1970 We played the K.C. Chiefs in an interconference game. The result was a 6-6 tie. I think this was a game I remember watching on National TV. Bitter Cold weather. We should have won the game
if we had Charley Winner probably would have coached the team longer.

Lots of thoughts about that matchup in 1970.
Being a Big Red fan growing in Mid Missouri, the success the Chiefs enjoyed in the AFL became local favorites as the TV exposure grew in our area. The merger of AFL/NFL was a big deal, got to see how our Cards matched up against the mighty Chiefs from the AFL.
A tie game was a victory for the Cards considering where each franchise was at the time.
I always felt the KC fans were spoiled as they enjoyed a great run of winning football with Stram and Dawson. Lots of fans jumped on the KC bandwagon back in this era.
I still thank god that Don Coryell came along. LOL

Hi Smitty, The Chiefs were a powerhouse back then in the 1970's. They had such a great offensive line and and even better defensive line. They had great receivers in Otis Taylor and a good tight in in Fred Arbanas. Len Dawson was a formidable quarterback and even thier kicker Jan Stenerud was an all pro. In this link is a story about Fred Arbanas and Referee Tommy Bell This is one of the funniest stories in a football game I ever read. Read on down the quotes to where Referee Tommy Bell is mentioned. www.upi.com/Archives/1981/12/23/Best-and-Worst-Quotes-of-Year/3801377931600/

It's obvious why Arrowhead Stadium had to be built. That was a horrible stadium on the outskirts of KC, Mo. Marlboro Man football conditions for the fans.

He was one of my favorite KC players on the O.
