Lost a lot of respect for Wilks with the McCrane release. He said the best 53 would make the team. McCrane was better than Dawson. Plus he has a future where Dawson is 43 and just about at the end of his career. This cut doesn't make any sense to me what so ever. McCrane was the better kicker and has a much stronger leg. He is also very accurate. Plus a lot cheaper and he could be around for years to come. Not like Dawsom who is just about through.

I thought he did enough in preseason to get the nod over Dawson.

The money for Dawson is already spent.. can get it back, even if he is cut.. the question is, do you want to spend an additional 500k on the kicker position.. Wilks didn’t have anything to do with Dawson’s signing.. he inherited that contract.. if the cap space isn’t there, it just isn’t there..

McCrane has never had to face a pressure kick. A few years back we went with a rookie snapper who did everything right in camp and preseason and then chocked on the big stage. Wilks loses no respect from me for making the OBVIOUS choice.

Yea. Dawson missed a 55 yarder. McCrane made both a 53 and a 54 yarder with plenty to spare. Say that again when Dawson misses a game deciding FG this year from 50 + yards.
It's not like the Cards are super bowl favorites. I'm hoping they get to 8 and 8, because this team has a lot of holes to fill on both sides of the ball. You go with the kid in hopes that he will turn out to be a great kicker in a year. And with this dink and dunk offense I think there will be a lot of field goals that have to be made.

Meh, I don't think I would ever base the amount of respect I give a coach on what kicker they kept...

Remember Baker, Amos Jones and BA? A classic case.

you should realize its probably 70% Keim making these decisions, not Wilks.
Keim and Wilks sit and have discussions, but ultimately its Keim. If it were up to Wilks there would be ALOT of guys gone. Wilks didnt pick Nkemdiche or Reddick or Brandon or any of these busts. But Keim protects them.
Im sure Wilks does want Mccrane. But Keim supercedes him, and of course kept Dawson.

But I always felt that BA held an ace or two over SK while here - maybe contract related. Who you think made the Dawson over McCrane final decision? Just curious.

If you can guarantee that the kid will make 53, 54 yarders when it matters and the old will miss at 55, I'm with you, but, as you well know, you can't. And most FGS to be made will be between 35 / 45 and I'll trust the guy with experience as do the Cards.

BA was also a former Coach of the Year before arriving to Arizona. Wilks has never even been a interim head coach.

Could be one of the aces. Wilks has not had time to build up his own hand, or fold. Too premature to predict but so far, so good.
