Hello, everyone. Welcome to the Forum’s 2nd Game Day thread of 2020. Today’s Game Day thread is dedicated to Mr. Larry Wilson, #8, Safety, a long-time Cardinals favorite since the Saint Louis hometown era and a forever NFL legend that at 82yo passed away this week, and also dedicated to the 117 “Ghost” Forum members that signed up but have yet to post at least one time. RIP Larry Wilson. I know there are no ghosts members, just passionate fans that are looking for the right words and right timing for their first post. Cardinals fans are passionate fans. And passionate fans always have something to share. Come on, ghosts! Just do it!
Last weekend, the Arizona Cardinals opened the 2020 season on the road at the San Francisco 49ers on September 13, 2020. Few NFL fans thought Cardinals had a chance to beat the 2019 defending NFC champion 49ers. But the Cardinals shocking season-opening win, 24-20, did happen and the Big Red team record is now 1-0. Arizona didn’t win the Super Bowl last weekend but it sure felt that way to Cardinals fans. Go Cardinals!
On Sunday, September 20 at 405pm EDT, the Cardinals play their 2020 home-opener and take on the former Redskins team, now called the Washington Football Team (WFT)— pending owner Dan Snyder’s selection of a socially permissive new team nickname—I previously proposed “American Albatrosses”, "Washington Wood Ducks”, “Potomac Porcupines”, etc.
This next game will be the 125th played between the two teams, both NFL charter member franchises. The WFT and the Cardinals, going back to 1932 when the teams were called the Chicago Cardinals and the Boston Braves, have played 124 games, with the Braves/Redskins/WFT leading the series 76 wins v. the Cardinals 46 wins. The teams finished games in a tie only 2 times. The two teams have played 4 OT games, with the Cardinals winning 3 of 4. Their last OT game was in 1997. The two teams have played 12 games since 2000, with the Redskins winning 10 of 12 games.
The two teams last played in 2018, with Washington winning an easy one, 24-6, at Arizona’s then named UofP Stadium. Former Cardinals QB Sam Bradford (QBR 57.6, 20 for 34 passing) and Alex Smith (QBR 118.1, 21 for 30 passing) dueled that day. The inept Cardinals defense gave up 21 points in the 2nd quarter, and the offense was equally embarrassing, being shutout thru the first 3 quarters. All Pro RB David Johnson finally ran 2 yards for a TD at 9 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. New HC Steve Wilks then called for a 2-point conversion, which Sam Bradford quickly failed to execute—cementing his demotion to backup QB two games later.
Last weekend, the WFT erased a 17-point deficit to win by 10 while watching their elite defensive line absolutely dominate the Philadelphia Eagles front line, sack QB Wentz 8 times, and take over the game and easily win 27-17. Last year’s #2 pick Chase Young was a monster, recording 1.5 sacks and 2 QB hits. Ripping off 27 unanswered points on offense also got everyone’s attention. QB Dwayne Haskins played decent football, completing 17 of 31 passes for 178 yards and no interceptions. If there is an offensive shortfall, it’s the lack of a WFT running game. RB Peyton Barber had more touchdowns (2) than average yards per carry (<2.0). At 1-0, the WFT is looking to keep their win streak going v. the Cardinals on Sunday. The WFT will not be caught flat-footed and surprised like the 49ers, now having the game day of film on Murray’s and Hopkin’s hotrod behaviors. The WFT knows the Cardinals will be a much bigger challenge than the Eagles. The WFT will be ready for 2nd-year HC Kliff Kingsbury’s revamped offense and defense.
As of 18 September, the sports book’s betting line is the Cardinals earn a win and give -7.0, up from -6.5 points in 24 hours. WFT is 4-0 against the spread in its last four games. The Cardinals are 3-1 against the spread in its last four games. Hmmm? Knocking off the 49ers is no reason for Cardinals fans to get all liquored up for game 2 of the season. I’d be very careful betting the house mortgage on this next game, either way. I have a lot of trouble with -6.5 points. There is no home field advantage without noisy fans and the season is still too young to make fantasy assumptions.
WFT Analytics Game 1: Already in 2020, the WFT scoring (27 points v. PHI last week) is about twice the 2019 average per game. Other Game 1 facts of interest: QB Haskins QBR Game 1, 48.3; Haskins passing 17/31/178yds, 1 TD, 3 sacks. RB Barber rush 17/29yds, RB Gibson rush 9/36yds, QB Haskins rush 7/17yds. WR McLaurin 5/61yds, WR Sims 3/50yds, TE Thomas 4/37yds. 3rd down efficiency 5/18. 4th down efficiency 1/2. Total offensive 258yds. Punting avg 45yds. Penalties 7/55yds. PutMeIn assessment: Haskins is a solid and accurate big QB, taking what the defensive gives, avoiding judgment errors, and can run out of the backfield. Running game is a weakness, putting pressure on the receivers to make yards. Receivers are blue collar, lunch-pail type guys, nothing to shout about, but effective in space. Defense is stellar at most positions; CBs will certainly be tested on Sunday by Nuc. Coaching is top-notch.
