From the official site:
“Wilks is a defensive-minded coach, so it’s not a surprise that he plans to defer when winning the coin toss this season, which would put his defense on the field to open a game. “Try to set the tone,” Wilks said.
Wilks also likes to defer because it gives the Cardinals a chance to get consecutive possessions at the end of the second quarter and the beginning of the third. It is a departure from former coach Bruce Arians’ philosophy, as he preferred to receive the opening kick.”
One of my pet peeves with Arians has been attended to!

One of my pet peeves is deferring when you win the toss in overtime. It really bums me out If the other team knows you want to set the tone by deferring and they win the coin toss, should they make you receive to bum you out? If they like to receive to set the tone for them is it better for them to let you receive to bum you out? If you loss the coin toss and have to receive did the other team set the tone or are you just bummed out? If you win the toss and defer and the other team wanted to receive did they do a jedi mind trick on you to bum you out? If you randomly defer or receive and you have a 50/50 shot to win the toss did you lose the tone before the game starts or are you just bummed out? Do you do one or the other because the team captain can't be trusted to have a choice if he actually wins the toss because he might make the wrong choice and bum you out? I'm very confused why a 50/50 chance on a coin toss makes a difference? Thinking about it bums me out.

I think it should go game to game. Depending on the opponent and how your team is playing. If they have a poor D and your team is hitting on O then take the ball first, and try and get points. If your O is having trouble getting going right off the bat then give them the ball first. Most coaches script the first 15 or so plays. They want to see how your D reacts and what works and doesn't work for them. I don't think it should be set in stone one way or the other.

Thank goodness - I love this !!!
The decision to be on defense at home for the 1st series of the game is the right decision because: - Home Crowd is Electric at start of the game -- optimum noise at beginning of the game making it harder for opposing offenses to operate.
- Shows confidence in game planning of the defense that the coaches preparation is ready for what the opposing offense will be trying to do to start the game.
- Wilks comment about getting back-to-back possessions at end of 1st half and the ability to come back with starting the first drive of the 2nd half is a potential momentum swing.
- Confidence in McCoy to make adjustments at halftime and be able to score on 1st drive of the 2nd half -- very important.
- Contrary to Point #1 above -- the stadium is only about 70% full at start of 2nd half due to long lines at concession stands/restrooms during halftime. Always disappointed me when watching the BA Cardinals was how the defense came on the field at start of 2nd half wanting more noise to make it more difficult for the opposing offense; however the crowd is not 100% back in their seats until about the 10 minute mark of the 3rd qtr.
The importance in a football game of the first possession of the 2nd half cannot be minimized. A home game wherein the offense drives right down the field in 2nd half not only jacks up the crowd for the 2nd half but also shows the other team that adjustments have been made at the visiting team now must counter or momentum is going to swarm them like a tidal wave (or maybe a Red Sea!!!)

Why exactly is the second half possession more important than the first half possession? What guarantees a team the last possession in the first half and the first possession in the second half. What happens when the opponent scores to end the first half and you go 3 and out to start the second half? Most games in the NFL are 1 score games. Possessions, plays, TOP, field position, red zone scoring and turnovers are what win games. The coin toss guarantees each team 1 possession. It's completely irrelevant over the course of a season.

Arians started deferring in the second half of last year not that it really mattered. The whole thing is overblown honestly

We'll see how the season goes and see if Wilks makes better adjustments than BA. Only time will tell.

Almost all football coaches at every level want the ball first on offense at the beginning of the second half simply because by then HALF THE GAME IS KNOWN. The offense controls the tempo. You know if you have a lead and want to kill clock. You know what is working or not working on offense. You know if you’re way down and have to play catch up ball. So many reasons. The only reason BA ever gave to always take the ball first was ego driven. We have confidence in ourselves to set the tone. And more often than not we didn’t do anything to open a game.
