www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/32400892/mike-shildt-st-louis-cardinals-manager-sources-sayBizarre announcement: Mike Shildt was fired from his STL Cardinals manager job on Thursday, October 14. Why? "Philosophical differences" with the front office staff was reported. No doubt about it, Shildt got lucky with the 17-game winning streak, resulting in the Cardinals locking up the #2 Wild Card spot the last week of the regular season. The team got into the playoffs, and then were knocked out of the 1-game playoff by a Dodgers walk-off homerun in the 9th inning. I did not pay a much of attention to MLB and the National League until late September. I knew from discussions with Midwest family members who love the STL Cardinals that the team was struggling throughout the season. Nagging injuries to starters and constant IR seemed the biggest reason the Cardinals did not win more games. Perhaps Shildt made a demand to senior management to jettison some older players in favor of younger players. If Shildt demanded a roster change, and was told he was coloring outside the lines, that could get him fired. Too bad. Firing a winning field manager is always a bad sign for an organization. P

Thanks for the post. Interesting for sure. Just like the AZ Card fans fire SK & KK, the STL groups I'm in have the fire MO & MS petitions going. I know I heard somewhere the day before they would not be picking up M. Carpenter & Carlos Martínez's 2022 options (saving 35+ Mil in 2022),but nothing official that I've seen. I have also watched MLB network talking heads say 1. The FO has someone else they think will take them farther into the playoffs next year, or 2. There were some high profile Card vet players that complained to MO in the FO about him. MLB network heads say it's shocking to say the least since MS had them in the playoff the 3 years he's been the manager. The FO say's they will have a new manager pinned down no later than mid-November. Maybe Matt Carpenter him self? LOL!!! We'll see...

Major League Baseball is a billion-dollar business. Baseball includes human relations. Some decisions regarding the business's employees are head-scratchers. Shildt's firing is a clear example of something amiss internal to the STL organization.
The STL Cardinals apparently believe the team can stay atop the Division in 2022 without the former manager that just got the team into the playoffs again, and the 3rd year in a row. I think major financial decisions involving player contracts are mixed in with the manager firing decision. Perhaps an overconfident Shildt said to his boss, "X player is not good enough for me. Get rid of him." The GM says back, "I like X player. He's affordable. BTW, I don't like your holier-than-thou attitude around here. You are arrogant and also fired."

Shame to lose Schildt but that is the way baseball is
Joe Torre could not win the Division as the Cardinals manager but he later won the World Series with the Yankees.

Shame to lose Schildt but that is the way baseball is Joe Torre could not win the Division as the Cardinals manager but he later won the World Series with the Yankees. FLCF, That is absolutely true about Manager Torre. He was stuck with a terrible baseball team for years. He then moved on and rebuilt the Yankees into a powerhouse team. October 26, STL Cardinals Announces New Field Manager: "The St. Louis Cardinals have a new manager, and it’s a familiar face. Oliver Marmol, who most recently served as the bench coach for recently-fired manager Mike Shildt, on Monday was named the next manager of the Cardinals. At 35 years old, he’s now the youngest manager in the major leagues." The last time the Cardinals had a field manager that young was 1951. The Cardinals did not sniff the playoffs again until 1964 when the team shocked MLB and won it all at the World Series. The Arizona Cardinals convinced Triple A infielder Kyler Murray to sign up to play NFL football. He listened well to his mentors. That's another good baseball story.

Coming back to this Cardinal manager thread. I find it funny that fired manager Mike Schildt is 1 of 3 finalist for manager of the year... You can't make this stuff up!

Coming back to this Cardinal manager thread. I find it funny that fired manager Mike Schildt is 1 of 3 finalist for manager of the year... You can't make this stuff up! Sometimes, a business commits suicide thinking that's a good fix for it's problems. Suicide will not work for the Cardinals. Mike Schildt is the modern version Yankees' Billy Martin and his fued with owner George Steinbrenner. It was obvious to me at least that Shildt made an insider power move. probably demanding that some players be cut, and the GM did not like Shildt dabbling in GM stuff. Schildt brought in some younger and unproven talent from AAA in September and these guys really outshined the theam elders. I hope Shildt does get MOY in 2021. That will be so embarrassing for the Cardinals organization.
