Early in game 3 of the pre-season, Dawson misses a 55 yarder. No big deal, its not a big minus on the guy... just not a positive either.
Later in the same game, McCrane gets a 54 yarder right down the middle with probably 6 yards to spare. And what does the man do on the very next kickoff? He accurately hits the ball to the corner of the endzone so there's no chance of return.
Obviously we don't know what the competition is like in practice, but in game, McCrane has been more consistent than the 43 year-old Dawson.
Keep the rookie and let him rack up the points scored along with Rosen and Kirk for their entire careers.

I feel like we're still in the mindset of the BA era of keeping guys because of loyalty despite there being better options. Steve Wilk's Cardinals seems much more like a meritocracy than BA's was.

Remember Cat man? He also hit everything and then lost his confidence. Having said that, I would keep McCrane because of Dawsons age.

Time to keep the young guy and have him ready for things to come. I would love to see a SB run but please we don't need a 42 year old kicker and cut what very well could be our future for years to come.

I dont like Dawsons smug "Im the kicker no matter what" face.
I would take the kid. Has a boomer leg.

Even though he clapped after McCrane made that 54 yard field goal, the look on his face didn't look supportive at all. Regardless of how he has looked in practice, the rookie is 3 for 3 (two of them more than 50-yards) this preseason while old man Dawson is 2 for 4.

Until he doesn't. The only question is when - - -
Despite my initial reservations about McCrane's weight and stature, he is showing undeniable talent. I would hate for the team to lose the opportunity knocking on the door and be kicker poor next year, or next month, or whenever. I like Dawson and wish him well, but I hope we take the future into consideration.
Still one more PS game to compare them, but I think the wall is showing traces of handwriting already. Or is it graffiti?

I'm not ready to trust him under the pressure of an important game... and I'm believing that there will be "important games" this season. How absurd is it to have two kickers on the roster? Maybe they should have kept his skill hidden from other teams during the preseason and safely hid him away on the practice squad.

And you would trust Dawson to make a game winning kick after last season? Dawson put all of his faults last season on Jones and how the ST unit was set up, no sure what excuse he has this preseason. I said it from the start, if McCrane looks the part, cut Dawson, save yourself $3m and sign this kid up and hopefully not have to worry about the position for 10 years. Even if we stick with Dawson, we are going to be in the same position next offseason but likely without another young really talented kicker on the team.

Again, it’s the same situation as Glennon. Dawson is under contract, the cards are contractual obligated. He is going to be getting game checks, unless the team could trade Dawson. I think Dawson will be on the team. He’s a good kicker, the rookie hasn’t played in a game that matters. Dawson has, for like 18 years..

Remember Cat man? He also hit everything and then lost his confidence. Having said that, I would keep McCrane because of Dawsons age. Cat was better than Dawson last year. Dawson was a hot mess on kicks between 30 and 39 yards last year and missed 3 extra points. Cat had a nice year last year and Dawson was far from automatic. I get that Cat was canned to coverup the hot mess of the 2016 season. If were going to go with a rookie, this is a good year to do it. Low expectations, new staff and were building toward the future. Dawson is probably gone after this year. It would be nice to not be holding tryouts in training camp next year. I think you're spot on about his age.

And he's showing that he is now on the down side of the bell curve, too. He began to slip last year and so far this year his record is not great with FGs.
I like the guy and pull for old guys in general, but to be a winner we have to be a bit cold at times, too. Time to look to the future, not at the past - meaning Dawson was a good one for a long time, but all good things come to an end. This is a change from my previous thinking, but there is no way to avoid being realistic: Dawson is slipping, and I can't see time doing anything to change that for the better. Good luck, Phil. It was great while it lasted, but it's time to say goodbye.

It’s very possible that he gets cut..if they cut Glennon and Dawson sign both the rookies. If we have the cap room.. it’s around 1 million for both..

I don't think the value of his contract would be something going in his favor...
