Coach Winner had me excited to be a Cardinal Fan. His defense was unreal. Please look at the stats to see Bill Bidwill fired him which I think was a mistake. He was turning the franchise around. His record was 35-30-5 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charley_Winner

No need to sell me on Charley Winner. He was the coach when I first started to root for the cards. I don't recall the specific year, but the Cards was doing well until QB Charley Johnson got injured. Who knows what might have happened if not for that.
You may or may not agree with me, but I really liked Bud Wilkinson. He was a legendary college coach that never got any support from Mr. Bidwill. What that was all about is unknown to me and never really reported one way or the other.
What I do know, he took a very bad team and at least made them respectable. For whatever reason, he got fired mid-second year. It wasn't until we hired Coryell that things got better.

I was surprised at the integrity of Winner's defenses in the mid sixties, usually top 10 in the league.
Wilkerson, hard to see the positive in his pro tenure. He followed Coryell.

If Mr. Bidwill would have given him the support and time needed, I think he would have been a winner.
