DL depth and bodies big enough to stop the run. It comes down to less nickel and more multiple ILBs in the run down formations

The Cardinals next 2 games are critical as to whether the Cards are buyers or sellers as the trade deadline approaches. I’d take this deal in NY minute. Then I’d ratify the trade by taking DL with the iggles pick & hopefully we land the next Dockett.
