Next February there will be a new football league called the AAF. The following year, the XFL will start. Will this be two new tails of failure, will the NFL have a new competitor, or will these leagues find a new niche?

I think one can survive for a time but two no way. Frankly I would love a spring football league.

The AAF timing is interesting. starting one week after the super bowl and ending right around draft day.
Could potential draftees that aren't highly valued play in the AAF to improve their draft stock?

But if they are getting paid are they still eligible for the draft?

They can also do commercial deals with brands like Nike or Under Armour once their NCAA career is finished, can't they?

What it will probably mean is there will be a bunch of no name undrafted rookies trying to raise their stock before the draft. Once their college career is done it is done since NCAA rules no longer apply.

History has shown that they usually don't make it. I hope at least one of them can somehow do it. The timing is right for it. NFL ratings have been going down. It would be cool to have football year round.

The looming lockout/strike for the NFL makes the XFL seem even smarter. The XFL will get a season to work out the kinks and iron out the wrinkles before it basically becomes the replacement league.
