This whole thing is so to me. If we were going into the season thinking we are contenders, I could see the reasoning for staying with Dawson. I have no idea how good or bad McCrane might be. But dam, he did all he could do in preseason. Just say we kept him and he didn't turn out that good....so what. We could sign someone else. At least he had potential and might even become a star. We had nothing to loose by giving him a chance. Now were stuck with some old guy past his prime that has no future potential at all...dumb...dumb...dumb.. We are rebuilding. We don't need people at the end of their careers. We need young people who might turn out to be something. Like Fitzgerald at a premium?
If I understand your point, yes. Use picks/salary on the unique talents who can help for the long term, like Fitz has done. (but is his ability starting to slip now?) If you mean pay them like a Diva of the opera, no. Reasonable pay - if such a thing will even happen again.
Having scouts and decision makers in the organization who can spot and act to acquire those gems is something else, though. I think Denny G was responsible for Fitz' pick (?) but we don't have his equivalent in the house at the moment... IMO.

First of all, I do not like Dawson. I didnt like him last year. Talk about frustrating, the guy had his most misses ever last year and he also had his most makes. He had some 4 fg games he was on fire. And he missed some HUGE ones. I understood why some wanted McCrane, but how dramatic it got over him was a bit odd. You saw some a small sample size and yeah he was perfect with one bouncing off crossbar. An inch the other way and he has a miss. Does anyone remember any kick offs by McCrane? I do not know if they are asking Dawson to kick short or if he just cant kick it deep into end zone at this point. McCrane also missed two kicks yesterday for all those that think he is Mr Perfect. He just happened to hit a 29 yard game winner. I would imagine Raiders kicker comes back healthy and McCrane becomes avail in a few weeks. I would also look at Zane Gonzalez who would kick better indoors here. As I recall every McCrane kickoff was an immediate "don't bother" from the returner as it sailed to the ball boys. So maybe McCrane isn't the guy, we will have to see in the week(s) ahead with Oakland. As for Gonzalez, I guess he was hurt at Cleveland and Amos didn't bother to tell Hue, or something like that. Who cares, if he's healthy now bring him in to audition for Grandpa's job. By the way, how is the bloated alcoholic coming on getting the guys in here? Or maybe we're going to play that game, AGAIN, where the bloated drunk takes to the airwaves and tells us we're all idiots for thinking Grandpa needs to hit the road or at a minimum audition to keep his job. If we bring in five guys and Grandpa outkicks all of them then the talent pool is toast and Grandpa stays, but enough whistling past the graveyard.
After Gonzalez got cut by the Browns but before it was disclosed he was hurt I looked at his pre-Amos numbers from 2017 and compared to 2018. Of course much better in 2017, but with the small sample size and injury issue I will give Amos the benefit of the doubt.

It's not even a slam at Fitzgeral per se, just simple salary cap reality. Fitzgerald has always been paid a premium to stay here, which might just be why he has and leads me to remind everyone to steer clear of "poor Fitz" stuff for a guy who's been paid millions upon millions to VOLUNTARILY sign contracts. Is it smart to pay a premium for an aging WR to stay here because he gives everyone warm fuzzies and the chance to chant his name on Sundays?

I just heard that Dawson is last in touch backs. Again, not sure if that is on purpose or not, but you are giving the other team another chance at making a play and that is just not something we should be doing.

With the rule changes it is probably better not to have a touchback to kick to the 1 yard line and stop them before reaching the 25. A million things have to go right and coaches usually put someone they don't mind gets hurt rather than their truly best kick returner.

We are last in touch backs which means, we are doing what you think is best. We hardly have any returns because most are touch backs and your theory would say we are better off with that. We are 0-4, Hardly at the fault of the kick offs, we simply have not even had enough to matter, but talking 5 yards or so you can possibly save to not give them another opportunity isn’t worth it to me. I dont trust our tackling enough.

Is this a new thread or a reboot from the preseason? All that's left to do now is have McCrane boot a 58 yarder at the gun to beat the Cardinals when the two teams meet later in the year. Especially if Grandpa misses a couple of 40-somethings.
Not so far fetched a conjecture.

I think the 25-yard line touchback added another element of strategy for coaches. If the kick coverage unit is top notch then I can see it being very smart to kick short and let the guys go down and stop the return man at the 20 or less. At the other end of the spectrum, if it's a coverage unit coached by Amos Jones, of course bring in a kicker who could kick a football full of lead out of the end zone.

"Face of the franchise" is a bit overdone in terms of payroll. I feel that was involved with the Badger payoff too, but that is for the guy with the money to decide. If it impacts what the rest of the team becomes due to inability to pay them, then it is a poor business decision when viewed from a win/loss perspective. How the Cards do on the business side (meaning having the ability to pay for a better grade of team talent) is another topic.
This trend to pay exorbitant amounts to the "super stars" is only one of the self-inflicted wounds by the NFL - - - IMO.

Keim has too much BA in him. Hes a boys club guy. He wont cut his guys and he wont cut his bust draft picks.
Mcrane was easily the better kicker in pre season. Young. Boomin leg. Accurate.
I wont stop pounding the fire Keim drum till hes gone.

From the standpoint of filling seats and selling season tickets, probably so. He has a huge following among the ladies.
From the winning games perspective after this season, maybe not. I think there has been too much reliance on the "we always have Fitz" thinking when it comes to WRs and receivers in general. He won't be here that much longer as Mr. Old Reliable and I don't see any successor yet. He seems to have recurring problems with his hamstrings of late, for one thing.
I hope Fitz goes out as a winner rather than a has been, but that's just me. I know he would like to have records, but two drops/misses in one game is not a good omen for someone who has been stellar in the past. Can't blame a hamstring for balls delivered to the hands. Hopefully he just needs more adjustment to Rosen's delivery.

Exactly. The Cardinals just can't completely shake all of the same old Cardinals stain. That said, if the paying customers demand their overpaid Fitz on Sundays it is completely logical for the business to provide it. I am the ultimate proud capitalist pig. I doubt the lovely ladies swooning over the great one spend much time pondering the salary cap implications of having so much green stuff tied up in the great one.
