I love Matt as much as anybody, but he is getting old and more injury prone. He missed 4 games in 2022, and now 6 games in 2024. Before that he was almost injury free. Were his injuries flukes or a sign of old age? I did some research on kickers. There lots of articles out there but here is just two that may shed some light as to what we should do. Why are so many NFL kickers getting hurt? Specialist switches have been trending up this season
Tough decision coming for Cardinals if Matt Prater returns from IR
A quote from the above article.... "Meanwhile, Chad Ryland, who has been Prater’s replacement the last six weeks, has been fantastic, making all 13 of his extra points and 11-of-12 field goals, including three game-winners. Ryland is young, has leg strength (he has made a 57-yarder this season ) and has proven to be clutch."There are many teams struggling with their kickers right now. They would die to have a kicker like him. I don't know, but if we let him slip through our hands, we may regret it for years to come. A good kicker can win a game, and bad one can lose a game.

Tough decision. Prater has had a fantastic career…but this is the time for the organization to get younger and move on. I know you’re not “suppose” to lose your position due to injury…but it does happen. And although Prater has hit some incredible kicks…he’s also missed some very key make-able kicks both during KK’s coaching tenure and JG’s. Ryland has earned his stay IMO….even if this move cost us some long range distance. We are still building for the future…and this would be a move looking not just at this year but next year as well.

Ryland for sure and it's not even close based on age. For years the Cardinals have struggled with the position. Nail it down for a long period with the young guy, one less check box to fill.

I love greybeard K Prater, but his time has run out in the NFL. He's just one long kick away from tearing another hammy, and if we cut Ryland and he is then signed elsewhere, what shall we do? Ask the b/u Kicker on ST to carry us through the end of the season and maybe the playoffs? No way! Keep K Ryland. He's the future.

It is not close nor a tough decision. Ryland all day long. I have wanted to replace Prater for two years.

Unfortunately, it will come down to money and Father Time Here are Matt Prater's Salary cap numbers on overthe cap.com overthecap.com/player/matt-prater/32Here are Chad Ryland's salary cap numbers $915,000 base salary Cap Cost $610,000 Here is that link: overthecap.com/player/chad-ryland/10936Chad Ryland loves playing for us, He got his chance and took it to the next level. 11/12 FGS a 57 yarder no missed PATS Matt Prater is becoming a legend as was Larry Fitzgerald Call me crazy but Ryland is locked in next year and Matt Prater is a free agent. Ryland is dirt cheap. Prater may stay for less We could do a Steve Keim where he cut a player and kept Drew Butler our punter and Ryan Quigley at the same time. If Keim could keep two lousy punters We could keep two great placekickers. But that is crazy so keep the Kid He is already signed for next season Enjoy the videos Matt Prater 62 yards Chad Ryland

It is not close nor a tough decision. Ryland all day long. I have wanted to replace Prater for two years. I don't ever want to see a Cardinals kicker cost us a game again. But I know it will happen. I still hate it with every fiber in my body. Ryland gives us the best chance to win. I say, go with youth.

I like our punting game as well, both spots upgraded tremendously with zero capital spent. That's the first time in forever that I can remember the team upgraded anything for basically nothing. Great sign that the management is doing a good job, eye on ball and can recognize hidden tallent.

I love Prater too... BUT...Chad has earned the right to play this season out for this team. And maybe many more seasons ahead.
