Hello, everyone. Welcome to the Forum’s 5th Game Day thread of 2020. Today’s Game Day thread is dedicated to the word….WINNING. I picked this genre because I think some Arizona Cardinals players don’t know or forgot what winning is and how to achieve it. Used as a noun, winning is the act of one that wins, or something won such as a prize. Used as an adjective, winning is related to success especially in competition. Synonyms include adorable, darling, endearing, precious, and winsome. Antonyms include abhorrent, abominable, detestable, loathsome, odious, and unlovable. Maybe Kliff Kingsbury will make WINNING mandatory locker room bulletin board material, like Vince Lombardi used to do at the Green Bay Packers.
The first known use of the word WINNING was in the 14th century, by red-robed spiritual dudes living in the Vatican at downtown Rome, Italy. The word ‘winning’ has been around about 600 years longer than the Arizona Cardinals. I then wondered, was winning as difficult for 14th century Cardinals as it is for 21st century NFL Cardinals? Probably YES. I will leave it to the Forum historians and academics to debate the Who’s Who of the ancient Cardinals. Clearly the won-lost records show that the ancient Cardinals knew about competing and winning at peace and war. They got the trophies.
What is there to know about the New York Jets football team? The team was founded in 1959 as the New York Titans (played 1960-1962), an original member of the American Football League (AFL), and later joined the NFL in the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The Jets name was adopted in 1963 and the franchise moved to then Shea Stadium in 1964. Today, the Jets compete in the AFC East Division. The team is headquartered in Florham Park, New Jersey and plays all home games at MetLife Stadium, shared with the New York Giants, and located 5 miles west of New York City. The team nickname is “Gang Green.”
Since 1968, the Jets have appeared in the playoffs 13 times, and in the AFC Championship Game 4 times, most recently losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010. The Jets are one of 3 teams NFL teams to win their lone Super Bowl (III) appearance, along with the New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Apart from the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions, who have never reached the Super Bowl, the Jet’s drought is the longest among current NFL franchises. *Both the Browns and Lions did win NFL championships prior to 1966. Jets’ hottest team rivalries include the other AFC East Patriots, Bills, Dolphins, and of course the despised neighborhood bullies, the Giants G-Men.
Jets team owners are Woody and Christopher Johnson. General Manager is Joe Douglas. Head Coach is Adam Gase (his HC seat is nuclear hot these days). The Jets established a team Ring of Honor in 2010. Members include notable HOF names: Joe Namath, Curtis Martin, Don Baynard, Winston Hill, Weeb Ewbank (Coach), and Kevin Mawae. Other ROH members include Joe Klecko, Larry Grantham, Freeman McNeil, Wesley Walker, Marty Lyons, Leon Hess (Owner), Matt Snell, Gerry Philbin, Al Toon, Mark Gastineau, Wayne Chrebet, and Emerson Boozer.
The Jets FO has a history of selecting players with top picks in the Draft that turned out to be major busts. Notable names include QB Richard Todd (1976) – he threw more career INTs than TDs, RB Blair Thomas (1990), TE Kyle Brady (1995), Dewayne Robertson (2003), DL Vernon Gholston (2008), and CB Dee Millner (2013), to name a few.
The Jets Defensive Line from 2013-2014 was one of the League’s strongest, manned by famed Muhammad Wilkerson (2011) and Sheldon Richardson (2013). The Jets hit on the Draft again in 2017, selecting S Jamal Adams with the 6th pick. He made the Pro Bowl in 2018 and earned Defensive MVP. However, Adams walked away from the Jets and now plays for Seattle Seahawks.
Jets injuries as of October 9th: Rookie LT Mekhi Becton (shoulder) is expected to miss his 1st game. Look for George Fant or Chuma Edoga to replace him. WR Breshad Perriman (ankle) is expected to miss his 3rd straight game. QB Sam Darnold still out with a sore shoulder. WR’s Jones and Thomas are questionable. RB Le’Veon Bell (sore hamstring) could come off IR. LB Jordan Jenkins is battling a sore shoulder and calf issue. Limited are CB Bless Austin (calf), S Ashtyn Davis (groin), WR Chris Hogan (ribs and knee), and John Franklin-Myers (foot). RB Frank Gore was listed on the injury report – his absence is not football related. The team, coaches, and FO staff all tested negative for COVID on October 9th.
What is there to know about team records in 2020? The Jets are playing their 3rd home game on Sunday. The team’s record in 2020 is 0 wins, 4 losses. The Jets offense is really struggling, scoring an AFC worst 65 points thru 4 games. The Defense also is struggling, giving up an AFC worst 131 points. QB Joe Flacco will start in place of injured QB Sam Arnold. Every team statistic says the Cardinals have a significant Edge over the Jets at this game. Wow, just like at the Lions and Panthers games!
Since 1971, the two teams have played just 9 games. That is a remarkable statistic, in my view, given that 49 years of NFL football have been played since 1971. The Jets lead the series, 6-3. In the 9 games, the Cardinals scored 164 points while the Jets scored 161 points. The most and fewest points scored by the Cardinals: 37 (1975) and 3 (2004). The most and fewest points scored by the Jets: 56 (2008) and 3 (2016). There were no shutouts, no OTs, and no ties. The highest scoring game was on September 28, 2008, played at Giants Stadium, NY, in front of 78,222 packed-in and crazied “Gang Green” fans. The Cardinals scored 35 while the Jets scored 56, for a combined 91 points. Kurt Warner went 40 for 57 for 472 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT. Brett Favre went 24 for 34 for 289 yards, 6 TD, 1 INT. NOTE: THE CARDINALS HAVE NEVER BEATEN THE NEW YORK JETS IN NEW YORK STATE.
The two teams last played on October 17, 2016, a Monday Night Football game, with the Cardinals winning that contest, 28-3, at Arizona. Cardinals QB Carson Palmer went 24 for 35 for 213 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT, while Jets QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick (16 for 31) and Geno Smith (4 for 6) both struggled against a superior Cardinals defense (the D allowed just 2 of 13 3rd down conversions) and accumulated 205 passing yards. David Johnson ran for 111 yards and 3 TDs, his longest a 58yd run for a TD in the 1st quarter. Soon-to-be-DUI WR Michael Floyd pulled in a 9yd pass for a TD in the 4th quarter. Cardinals QB Drew Stanton went 1 for 1 for 12 yards.
What I expect on Sunday. #1, the two teams will struggle to execute plays on Offense and Defense. The Cardinals Offense is led by the League’s most unpredictable QB in Kyler Murray. However, lately Kyler cannot throw the football through an open barn door. His reads, footwork, and accuracy are horrible, leading to overthrows, underthrows, INTs, and missed wide open WRs. His QBR is disappearing faster than an Arctic warm front. The OL has returned to its 2019 form, allowing 4-man Defenses to rush and flush Kyler from 2-second pockets. The OL cannot dominate the DLs, causing RBs to hesitate and not move forward at full speed. The Defense suddenly cannot stop 3rd down plays and is getting robbed in the Red Zone. Last week versus the Panthers, the Defense could not tackle anyone or anything anywhere all day. Patrick Peterson got the team’s first INT of the year—yea! Remember, this is the same PP21 that was credited with breaking up a potential game winning Garapollo pass in the 49ers’ end zone at the last minute of game 1—yea! The Garapollo 3rd down pass hit the back of PP21’s helmet, not his hands—oh my! PP21 is in his final contract year.
On the Cardinals bright side, if the Cardinals score 20 or more points on Sunday, that will be only the 5th time in franchise history the teams scored 20 or more points in the first five games, and the first time since 2015. Also, if DeAndre “Nuk” Hopkins gets 9 catches on Sunday, he will have 48 catches and break the NFL’s 5-game record of 47 held by 2 WRs, T.J. Houshmandzadeh (2007) and Adam Thielen (2018). BTW, “Nuk” has 8,999 career yards receiving now. When he has 9,000 yards, he will become the 4th youngest WR to get 9,000 yards, joining WR greats Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, and teammate Larry Fitzgerald.
For the Jets, the stats are much worse. Injuries are a major contributor to the Jets woes. The Offense converts just 35.7% of third downs, 5th worst in the NFL. If Bell returns as expected, he will help the run game a lot, now at 4.1 yards per rush. The Jets have the fewest yards per play and lowest passing yards in the NFL. The Offense also reached the Red Zone just 2.2 times per game, tied for fewest in the League. The Jets Defense is allowing the second-most points per game in the NFL, a shocking 32.8 per game through 4 games.
Cardinals injuries are less troublesome with DE Phillips, S Banjo, and TE Daniels listed as questionable on October 9th. LB Kennard is still out. Team’s Actives/Inactives will be announced on Sunday morning.
Game kickoff is at 1:00pm, EDT. Watch on FOX and NFL’s Red Zone. Listen to local AZ radio and mobile devices at Sirrus FM. The game is not broadcast nationally. The MetLife stadium will be empty (the Jets and Giants are unable to host fans because of an executive order by Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey limiting outdoor gatherings to 500 people), and so there will be no home field crowd advantage. Expect piped-in crowd noise to enhance the fan’s game experience. Per ESPN, the Cardinals (2-2, 1-1 away) have a 56.7% chance of winning while the Jets (0-4, 0-2 home) have a 42.9% chance of winning. Chance of a tie game is set at 3%. Check Las Vegas books for o/u, points, etc. Last check, some books were giving -7 to the Cardinals. I think that’s high.
Interesting side story. The New York Jets do not have a mascot. “Fireman Ed” (Anzalone) was the unofficial mascot for many seasons, but he finally quit the NYFD persona in 2012. Arguments, harassment, and physical threats from unruly Jets fans at game after game, many who assumed that Ed was a Jets employee, caused him to give up the increasingly dangerous gig. The last straw for Ed was at a Thursday Night Football (TNF) game on Thanksgiving Day, 2012. The New England Patriots were blowing out the Jets, 49-19. The Jets fans’ nastiness had become too personal and Ed stripped down and walked out of the Stadium before the end of the game. Ed’s treatment was not as bad as the angry Philadelphia Eagles (2-12 season record) fans booing and throwing snowballs at Santa (Frank Olivo) in 1968, but very close. Frothy fermented beverages served to frustrated fans causes fearsome behaviors at NFC East games.
Game Day weather at MetLife Stadium on Sunday will be nearly perfect at the 1pm kickoff. Expect a high temperature of 68F, partly sunny skies with cloud cover at 50%, and light winds at 9-10 mph. Chance of rain is 14%. The stadium turf is artificial.
The MetLife turf has gained the NFL’s and NFLPA’s attention in early 2020. Numerous home and visiting teams players were badly injured at several Giants and Jets home games. The NFL and teams have examined the MetLife Stadium artificial turf and have found nothing wrong. Teams recertified the field prior to games. Some players report their feet ‘gets stuck in the ground’. Per NFL injury data collected from 2012-2018, players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf. Foot and ankle injuries account for 69% of those injuries; knees, 32%.
Adrian Hill will be the NFL Referee (White Hat) for the game. He is a 2nd year NFL Referee, working games since 2010. When not performing NFL Zebra duties, Adrian works at NASA as a flight engineer (aka real rocket scientist) at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, MD – I kid you not.
Let’s all have a fun and entertaining game at New Jersey on Sunday. This is the 2nd of 3 consecutive road games for the Cardinals (Cardinals @ Cowboys a week from Monday—yea!). No major injuries to any players. The NFL and players may highlight current events at the start of the game. Otherwise, it’s GAME ON! Go Cardinals! Win #3.
