BA came right out and said we would take at least (6) shots at chunk plays per game. Whether successful or not was not the point. But promising to attempt at least taking the top off the defense, helped open the box and intermediate routes benefiting both the running game and passing game. We take no shots now. We do not stretch the defense at all and we certainly do not take the top off the defense. The box is stacked against the run and there is no room to run crossing routes or intermediate routes in the east/west offense McCoy seems to favor. Now...having a wide receiver capable of running deep routes is essential. A line to protect long enough for such routes is also essential. A QB with enough arm talent is also essential. And finally, an offensive coordinator willing to dial up such plays is vital. We do not even attempt a pass beyond 30 yards!!! Our offense is predictable, easy to defend against and creates no ability to run against a stacked box or run west coast passing routes because we simply do not attack deep at all!!! We don't even try...so there is no threat that we will. BA got critized at the end of his tenure for not adjusting his big play offense to shorter more intermediate routes when defenses took away the deep threat. Well, McCoy must shoulder the criticism now for not adjusting to any deep passing attack whatsoever in any of his play calls.

Taking the top off the defense is literally the only thing JJ Nelson is there to do, why even keep him on the team if you’re not going to take a couple shots?

Send him running down the field to drop a ball or get outjumped by a tall, 5'8" defender for the INT. At least us fans can jump up and down in glee watching the ball fly far! |

Listen...I'm not going to defend whether JJ is the best deep threat to use...but the point of the post is you need to attack deep to open up the box for the run and whatever West Coast passing attack you desire to try...much like play action pass will never work if you don't try and establish the run.

Well unless we start taking some shots down the field were going to be looking at 11 defenders with in 10 yards of the LOS. That makes every running and passing play harder to get anything out of.
I was never in favor of BA's style of offense, but you still need to take a couple shots down the field each game. If for nothing more than to loosen up the defense. Most O coordinators set up their shots down the field using other plays. Seems like McCoy missed that class on how to be an O coordinator.
So until we take some shots down the field we are looking at a stacked defense. Less room for DJ to run and less room for those shorter passes. |

Now we have a Total unknown that is floundering. Maybe this ship will get righted maybe not. Can not tell anything about what It "might" evolve into at this moment. Will the light come on for McCoy, Holcomb, and Wilks? And then will the team still have the drive to play hard? |

Now we have a Total unknown that is floundering. Maybe this ship will get righted maybe not. Can not tell anything about what It "might" evolve into at this moment. Will the light come on for McCoy, Holcomb, and Wilks? And then will the team still have the drive to play hard? BA was a really good coach. He got SK a 5 year extension. He got Todd Bowles a Head Coaching job and turned Betcher into a pretty decent DC not to mention we had a very exciting team to watch that won a lot of games. |
