Greetings Birdgang and the Cardinals Nation! Our 0-4 Arizona Cardinals after extensive adjustments in practice the past week, try to avoid staying winless, as they are in Santa Clara, California, to play the San Francisco 49ers, in this afternoon's 54th all-time meeting.
Cardinals have not lost four straight games to start their NFL Regular Season since losing the 1986 St. Louis Football Cardinals lost their first five games at 0-5. The 1978 St. Louis Football Cardinals also began their season losing their first seven games at 0-7.
Despite being the only winless NFL team heading into Week 5, the Cardinals have two advantages in their competition with the 49ers this season. Arizona has won 7 of the last eight regular season games over San Francisco since the September 2014, including winning the last six games and home and away sweeps over the 49ers the past three years, and by chance and timing will not see QB Jimmy Garoppolo leading his 49ers offense on the field again in 2018. Garoppolo is already out for the season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee, after he scrambled to the sidelines on Week 3 at Kansas City.
Cardinals played a winless 49ers team in Glendale, in their first meeting played at then University Of Phoenix Stadium back on October 1, 2017. Both teams tied 12-12 after regulation. In overtime, San Francisco scored first with Robbie Gould's 23 yard field goal. Arizona won the game in OT in the next series when Carson Palmer threw his 19-yard TD pass to Larry Fitzgerald, to win 18-12 in OT, and left San Francisco's record at the time at 0-4.
Arizona later visited Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, for the rematch with San Francisco back on November 5, 2017. Drew Stanton started for an injured Carson Palmer at QB, and helped the Cardinals in the first half by throwing two touchdown passes, 3 yards to Jaron Brown, and 11 yards to Jermaine Gresham. Phil Dawson followed each TD with his PAT's in his return to Santa Clara as a Cardinal, and later kicked two field goal from 25 and 32 yards in the fourth quarter, to make the final score 20-10. The loss left the 49ers with their 0-9 record.
New England traded Garoppolo to San Francisco the weekend prior on October 31, 2017, and was in uniform and in the sidelines for the 49ers as Casey Jarrett Beathard's backup in the 49ers game with the Cardinals the following weekend at Levi's Stadium, but he did not play, still learning Kyle Shanahan's playbook at the time.
San Francisco despite their six game losing streak, still leads the series over Arizona with their 29 win and 24 loss record, dating back to 1950.
