It doesnt matter if its backups or starters, both units play to the coaching philosophies, so while you may get better performance out of the starters, you can still see what this team preaches in its backups.
With that said. Concrete trends through 3 games:
1. Takeaways. This D is going to get alot of takeaways this year, which is exciting. Playing zone, it means DBs are facing the QB at all times. Expect the INT numbers to go way up. Love it.
2. Zzz offense. Even by conservative standards, this is a conservative offense. Run up the middle. Horizontal passing. Screens. Nothing over 15 yards ever. Painful almost. Captain check down. Need 5 yards so throw it 4. We can win games with it, but O is going to be boring.
3. Non-contributing #3+ WRs. Get ready for another year of David+Larry being 90%+ of the offense. I am especially disappointed in Kirk. Hes absolutely not living up to the hype. Littles return to the NFL was brief. Dude drops too many. JJ will be cut. Brice Butler has been a ghost. Chad will be Chad. Nuff said.
4. Much improved special teams. Not saying much considering we were dead last for so long under Amos, any improvement is big improvement, but we definitely see big improvement.
5. Much improved OL. A bit cheating here, of course our OL will be improved because the entire thing was on IR last year. But our OL looks good. Hump got beat by Gregory, thats fine. Noone ever said Hump is Joe Thomas. Smith will most definitely give up sacks at RT. But as a whole, I like the unit. Props to Mason Cole at Center. Kid has done a great job.
6. Improved depth. Hopefully we dont have to suffer another year of "next man up" headlines, but if we do, I like our backups. Obv we have Rosen as QB2. We have Edmonds as RB 2. We have reasonably good DE2's with Capi and Dora. Hodges and Gardeck have looked good as the backup LBs. Love Benwerke and Boston as our DB3 and DB4. The one exception is the OL. We cant afford to lose anyone on the OL.

you didn't mention penalties. far too many. it was like a game 1 preseason. seems wilks is skipping the basics. I am starting to get buddy ryan flashbacks.

I agree with everything there.
Not too many surprises. Defense should be solid. Offense will be pretty uneventful, but could slowly get the job done.
We really need at least ONE of Kirk, Williams or Seals-Jones to contribute this season. The fact that all 3 have looked pretty pedestrian is a bit disappointing. It's still early, but cmon, asking for one young guy to step up shouldn't be asking too much.
Overall though, as much as people complain about some of our backups, they are apparently a lot better than some other teams' backups. In watching Dallas and New Orleans, some of their guys looked like a giant bowl of yikes.

remember we haven't seen dj and Edmonds on field together...also larry didn't play many snaps-with those guys on the field it SHOULD open up opportunities for kirk, seal-jones and chad...whether they catch the ball will be key.

Agree with everything except for the offense being really boring.... I don't mind grinding out yards and first downs for most of the time and playing the field position game. I expect a few big plays from David Johnson and Fitz per game... I also dont think Wilks showed much of what we can do on offense yet and if Bradford is healthy I have seen that he is deadly accurate which is a big change from what we've had to watch most of the time in the past. Even Palmer had a few "wtf" throws per game. Almost all of Bradford's passes were well placed but unfortunately our receivers couldn't make the catch or the defense made a nice play
And if Bradford goes down I will enjoy watching our future QB getting some playing time(I hope I enjoy it at least lol).

We have a punter who allows us to play a field position game. We better hope that Dawson is deadly accurate from 40 yards out. It looks like Baker is the real deal. Reddick has a lot of work to do to be an ever down LB.

Dink and Dunk offense is the plan, for sure.. it’s all about the running game, screen passing and yards after catch.. it will be interesting to watch. Defensively I’m optimistic, but they still need to play the game. Special Teams will be the biggest improvement this season. Lee is a weapon, I think he will get lots of opportunities to shine.. unfortunately!

I was seriously impressed with Bradfords accuracy when he was in. Too many WR drops and Bradford was putting them on the money. Defense is flat out good. Patrick Peterson is gonna kill it in zone coverage

McCoy is going to be Wilks’ downfall. Keim will need to fire him sooner rather than later.

The biggest trend I see is when NFL 1's play against 2's or 3's with little scheming and nothing on the line, it's a gross mismatch.

He got ragdolled by the CB on the little speed screen and it was embarrassing. Can't wait for Gresham to get back and think that RSJ will be fine once the season starts.

McCoy is going to be Wilks’ downfall. Keim will need to fire him sooner rather than later. Normally, the GM stays out of the hiring/firing of coordinators and coaches (except head coach, of course). If anybody fires McCoy, it will have to be Wilks; however, it is a little early to "throw dirt" on the offense. Wait until we play a couple of regular season games and see. It never ceases to amaze me how individuals try to evaluate a team during pre season when the real focus is on players and coaches don't look at overall team strategy, but want to see how individual players react within the environment.

Throwing passes 8 yards and in to JJ is not exactly playing to his strength. In fairness to JJ throwing to him in traffic near the LOS is flat out nuts. We averaged 5.23 yards per completion last night. Per attempt we were 13 for 24 for 68 yards. Yes that's right under 3 yards per pass attempt. JJ is a guy to get one on one and get him down the field. You can't expect JJ to be effective in the wash of Linebackers, DE and safeties. Nobody is going to give him room on a WR screen until we actually throw the ball down the field. I suspect we will in the real season once teams start to stack up the short routes.

He’s garbage & has been garbage since Peyton isn’t by his side anymore.

He's blanketed by the defenders whenever he tries to get downfield as they are onto his one and only trick. In the few passes thrown deep to him, admittedly some were under thrown, he gets man handled by the defender every single time. He did draw a DPI penalty but the reality is if he was able to use his body, he should have come down with that ball but he is so slight, the defenders just push him out of the way...effortlessly.
