I didn't get to see the Chargers game but reading many of the comments lately, it seems as if folks are saying MHJ has some serious issues of disinterest when plays aren't coming his way. This makes me wonder, what's our number one problem? It's hard to say it's our defense when some weeks such as this last one, it holds the opposition in check, even when our offense doesn't produce as much. (judging by box score)
As many of you may recall, I really wanted to trade back last year, and take another WR or my favorite player, Broderick Bowers. (If we absolutely had to take a pass catcher) Bowers is currently second in the NFL with 47 catches, averaging 10+ yards per catch. While many were hammering the table for MHJ, I kept saying if we want to run the ball effectively and maximize play action, Bowers and McBride together would have opened up so many double-tight opportunities for us. This isn't a knock on Reinman either. I like the latter, but Bowers is a game changer. But I digress, this isn't about Bowers. It's about MHJ.
It's hard to read these 'disinterested' posts, about whether it's MHJ's fault or Kyler's potential bad influence, because so much of the pro-MHJ draft camp was all about 'pedigree' excuse for drafting him. I used to think it mattered, but does it still given these kids start earning large NIL contracts in college? I think NIL has really screwed development because these kids are now paid for their personalities more so than performance, before they ever take an NFL snap. And once you start making $$s without needing to put your body on the line, where's the incentive for most to want to be interested on plays not coming to them? But I digress, this connundrum is beyond the scope of this post.
Our DL is probably our number one issue now, but I don't think it will be next year. I fully expect us to heavily invest there next season. The good news is, if you watched last week's Texas and Georgia game, there are some real game changers available. The edge rushers and interior DL coming out should be FAR better than last year's class. (will comment further later) If we assume our DL gets fixed in the off season, do we think Murray or MHJ are going to be our number one issue?
Potential Fixes:
Georgia - If you watched the Texas game, Jalen Walker absolutely destroyed Texas LT (Kelvin Banks), the latter who was supposed to be the best LT in the country, and someone FAR better than Christian Jones. I mentioned this during last year's draft, how Texas had two OL this year that were both far better than Christian, which is why I didn't want to prioritize CJ last year. Before last week, Texas LT hadn't allowed a single pressure, and he dominated folks last year as well. When he met Jalen Walker, JW abused him like a rag doll. So much so, I thought Walker looked even better than the last few Georgia pass rushers that entered the NFL. Mykel Williams also looks like a stud as expected, and while still recovering from an injury and playing limited snaps, he's explosive to. It's harder to know which one is better but I do think Walker looks like he's thicker and should hold up better against the run.
Texas -
Texas may have one of the best 'interior' DL guys for us to prioritize. Georgia's OL held up much better than Texas, but Texas had at least two DL who also looked like they can man handle OL. Especially against the run. What really stood out about Texas defense was also transfers into its secondary. It got several transfers from Clemson who made some amazing interceptions and pass deflections. I seriously doubt we are going to add more secondary talent, but Texas' defense is also stacked with some serious talent just like Georgia.
Here are the current odds on next year's top picks:
Carson Beck, Georgia: +600 (bet $10 to win $70 total)
Quinn Ewers, Texas: +600 (bet $10 to win $70 total)
Travis Hunter, Colorado: +750 (bet $10 to win $85 total)
Shedeur Sanders, Colorado: +850 (bet $10 to win $95 total)
Jalen Milroe, Alabama: +1000 (bet $10 to win $110 total)
Cam Ward, Miami: +1000 (bet $10 to win $110 total)
Kelvin Banks Jr., Texas: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total)
Will Campbell, LSU: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total)
Mykel Williams, Georgia: +2600 (bet $10 to win $270 total)
Drew Allar, Penn State: +3000 (bet $10 to win $310 total)
Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss: +3000 (bet $10 to win $310 total)
It's interesting to me that Jalen Walker isn't even on the list. I know QBs always get the most love, but I'm not sure any of next year's QBs are sure things. If I wasn't going to go DL, with someone like Walker, I think I'd actually want Travis Hunter - WR or Kelvin Banks - LT. I'm forgetting the two Texas DL who impressed me during the Georgia game, but it's also a unit to keep an eye on. Despite Walker abusing Banks, for one game, Banks actually looks far more dominant than most the LT's that entered the draft in a few years. It'll be interesting to see if he just had a one-off game. If we did go OL early, he's probably going to be off the board by pick 5 so we likely can't get him.

It would be nice to have Bowers or Nabers plus another defensive front 7 1st rounder right now. I also think we will invest heavily in the Dline next free agency and draft. I’d warn people off from thinking the Chargers game means our defensive line is any good. The Chargers have been the lowest scoring team this year averaging only 15 pts per game…which is what they scored against us. I do love that we were able to shut a good running game down and keep them out of the end zone, despite giving up a ton of yards.

As far as #1 problem? I do think it is currently Dline/pass rush followed by Oline. The Oline only looks good because Kyler can escape the rush so well. Count the seconds he has to throw or escape the pocket and you will see.
On offense I think we have all the weapons Kyler needs and we are young…MHJ, McBride and Wilson plus Benson. A big question mark is Conner. We are not the same team without him, but age in all likelihood will be a factor soon. If he would do one year contracts that would be great, but I think he will land one last big deal somewhere else. Oline IMO remains the #1 problem on offense.
On defense I think the DBs are not great but are not the #1 problem. We will just have growing pains with them, as Williams and Melton and Rabbit are young and we may lose Budda. Were we do have a real problem is LBs…both ILB and OLB, and our interior Dline. Hopefully Ojulari comes back next year strong and DRob is what we hope, but the defense up front is still such a patchwork. I love that Naquan Jones has a few sacks, but c’mon…he was cut By Tenn and picked up here out of desperation, then cut again and brought back out of desperation.

K1 has Harrison, and look at how that Ossenfort shotgun marriage is turning out. Who is at fault? I have an idea.

As the QB position of the defense they are more valuable than the NFL values them. The Steelers have valued the position for years and thus the consistency in defense. I loved Payton Wilson who as of now could have been picked at Elijah Jones’ draft position and is 6’4” and has coverage and pass rush skills with uncommon speed. So many modern ILBs are under sized and fast. Detroit drafted high for Captain Jack Campbell another tall ILB and the fools that signed Nowaske from the Lion’s last year put him on the PS and now he is starting for the Lions and in a couple games played he has 9 tackles and 2 sacks at 6’3” 240 is the long LB to plug and play where needed. In 2024 JR Jake Goladay is the rare long LB in college… not sure if he will declare for the NFL in 2025…but he is one to watch. It takes two good to great LBs with coverage and pass rush skills to function well in the NFL.

#1 problem to fix in 2025 is the #1 problem in 2024.
Bringing in talent is not the problem, the problem is getting over systemic problems the team faces and doesn’t solve.
The young coaches are still struggling with player evaluations and use of players.
The great teams kill the 3-5th rounds of the drafts. Part is getting the talent and getting a few steals with little investment and the backside is maximizing the talent that is brought in.
The Cards are trending up in these areas and also showing signs of failures or trending towards failure in recognition of talent and using the talent correctly.
Very little room for error at the NFL level.
The coaches have used their mulligans already in 2024 and need to stabilize the production on the field.

I'll be prioritizing this position for the 2025 draft and look forward to debating the merits (of the prospects) nearer the time. - We certainly need another one.

Markus Golden, Devon Kennard, Dennis Gardeck, Isaiah Simmons, and Victor Dimukeje: all are familiar names and often mentioned in the sports media and Forum as potential replacements for DE Chandler Jones who, as a Free Agent sniffed at Steve Kiem's offer, and then skedaddled for the Las Vegas Raiders dollars ($17M 3-yr contract) where he said he was working for money worthy of his talent and time.
Since Jones hit the road, the Cardinals have been looking for that right guy.
I still have no clue when 2024 rookie DE Darius Robinson will be cleared to join the Cardinals' active roster. He remains snap-less. Robinson began the regular season on injured reserve due to a calf injury he sustained during the late stages of training camp. His 21-day practice window opened Oct. 9, meaning that he would have to miss the entire 2024 regular season if he's not activated off injured reserve by Oct. 30.

It's the front 7.
Ojulari's injury may take up to 2 years to get back to 100%. He'll play next year, but I doubt he meets his original potential next year.
Guys I'm interested in.
Mason Graham: DT. He will go early though.
Nic Scourton: DE. Awesome lateral movement.
Abdul Carter:OLB. Athletic ILB converyed to edge with bend.
Jack Sawyer:DE. Very athletic, would be a round 2 guy for me, but he might go earlier.
Its also a very good RB class. Tons of options here.

What about the way MHJ is struggling in his rookie year here and everybody seems to ignore it mid-season? The elephant in the room is growing, even though the team sat on their #4 pick in the 1st round in order to be able to have a new #1 WR. Now THIS? “Oh Gee, we don’t know what to do to improve this situation”? MO should be livid. Crickets. JG and Petzing, KM and others are involved as well. It’s starting to look like they all have their heads jammed tightly up their cabooses and are clueless about the situation. MHJ should be scoring a TD nearly every game and ending the season with around 1000 yards. Yes. I am aware that rookie WRs can often struggle year one. That is a lame, rusty, tired excuse in this instance. Start him off early with a few easy passes every game and build from there. He should be getting targeted at least 7 times per game IMO. Bottom line? Do SOMETHING!?!?!

Landon Jackson is still the guy I love. Here is a quote from PFF: • Jackson possesses a relentless motor from all positions: This season, he has featured at 0-technique nose, 3-technique defensive tackle, 5-technique defensive end, outside and even inside linebacker, with left and right versatility throughout. • The 45th-ranked player on PFF's 2025 NFL Draft Big Board: Jackson’s pass-rush win rate and pressure percentage this season are both above 11% for the first time in his career. He’s also just three pressures away from his single-season career high, with almost half a season still to go. To have another pair with DRob at 6'7" 280 LBs Landon is a man from the SEC (LSU and Arkansas) he will be 22 years old and plenty of snaps and starts. I like his pass rush and love his run defense. Build a long and strong DL.

As per OL in 2025 the number one priority is Guard. Why not dip into OSU again? Donovan Jackson 6'4" 320 LBs and a former partner of Paris'. Here is a quote for analysis on him:
Donovan Jackson was one of the best players in the 2021 recruiting class and the best interior prospect. While piling up accolades in high school, he was an All-American and five-star recruit, the highest-ranked offensive lineman in Ohio State’s recruiting class. Jackson has played in all 39 games he’s been available for while starting 26 straight games at left guard for the Buckeyes, showing a true “Iron Man” mentality in his young career.
Finding his name on the ‘Outland Award Watch List’ for 2024, Jackson has one of the best all-around talent pools in the 2025 draft class. With a true NFL frame standing at 6-foot-4 and 320 pounds, Jackson has superior length and movement to match. He’s looking to put a stamp on his collegiate career and be one of, if not the first offensive lineman drafted in 2025.
Jackson’s first step is explosive and intends to dislodge defenders with vertical or lateral movement. He quickly gets through doubles, knocking defensive linemen to help blockers and climbing to the second level to give running backs clear rush paths. He’s a violent player with pop in his hands and is paired with his length to knock back defenders and keep them in front of him. He’s a scheme-versatile run blocker who displays elite pulling technique and efficiency with no wasted movement and quickly gets down the line or out in space. He’s an intentional blocker who works his head to the play side when he can but also adjusts his blocks for the best possible outcome, showcasing his football IQ. His ability to alter his blocks to create lanes based on the defenders is elite.
As a pass protector, he can jump and vertically set without problems. Jackson has adequate hand carriage and quick strikes, correctly mirroring and mixing up his strikes between two hands and single jabs. He could use a little extra sand in the pants to dig deep and re-anchor, but he consistently redistributes power and takes over bull-rushing defenders. When beaten, he has lightning-quick reflexes to relocate his hands and push the rusher over or out of the way of the quarterback, buying a little more time to get the ball away.
Jackson’s most significant area of improvement comes with being top-heavy in run and pass blocking. He tends to lunge at defenders, occasionally lowering his head and giving them the upper hand to pull him through or take the outside gaps to the ball-carrier. The push-pull shows up against Jackson, who tends to be top-heavy, and defenders can quickly beat him as a pass rusher during those times. Keeping his feet underneath him while attached will improve his gap protection.
Jackson has a few consistency areas to clean up. Still, he’s easily one of the best offensive linemen in the country, and his blend of athleticism, size, and length will make him a challenging task for any defensive lineman.
Another player with plenty of experience and will be 22 at the draft.

Not sure if he commits to the NFL in 2025...Sonny Style at 6'4" 240 LBs now at LB for OSU and a former safety who has transitioned to LB and is excellent at run defense. Here is a article about him:
Now at 240 lbs, Styles has established himself in the front seven, rather than a fringe safety or linebacker. The move also helped play to his strengths as a great runner defender. The junior struggled at times in coverage last season, but finished with an 84.2 overall run grade in 2023, according to PFF.
Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles clearly saw his capabilities in the run game towards the end of last year, as Styles played 37 snaps in the box during last year's victory over Rutgers. He ended with four total tackles and three stops, while recording a 92.3 run defense grade from PFF.
Through the first two games of the 2024 season, the veteran defender has clearly embraced the position change. Nearly 85 percent of the snaps taken by Styles have been within the box. Putting a defender with his skill set inside the box will slowly pay off for the Buckeyes, especially in the team's run defense.
He would make a great ILB and the size of Warner and playing for Ohio you know he has been coached well.

At edge a perfect fit for AZ is Kyle Kennard with four years of starts and great production and currently at South Carolina. Kyle is 6'5" 245 LBs. Excellent measurables and consistent play and production and about a 2nd to 3rd round projection.

I love the long and strong versatile DL players. He is very fun to watch. If we paired him with Roninson, they would definitely present an intimidating pair of butt kickers. Great at the run, and more of a disrupter vs sack-er. Disruption is production though.
