I have many thoughts about referees....some good some bad. The thing is referees are human.....they are going to screw up at times. I'm sure some of them may be prejudiced at times. I'm also sure most of them became a ref because they love the game. How can you be a ref and not have a favorite team. The good ones are able to put their favoritism out of mind, but let's face it, I don't care who you are, that is hard. It's going to sneak in even if you are not aware of it.
How many of you could always correctly call a pass interference or holding penalty if you were refereeing a Cards game. I couldn't. I would either overcompensate to show to all including myself that I had no favoritism or say dam.... I just want my team to win.
The point is....referring is really really hard.
There have always been bad calls, sometimes really bad calls, this year is no different.
I cuss the refs as much as anyone. But all said and done, I'm thankful they are as good as they are. They have a thankless job

I've never liked that NFL rule for a OL player verbally reporting as an eligible receiver to the Ref. Why? If the Ref does not verbally acknowledge to the player, and then "Announce" the OL player's eligibility on the stadium intercom, the HC must call a time-out and ensure the Ref gets the eligibility message.
The Ref has a lot going on between snaps. In this game with the Lions, I blame the Lions' offense, not the Ref. Note that the Ref is discussing something when QB Goff directs the OL player to report to the Ref. Then, the OL player communicates poorly to the Ref. Note how the OL players briefly engages the busy Ref. The pre-snap clock is running. Other referees and players are all talking, and the stadium noise is extreme near the end zone.
It is true that the Ref (Mr. Allen) has a history of questionable decision-making. That does not mean he made a second mistake by taking away the TD in this game.
The HC has a responsibility to ensure the Ref does his job, too.

The Lion’s got a 2:01 minute end of half TO to negate a Goff pick six…these pale in what it cost the teams over bad officiating….Lion’s and D’Niners are darlings of the NFL. I have no sympathy. Bad officiating has been present as long as I can remember and before my time…it continues.

Bad officiating has been present as long as I can remember and before my time…it continues. Thank the Almighty that we have NFL instant replay (IR) nowadays. I remember the strong pushback from the Refs leadership when IR was proposed to the owners for a vote. IR would ruin the game as we know it! All Refs hate IR of course, but they have no choice but to accept IR and their hand-eye failings. Smart teams take advantage of every nuance of the game, especially the Refs, who are part of a team's speed game. Smart teams know what incidents are not reviewable and practice the art of deception. Dumb teams don't see the opportunities to 'fool' refs into seeing things that are not real, like a roadie magician pulling a silver dollar out of my ear at a country carnival. The magician deceives. Smart players do deception with practice. We saw that happen with 1-2 plays at the ARZ v. SEA game on Nov 24th. Do some refs favor some teams? I doubt it, really, I doubt it. The smart teams do make some refs look like friends of the team. Is there bad officiating? Yes, and it has been proven again and again. The NFL works to eliminate bad crews at the end of a season. I have no first-hand knowledge of a ref being fired after a game. Rather, the individual ref is subjected to remedial training (until a passing grade is achieved).
