Greetings, Birdgang and Cardinals Nation, and the First NFL Gameday of the 2018 NFL Season is finally here! Our 2018 Cardinals franchise officially beginn their 99th regular season in the National Football League, 31st year in the State Of Arizona, 25th season as The Arizona Cardinals, Cardinals also begin their 13th season in the renamed and rebranded State Farm (Insurance) Stadium.
Today is the first regular season game for Head Coach Steve Wilks, at this time last season was the Defensive Coordinator for the Carolina Panthers and Head Coach Ron Rivera.
Many developments and changes have come to this day and game. Just seven months ago, the day after the 2017 NFL Regular Season ended, after the start of the 2018 calendar year and following Super Bowl LII, the Cardinals did not have a Head Coach after Bruce Arians retired, and into last Spring last seasons coaching staff and veterans were released and headed elsewhere around the league.
Cardinals Team President Michael Bidwill and General Manager Steve Keim interviewed coaching candidates both by visiting them in person through plane trips , while other candidates visited the Cardinals facility themselves, for initial and second interviews. Both men decided Steve Wilks sold them in the second interview to be, and now the next Cardinals Head Coach replacing Arians.
Cardinals then signed free agents when the NFL Calendar Year started in March, among the players Michael Bidwill and Steve Keim recruited and signed included Sam Bradford, Mike Glennon, Zach Moore, Corey Peters, Olson Pierre, Justin Pugh, Andre Smith, and Brandon Williams.
Then the Cardinals drafted six players from the recent 2018 NFL Draft. Mason Cole, Corey Cunningham, Chase Edmunds, Christian Kirk, and Cardinals top pick and #10 selection Josh Rosen made the 53-man roster. Only Chris Campbell didn't make the final cut.
Two Organized Team Activities in May and June, the 90-man Team Training Camp inside and outside in July and August at then-named University Of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, and four preseason games and final mandatory cuts to the NFL Mandated 53-man regular season roster, followed by the 10-man practice squad the next day with still tweaked personnel changes, the 2018 Arizona Cardinals are ready for the next 16 games beginning their home battle with the visiting Washington Redskins.
Cardinals will try to avenge their earlier loss to the Redskins almost nine months ago in both teams last meeting. Cardinals offense could not advance down the field, and the Redskins contained the Cardinals with their tight defense, and contained RB Adrian Peterson. Phil Dawson instead did all the game scoring with his five field goals from 35, 19, 34, and 32 yards, as Washington defeated Arizona 20-15 at FedEx Field back on December 17, 2017.
Cardinals will see an old acquaintance as Peterson will start ar running back for Washington. Peterson eventually signed with the Redskins prior to their third preseason game with the Denver Broncos, so the Cardinals will see their former teammate on the opposing team. Also the Redskins acquired 14-year NFL veteran QB Alex Smith from the K.C. Chiefs, replacing Kirk Cousins, who went on to Minnesota.
Arizona will also try to prevent Washington to win their regular season opener for the sixth straight year. Redskins have not won a Week One game since defeating the Saints 40-32 to start the 2012 regular season. Mike Shanahan was their coach at the time until Jay Gruden took over prior to the Redskins 2014 NFL season
Cardinals defeated the Redskins in their last two regular season games since the Cardinals played their home games in Glendale. Arizona defeated Washington 30-20 back on October 12, 2014.
Cardinals also won their most recent home meeting over the Redskins, when Carson Palmer threw the 42-yard winning pass play to J.J. Nelson, with 1:56 remaining in the fourth quarter, to make the final score of 31-23, back on December 4, 2016.
Washington though leads Arizona in the All-time regular season series after 123 games with 75 wins, 46 losses, 1 tie (17-17, 1962), and four overtimes (3-1), the rivalry started when both teams descendents, the Chicago Cardinals shut out the Boston Braves, 9-0, in the very first game played between the teams at Fenway Park back on October 16, 1932.
Cincinnati Reds TV and radio broadcaster Marty Brennaman and former NFL linebacker Chris Spielman are announcing the live TV game commentary along with sideline reporter and interviewer Shannon Spake, for The NFL On FOX'S late regional doubleheader game, seen and limited in the Washington D.C. area, Virginia, Maryland, parts of Delaware and West Virginia, and all of Arizona including KMSB Fox 11 in Tucson, KECY Fox 9 in Yuma and Imperial Valley, CAL, and locally on KSAZ My Fox Phoenix Channel 10, all stations seen live on HD.
Dave Pasch and Ron Wolfley also are announcing the live radio game play-by-play and analysis, along with sideline reporter and interviewer Paul Calvisi, on flagship station KMVP Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, and the Arizona Cardinals Radio Network.
State Farm Stadium's roof will still be closed, because outside in the stadium area including The Great Lawn, sunny and clear skies at 101 degrees, feels like 102 degrees is the gamecast for the 1:25 PM, Mountain and Pacific Standard Time kickoff, along with 0% precipitation, 24% humidity, and west/southwest winds at 7 miles per hour.
Head Linesman Walt Coleman leads his officiating crew assigned by the NFL offices in New York City, to supervise the live game action between the Cardinals and Redskins.
American Idol winner and local singer Jordin Sparks will also sing The National Anthem.
As in Mad Jacks banner hanging in the northeast rafters, this afternoon is a 'Red Dawn' era commencing with Steve Wilks first regular season game as our Head Coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
NO injuries to all the players as the Cardinals and Redskins play on the field, Protect Your Nest, Rise Up Red Sea, in your 127th consecutive sellout in the first home game at the renamed State Farm Stadium, and and LET'S GO CARDINALS!!!!
