I never have liked that strategy and just goes to show how inept Mike McCoy is in play calling. Josh Rosen was performing excellent if you take out the 4 dropped passes including the 1 Fitz dropped. David Johnson is a good running back but is not being used like he should. Why run it with two minutes to go in the game to set up the field goal with plenty of time on the clock for the Seahawks?
I mean the screens were working very good and getting the passes in the flat were working very good why not keep the momentum going.
To quote ASU head coach Herm Edwards, “You play to win the game!” Going for a field goal with that much time on the clock is . Or should I say setting it up for a field goal with that much time on the clock is .
Mike McCoy needs to be fired.

I think they should have tried for a closer field goal. The closer you are the better your odds are but too many times once they are in field goal attempt range they settle when they should be trying to get as close a field goal as possible.

One angle to it is that after kickers miss the inevitable bitching comes from the "skill players" about how a lousy kicker lost them the game. To which I say go out there and win the damn thing so you don't need to worry about the kicker. Now there are exceptions to the rule, for example when kickers are pretty much automatic like Justin Tucker. Grandpa was clearly not that guy after the first miss.
Anyway, you're right.

No we shouldn’t have even had to try a field goal. Should have passed it in the flat or screen pass or anything as it was working and the counter runs were dormant. You play to WIN the game! |

Either way they should have been advancing as close to the goal line as possible instead of trying to run the clock (but leave them enough time) with 3 straight runs that far out. |
