Cash rich teams, we're not one of them. These teams aren't competing on the same level Its evident that most people associated with the game are not fully aware of the CAP and the ways used to manipulate the system. The answer I see is to tighten up the rules to cut out some of these practices. For example, creating 'phantom years' beyond the players likely career seems an out and out abuse. Why not extend these by 20/ 30 years for example? Ridiculous maybe, but I think you could label it up as 'paying a pension' and the guy only needs to stay alive to reap the benefit.

and another thing.
If the larger football fanbase comes to fully appreciate what is going on (and realizes that it is nowhere near a level playing field between the teams) then the game itself will suffer. People want to know that each team has a genuine chance to succeed and the structures and not warped to enable the richest to prosper at the expense of their own favorite team.

We need one of those rich Walton kids to buy our team. Welcome to the Arms Race.... In this country a fanbase will salivate if one of the richest X persons in the world is seeking a take over their football (soccer) club. In all of these cases the people buying in have no past affiliation and are commonly driven by a purely commercial decision, or in some cases maybe to acquire 'a plaything' (like a luxury yacht). In an unregulated situation where there are no real limits on what each can spend (principally on transfer fees and player wages) then you are then left with only a few teams who have a genuine chance of the ultimate success. For those people who follow the English Premier League then you might wish to quote Leicester City from a few years back, but believe me this instance wont be repeated in a hurry. The danger in all of this is that the NFL ends up operating in a corrupted system, which allows for (perhaps) six to eight teams who are using their financial clout to routinely spend more than their competitors. I'm not saying we are there yet, but it can easily become a slippery slope. In short, these 'financial loopholes' could well become a cancer in the game and I don't believe the good old general American public would sit around watching and stomach it.

I’m glad to finally understand how it’s been happening. This offseason in particular, I could not understand how the Rams were signing all these players and the Cards couldn’t even hold on to theirs, much less sign anyone of note.
This feels like a serious loophole that’s going to need to be addressed, otherwise the salary cap is completely pointless

This feels like a serious loophole that’s going to need to be addressed, otherwise the salary cap is completely pointless It feels like heading off into space. At first there is a strict order (gravity) holding everything in its place, but gradually (as you drift further away from planet earth) you look around and things are free-floating with no rules, regulation or any control. The powers that be need to keep a firm grip by imposing strict rules and setting boundaries, and then rigorously enforcing these.

I don't want to hear about owner's inability to keep up with big market teams. The NFL pools majority of funds and every team is in the black as per making money. The problem is some small minded owners who don't want to dig into the profits and pay players like the Rams do. AZ is buying Jets and getting help from community for the stadium and has been selling plenty of tickets to warrant putting more money into player contracts. Tired of the poor billionaires needing welfare to survive. If a owner is majority owner of team then he is a billionaire based solely on going price of teams.
The above video shows manipulating cap by $20-$40M per year so even doubling that isn't breaking the billionaire's bank. No excuses for AZ not to double down on players.

Wow, cash over CAP. I had no idea that wealthy owners were rigging the FA process in their favor. We're back to the pre-CAP crap whereby the rich boys get their way with players, advertisers, and schedulers. This cash payout problem is bad news for cash poor teams.

The powerful always find the loopholes, and if they don’t they create them and make sure only they can use them.

The powerful always find the loopholes, and if they don’t they create them and make sure only they can use them. Then we review these on an annual basis and either shut down any that are outside the rules, or set a firm boundary as to what is and what is not allowable. The governing authorities of the game need to be 'fair & vigilant' and perhaps it will be found that a good number of the practices being employed are fine and proper. At least all teams are then aware and there is full transparency and understanding by my all (clubs, professional commentators and the fanbase).

Also, I seriously love that it’s freaking Pat McAfee that’s bringing so much attention to this
You can tell how much people really enjoy being on the show, so much more entertaining than watching the cheesy, cliche interviews on ESPN or whatever
