It is with heartfelt sadness that I bring Cardinal fans the news that Jim Hanifan has passed away.
Many of the fans here in Arizona may not know much about Jim Hanifan. Let me say this. If he was our offensive line coach today you would treasure this guy.
He was the epitome of a right hand man as a coach. Coach Don Coryell would probably say that today.
I'm not going to go into his coaching before and after his time with the CARDINALS. I will leave that to the links of the various news outlets.
Here is what I can say about Jim Hanifan. He was a player's coach. In the end, that is probably what cost him his head coaching job when he earned the job of head coach.
Jim Hanifan's legacy is what he did to build the Cardinals offensive line into the most respected unit in the NFL. Jim knew how to motivate his players and how to coach them above their own ability. Tom Banks and Conrad Dobler were not special players He made them special. The entire line became so great Jim Hart was sacked only 8 times in the 1975 season. In fact he went several games into the next season before he was sacked.
If you ever have the chance go back and watch Terry Metcalf's You tube videos. The offensive line never quit blocking on a play. Jim Hanifan later became head coach of the CARDINALS The players lobbied for him to get the job. In the end, the players let him down.
He made so many great players Bob Young LG and Tom Brahaney Center are just a few others.
The first video (75 PRO BOWL) has A sight that amazes me to this day.
The 1975 NFL Pro Bowl
Starting offensive lineups
Center Tom Banks Cardinals Right Guard Conrad Dobler Cardinals Right Tackle Dan Dierdorf Cardinals
That is right the entire right side of the offensive line were St Louis Cardinals.
Quarterback Jim Hart Cardinals Runningback Terry Metcalf Cardinals Wide Receiver Mel Gray Cardinals Fullback Jim Otis Cardinals
Kicker Jim Bakken Cardinals Cornerback Roger Wherli Cardinals

I was very sorry to hear about this. I remember his Cardinal days well. He may not have been a great HC, but his abilities to coach offensive lineman were about as good as it gets.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_PatriciaJH was indeed a dream lineman coach. Moving on, and no disrespect intended, if DET's HC Matt Patricia gets whacked in January, what do you guys think about him as a potential DC replacement at ARZ? I'm done with Vance Joseph as are many of you. I think that the Ford family is about done with Matt Patricia too and he will need a new job somewhere. Why not sunny AZ? Patricia did really well as a DC and Asst to BB at NE for a decade. The Cardinals have not had a decent DC since the early Arians era.

Hanifan #4 all time in coaching wins for the Big Red. He was no Steve Wilkes. For any past Cardinals HC to be worse than Wilks short career, the past HC needs 0-2 wins total. Wilks had 3 wins in 1 year. The HC turnover list is long unfortunately. Some HC's inherited terrible teams from fired coaches. Some were just awful from day one. The rogue's gallery -- Fred Gillies, 1 win, 1928 Roy Andrews, 0 win, 1931 Jack Chevigny, 2 wins, 1932 Ernie Nevers, 1 win, 1939 Phil Handler, 0 win, 1943 Phil Handler, Walt Kiesling, 0 win, 1944 Phil Handler, 0 win, 1945 Cecil Isbell, 1 win, 1951 Ray Willsey, Ray Prochaska, Chuck Drulis, 2 wins, 1961 Larry Wilson, 2 wins, 1979 (he finished the '79 season for Bud Wilkerson) Hank Kuhlmann, 0 wins, 1989 (he finished the '89 season for Gene Stallings)

I'd take my chances with his players in a straight up brawl rather than take on the Big Irishman himself. Hanifan was one intimidating looking dude with that scowl while lumbering up and down the sidelines.
