Looks like we plan to keep him. Listen…regardless of the many different opinions on this board…when heathy…he’s played his heart and soul out…leaves it on the field…been a leader… played through injuries…and…really…has wanted to stay here…just wanted to be paid…AFTER he produced…not BEFORE…like others under Cardinal contracts in the past were paid as current players or free agents. To me…if he’s locked up…and we all live long enough…he’ll probably retire a Cardinal and be in the Ring of Honor one day…IMO.

Looks like we plan to keep him. If that is correct which I can believe, Thompson will be asked for a pretty significant pay cut as the safety position has been devalued across the league and the Cardinals can't have the safety position occupying the most cap $$ outside of the QB room.

I like it… he is the best in the box safety in the NFL…not good at covering in space medium or deep and a WR one on one with any safety usually like the match up.
He is small and aging and I still like him here.

He is a heat seeking missile and plays all out. Great locker room guy. I love how he plays. But his size limits his coverage abilities, and age will catch up. Three years max and we CANNOT continue having two safeties as top three cap hits along with Kyler.

The top 5 "MVP's" in 2024 so far with the Cards are: - KM1 - under contract as his big deal just started to "kick-in."
- JC - 2 yr extension @ approx. $10-10.5M/yr.
- Budda - sounds like a 2 - 3 yr extension
- McBride - should get a 4yr extension in off-season for around $16M/APY. (How the heck did Hockenson get $16.5M/APY.
- PJJ -- he gets his extension after the 2026 season
Other FA's who should get contracts in off-season - - Evan Brown -- continues continuity on left side and his PFF is good.
- Kyzir White
- Trystan Colon - only age 26 and the injury to Hernandez probably means Monti moves on to this option who has been playing well but won't be expensive.
- Beachum - cheap 1 yr "insurance" for about $3M ?
I do hope Gaines/Adams develop in 2025 as I do not want Monti to take a guard in the first 3 rounds of 2025 draft. OT maybe if a good one is available (not first round - DT definitely). Has Christian Jones practiced better since coming off IR ?

Three years max and we CANNOT continue having two safeties as top three cap hits If Budda is re-signed, then Jalen Thompson could be on the chopping block. Potentially, we might lose Thompson and Sean Murphy-Bunting from the roster in 2025, which would open up gaps on the roster that would need filling. - It's a possibility, but I don't think Murphy-Bunting's contract is an easy one to get out (would be expensive), although I have not investigated this properly.

Unfortunately it seems SMB will be with us, currently our 8th highest paid player, until 2026 if we don’t want massive dead money with little cap relief. In his final contract year 2026 he can be cut with $2 million dead cap and $7.5 million cap relief.

He plays well every other season, so be ready for a down year after giving him his bag.

A renaissance of sorts for Buddha. Big decision in the off season. I have mixed feeling about an aging safety. You dont want to tie to much money up in safety. But he's special.
You always want to cut a guy loose a year early then be stuck with a big cap hit on an unproductive player. Safeties often go down in flames just from the nature of the position.
