I realize we're all buried in a lot of negatives with our team. I thought I'd offer one positive I found looking at the stats.
I knew switching to the 4-3 would have it's difficulties (I just didn't think it would be that bad against Washington). My main concern with the new staff would be what is our staple. What's our identity? (Besides losing).
I noticed that we honed in on Gurley in game 2. Actually we did a remarkable job on him. He ran over the Chargers and Raiders getting 100+ yards in each. However, we held him to 19 carries for 42 yards. That's a 2.2 average; well below his 4.1 for the season.
We also did a nice job of shutting down Howard. We held him to 2.5 a carry; he's averaging 3.4.
Minus the dreadful Washington game where DBuc was abused at LB, we seem to be doing quite well against the starting RB. (Backups with speed are a whole other negative) But even if we include APs numbers against us, we are averaging 2.9 yards per carry against the starting RB. That's a respectable number. I'm not sure where it ranks but I imagine it's pretty high.
If I were a new HC, the first identity I would have is "no one runs on us". I'm a firm believer in stopping the run.
While we can't say that now, because of our ineptitude at stopping the backup RB, we are trending positively in the area. If we only look at Total Yards Rushing, we are currently at an embarassing 131.3 yards per game, ranked #29. However, if you consider how awful the Offense has been and how much time our D has been on the field we can cut them some slack. Total rushing numbers are often skewed by ToP.
The good news is we are ranked #11 in Yards per Carry (3.7).
I know it isn't much, but these days I'll take any good news.
