I never liked the McCoy hire because in reality he's never been a very good OC. His resume simply isn't that impressive at all for how long he's been around. So this isn't surprising.
The only thing I like about him is he provides experience for a young coaching staff. Given that Wilks and Holcomb are new to their roles, it made sense to not go with a rookie OC as well.

JJ can get separation. Throwing passes 8 yards and in to JJ is not exactly playing to his strength. In fairness to JJ throwing to him in traffic near the LOS is flat out nuts. We averaged 5.23 yards per completion last night. Per attempt we were 13 for 24 for 68 yards. Yes that's right under 3 yards per pass attempt. JJ is a guy to get one on one and get him down the field. You can't expect JJ to be effective in the wash of Linebackers, DE and safeties. Nobody is going to give him room on a WR screen until we actually throw the ball down the field. I suspect we will in the real season once teams start to stack up the short routes. I disagree. He's blanketed by the defenders whenever he tries to get downfield as they are onto his one and only trick. In the few passes thrown deep to him, admittedly some were under thrown, he gets man handled by the defender every single time. He did draw a DPI penalty but the reality is if he was able to use his body, he should have come down with that ball but he is so slight, the defenders just push him out of the way...effortlessly. NFL teams typically carry 6 to 7 WR's. JJ Nelson is perfect to play that role. This guy has over 500 yards the last two years. He doesn't start, he makes big plays and scores TD's. In comparison to what we have beyond the 2 spot he's fine. He's not a possession WR who is going to start. I don't believe we are going to be averaging 3 yards per pass attempt in the regular season. We are going to want to go down field and use 4 WR sets at times. It's not going to be Arians bombs away but I highly doubt the plan is to average 6 yards per pass. I agree he isn't that good but you have to look at what we have and what his role is.

JJ is toast. Can't catch. Can't get separation. Can't come down with contested balls and can't break a tackle for YAC to save his life. He got ragdolled by the CB on the little speed screen and it was embarrassing. Can't wait for Gresham to get back and think that RSJ will be fine once the season starts. JJ can get separation. McCoy is going to be Wilks’ downfall. Keim will need to fire him sooner rather than later.
Still too early to make that assumption, IMO. Remember, he said he was going to adapt plays to player ability, and the preseason has another game to go.
We aren't seeing everything in the playbook. I think he's keeping it simple so the evaluations will be fair and easier to do before cutting down to 53. I like that he finally produced successful screen plays. We have not seen that for a looooong time... and after proving they can work, he has not shown them much since.
Yeah, we all miss the long bombs, but who can catch them? I don't see anyone reliable yet.

That's the trick of the entire NFL. Tape and adjustments. If we don't make teams respect the deep ball the screens are going to be blown up. Sam loves the short game but that's also been his downfall. He has an absurdly low TD rate to pass attempts on any historic basis. You need to create big plays to score in the NFL and open up space underneath. It's very tough to drive the field on 15 play drives over and over without something bad happening. Bend don't break D's very often look ineffective statistically in yards given up but they are often top 10 in points allowed. Sam can throw a nice deep ball, historically, he doesn't do it nearly enough. It's up to McCoy to make him do it or he will hamper the O. It's preseason so I don't put much stock into anything were doing. If I did, I would be very nervous about McCoy. I think we need to see several regular season games to see how we attack, how teams adjust and how we adjust. The early part of the NFL season is very much like a boxing match. Teams are feeling each other out. So far it looks like we are in love with running the ball and coupling it with a very short passing game. I suspect D's are going to stop that very soon and force an adjustment. On the other hand if we keep getting 4 plus turnovers a game it really doesn't matter what the O does.

In other news, DJ Fosters season is done. He was a meniscus tear away from having the knee injury trifecta with his ACL and MCL tears. Looks like his career might be over. preseason.

I was listening to nfl on serious/xm they had a 15 minute discussion re: preseason and starters. Both hosts agreed that with the size of contracts being so high, they believe the play of starters in preseason is over. They suggested that next season most teams will not play any starters in preseason. The days of preseason games is coming to an end.. jmho

Play your starters a little bit in game one and then let your backups and reserves play for the remaining 7 quarters.

The business side of football is changing, the new leagues will have contracts that will have a (finders fee?) provisions when guys move up to the nfl. My question is, how long have the owners been (advising) the new leagues. THEY have a PLAN.. ?

Defense and running the football will be key this season to allow the quick passing game, good ST.

If the short passing game is all we see, I vote Rosen get a chance sooner vs later. Let the kid wing it downfield a bit.
Bradford has to get the ball out quickly to protect himself, Captain checkdown.
Time will tell.

Time will tell. Use the run and short passing game to keep our QBs upright, control time of possession and give our Oline time to gel. Then expand the playbook. It makes all the sense in the world. We need a top 15 Oline to then ease Rosen in, and Bradford getting killed won’t help.

If they sputter keep the Defense on the field, not so sure I will like it. They have to be able to run the ball, those opposing defense will force you to stretch the field soon enough. There has to be the threat of the 25-30 yd downfield routes, just to keep them honest. The TE down the middle may be our best deep threat. I can't wait to see how in unfolds, I know David Johnson could make this team special no matter who is behind center.

This article helped me understand Bradford’s game for good and bad: www.1500espn.com/vikings-2/2017/05/qb-analysis-finds-bradford-leagues-accurate-passer-2016-mean/He’s incredibly accurate...was the top NFL QB in accuracy for both long and short passes in 2016. Low INTs. But some of this is because he is incredibly careful, sometimes to his detriment. Even when playing from behind, he will not change his game up and take risks throwing long. He suffered in Minn due to a lack of running game an an NFL worst Oline. The hope here is the Oline can be good enough to hold for the short and intermediate stuff and the run game with DJ will be better than what Minn offered him. Works in theory. We shall see... Regardless, I think it’s smart to begin our season with this type of playbook. I don’t want Sam or Josh sitting back in the pocket for long until I’m confident we have a strong Oline.

DJ left everything on the field on Sunday night while pursuing his dream. It is known that he was playing with an extremely fragile knee and we should not be surprised that he re-injured that wheel. The h ow and why he got hurt again is mostly irrelevant. The game is brutal. I wish DJ the best of good fortune if his pro football career is done. The good news: DJ is a young man and his whole life is ahead of him.
