For the first time in years, I put my laptop down and just watched and hollered at the game on TV yesterday. That win was enjoyable. That was only the 3rd ARI win in 13 tries v. WAS.
Three quick comments:
Coaches: The two teams have the coaching staffs about right. I didn't see any boneheaded decisions. It takes guts to go for it on 4th downs and to make the right playcalls, especially on your own 25yd line! The one HC blemish -- Rivera saving his timeouts in the 4th quarter. He didn't give his team much of a chance during the 2-minute drill. Credit Kingsbury for keeping the chains moving and sealing off WAS' hopes.
Refs: I thought the crew did a good job. No questionable calls. Players knew when they were wrong too. Fans saw it all too due to superior video quality and replay angles. The two reviews (turnover on a WAS punt; touchback on a ARI punt) confirmed the refs had good eyes and were making the right calls.
Broadcast booth: I listened to Fox Sports, with Dick Stockton and Brady Quinn making the color commentary. I thought they were informative and fair all day. Both teams efforts were respected.

Just think what the score would have been without all those penalties. That must get corrected ASAP.

Here is the NFL's WAS v. ARI Gamebook 2020 09 20. The file is 18 pages of game information. Great for post-game analysis. I drop a copy at the Analytics thread too. WAS v ARI Gamebook 2020 09 20.pdf (134.26 KB)

I am encouraged that the Cards have beaten the defending NFC champions and the Redskins even though KM is still getting some rust off in the passing game and overcoming way too many penalties including ones that negate TD's. I am also encouraged by the development of the 2nd yr players like Isabella - Zach Allen - Gailliard .. and I hope Jalen Thompson comes back strong in a few weeks. I would ask for KK to review his play calling and do the following: - NO WR screens to tall WR's unless you are planning to only needing 3-4 yds ... this is my equivalent to throwing back of end zone passes to short receivers inside the Red Zone.
- NO tall receiver sweeps (e.g. Hopkins) INSIDE YOUR OWN 20 Yd Line !! ... sweeps should be run between the 30's and with small shifty players.
- NO going for a 1st down on 4th down INSIDE YOUR OWN 30 yd line .... ESPECIALLY with a 20-0 lead !!! Holy Smokes !!
- DEVELOP THE SCREEN GAME TO THE RB's ... PLEASE !!! What 2 coaches run screens to RB's more than any coaches in the NFL -- Andy Reid and Bill Belechik.
- KK -- more plays like in the last drive where KM faked a pitchout to Drake causing the LB to move forward and then hitting Dan Arnold down the seam who was wide open 10 yds past the aforementioned LB.
- LIONS are horrible vs. the run so let's begin both halves of the next game running the inside zone to Drake/Edmonds which will setup play action deep shots to Kirk and Isabella later in the same half.

Going for it on that 4th down accomplished little except showing the NFL one of our trick plays. Save those for when we truly need them.

On offense, similar to last week. Get the ball out quick. Keep the pace up. Tire that front seven out. Kyler make them chase you when they give you opportunities. Those big guys will be huffing and puffing by Q3. On defense, go after that QB. His Oline is weak. Let go Cardinals...2-0! PHI attacked the WAS offense left side successfully. Rivera and Haskins knows the offense has a problem on that side. Also, offense has average RBs, pocket type QB, and decent WRs. There will be scoring, just not a lot of it from WAS. I want to see Simmons show the team that he learned something at SF last weekend. If he combines discipline and instinct with all that physical skill, then we got the 1st rounder we expect. Overall, I expect Vance's D to control WAS offense and not let the game get out of hand. Arizona 30 pts w/ two TO takeaways. Washington 15 pts w/ no TO takeaways. Hey, how about that forecast a few hours before kickoff. Score is spot on. Missed the KM TO. My wife said I'm bad. She's right.
