2 Time Pro Bowler FB Ron Wolfley Wolfley was Pro-Bowl or All-Pro? Does not matter. He was good. Also, those old-style foam collars always gave me the willies. Guys that wore them were not afraid to run at full into a defender's pads. Some of those guys suffered serious neck and back injuries.

Don Coryell Finally. Don Coryell died July 1, 2010 at 85yo. There is no better Cardinals HC representative to be inducted into the HoF class of 2023. RIP, Don. Twelve years after he died at the age of 85 and 36 years after he coached his last game in the NFL, Don Coryell is one step away from having his bust on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He made Cardinal football fun to watch for this young fan. Me as well. The Coryell years were the best in so many ways. Those years is where the Cardiac Cards got that nickname. Yeah, we didn't make it to the Super Bowl, but we could score on anybody, and our defense wasn't half bad. He did it with a stingy payroll headed up by Joe Sullivan ( actually a pretty good GM. just wasn't allowed to spend much money ), still Coryell made it work.

I just came across this link/article... "No one now wears No. 8 for the Cardinals. It was retired for Hall of Fame safety Larry Wilson"8 days till the Cardinals' 2022 season opener vs. Chiefs
Just some of the pictures you will find there... lol he looks like an old man, but boy he could play. He was and is the best player the cardinals ever had.

How many years will we wait to see current jersey #1 hoisted onto the shoulders of teammates? Murray has the best chance since #8.

Larry led some very stingy defensive units in the mid sixties.

Johnson goes off for 49 pts in 3 quarters. Smitty, thanks for the deep dive into Cardinals history! That was a different kind of Cardinals team. www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/196509260cle.htmI did some digging at PFF. See link. That Cardinals v. Browns game was played at old Cleveland Municipal Stadium on the shores of Lake Erie on September 26, 1965. Lakeside temperature was a chilly 54F. Fall came early for upper Midwesterners. The Browns briefly led on the scoreboard during the start of the second quarter by the score, 10-7. Then the fireworks started for the Cardinals with Johnson completing multiple TD passes and defenders intercepting multiple Browns passes. The next week, the 2-1 Cardinals would take down the upstart Dallas Cowboys, 20-13. Other September 26, 1965 factoids: The Minnesota Twins baseball team earned its 1st American League pennant by defeating the Washington Senators, 2-1. The Twins would eventually lose the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. 1965 Corvette Convertible base price is announced at $4,106. Leather seats $80.70, air conditioning $37.70, 396 cubic inch 425 horsepower engine $107.60. Production run 15,377 cars. #1 song in the US, "Hang on Sloopy" by The McCoys. That song replaced "Help" by the Beatles which was the #1 for three consecutive weeks. If you were born on September 26, 1965, and assuming that you slept 8 hours per day, you slept away the equivalent of 19.01 years of your life by September 26, 2022.

I couldn't help but to notice this in your link, Jackie Smith was listed as the punter. That was pretty much the time I started following the Cards. He was the Cards punter for three years, so he wasn't an emergency backup punter. The reason I bring this up, I was wondering when the last time a starter at another position was also the punter. I don't know but I bet it's been some time. This picture is taken from this article.... Jackie Smith Demonstrates PuntingI'm going to try to post a twitter link...I hope I get it right....lol...hang on...that didn't work....lol Okay....got it....why are tweets so hard??

I just thought I would add this. That link I posted in my post above is an excellent source to find old photos that you may not find anywhere else. This is from the same link/source UMSL Digital LibraryIt has all kinds of historic photos from the St Louis area...I'm not from St Louis, but close enough to enjoy looking through their archives on all kinds of things. Using the advanced search option, I found 5 pages of rare photos of the football Cardinals UMSL Digital Library football Cardinals
They are kind of hard to post since you can't use a direct link, but here are a couple... Jim Otis ( I would mind having him today ) Mel Gray and Don Coryell One of the best offensive lines ever....from left: Roger Finnie, Tom Banks, Conrad Dobler, Bob Young and Dan Dierdorf. Instructing them is Jim Hanifan, who was then the offensive line coach under Don Coryell.

Almost 40 years ago... The 49ers again beat up the Cardinals on Nov 21, 1982. This 49ers team, led by Joe Montana, also won the SB in 1981. The video is about 28 minutes. Cardinals highlights include QB Jim Hart, WR Mel Gray, and RB OJ Anderson. I noted Anderson's huge pads and that jersey...size XXXXXXL? He is wearing jersey the size of a genoa sail. Jim Hart rarely took snaps in the shotgun. He used the shotgun a bunch in this game. The 49ers blitz was good. The Busch Stadium turf was brutal on players bodies. The turf and substructure was designed for the baseball team, not the football team. I never got to see Joe Montana play football at STL despite attending many home games in college. I would have gone to this game but was deployed as Ensign (not PutMeIn) on a USN aircraft carrier at the western Pacific Ocean or Indian Ocean at the time. STL fans don't care anymore about the football Cardinals by 1982. Team losing seems endless. Bill Bidwill sees other owners raking in millions a year and he cannot even sell cheap tickets to see the current NFL world champions play the Cardinals. At kickoff on this day, 1000s of seats are unsold or at least empty. Just 38,000 seats were filled that day. About 15,000 seats were empty at kickoff. Oddly, the 1982 team (record 5-4) would make the NFC playoffs as a Wild Card, but lose to the Packers in the playoff game. The Cardinals won just 1 game at home in 1982. That was not a good Cardinals team. The fans knew it. Click image to enlarge.
