A week ago, about mid-January 2023, I wore my Cardinals baseball cap with the Cardinals embossed red bird head to a major grocery store chain located at Virginia Beach, VA. While going through the checkout line, the elderly clerk who was about 65-70 years old remarked that he liked my football team cap. He added this was the first time he had ever seen a Cardinals hat and a Cardinals fan in the same place at the same time. I remarked that I am a Cardinals football fan since the late 1960s. We talked for a few minutes and he said he is a former Redskins fan also for many decades. Being spotted by a knowing NFL team fan made me feel good. We also know reality. My current team is invisible and his former team is invisible. That day, we were the Invisible Men.
The Commonwealth of Virginia is not a hot-bed of Arizona Cardinals football enthusiasm. The Cardinals rarely make the local TV broadcast and only get visibility when the new Commanders are scheduled with the Cardinals for Sunday fare. While working in the DC area for over 20 years, I rarely saw a Cardinals logo on a TV ad or a truck back window on the street. No Cardinals fan every appeared at a sports bar. It was like we did not exist. And that area is a major mixing pot for all sports teams from the huge NFL to the tiny MLS.
I wonder, does Bidwill promote his team outside the immediate AZ viewing area? I also ask you, what has been your experience when traveling outside AZ and wearing Cardinals gear. Did anyone say, "Hi Cardinals fan, welcome to the great frozen north and Bills Land!", etc.
