The Cardinals have the elements or pieces to have good on field success, however there is the FAFO factor that continues to appear in games. Sometimes it comes out at the start as per the defense and sometimes it appears as the game goes on as per the offense.
When a team or unit screws around they find out what happens (FAFO). It isn't a lack of talent since it comes and goes within games. Coach-speak calls it inconsistent play. Why do the Cardinal units put garbage on tape? Yet they also have some good to great results out of each unit.
The old Cardinals could or many times fell into the undermanned team that would surprise a good team once in a while. The current team has a high amount of money invested in the offense. The OL is in the top half of the NFL...even after multiple injuries. QB is performing in the top 10, the RB room is top 10, the WR room is top 10 and the TE room is top 5. The defense is performing in a similar way of the low amount of money invested on that side of the ball. There is truth in defense wins championships and we are seeing this being proven true so far in 2024.
The real frustration is in the FAFO factor that appears in the games in 2024. Some drives the defense is terrible and some drives they stop the run and can cover. The offense on most opening drives look like one of the best in the NFL and score TDs. Then there is inconsistency after the opening drive.
On the defense the one thing that sticks out is lack of talent on the DL and poor pass rush with four man rushes. The apparent fix on defense is play personnel packages that are big enough to stop the run...they can gamble losing in the pass game, but to lose by rush success is the worse of the two evils. Also the need to be determined to rush at least 5 players on all pass plays. As well as adding at least an extra pass rusher the controlled pass rush and creating pass rush layers. The current pass rush has no pressure and many open lanes for the QB. At least take space away from the QB and have layers of rushing defenders to limit any QB escapes. The second issue is the short zone coverage players are not driving on the check down players...this can be coached up. The personnel is also a coaching choice. Most of the defensive woes are coaching or lack of following coaching. The lower quality DL and pass rush personnel is what it is this season. Screwing around with desired personnel groupings and desired low rate of blitzing has resulted in finding out the results when these are attempted (FAFO). As per coaching the defense throw away what may be the desired schemes and run what is actually required. STOP THE RUN and if they are going to get beat force it by the air. CONTROLLED PASS RUSH WITH AT LEAST 5 PLAYERS if they cannot create sacks do not give the QB open lanes or allow easy short dump-offs get too much positive yards.
The offense is being coached or play calling is too stubborn as per predictable runs and lack of creativity is getting the ball to the best weapons. The X WR is almost always the X and the Z is almost always the Z. Pre-snap motion with MHJ playing multiple WR positions and now the mix of Zay doing the same is vital. There is too much trying to get Conner in the pass game in tight areas with blockers over getting him into short open space w/o blocks so as not to draw too many defenders...Conner is a man you want one on one....not a small shifty back with blockers in tight spaces.
MHJ needs to be encouraged to drive on routes and to use his body to shield defenders as well as aggressively snatch balls in the air over waiting for the ball to come to him. Tip should have a few short dump offs to him every game a 3-5 yard play from him makes a smaller defender tackle him and makes the defense to use coverage on him.
K1 and Petzing have to excel at spreading the ball to every weapon. Petzing has to get creative in his calls. There have been evidence of great offense, but the screwing around and finding out the results (FAFO)of lack of consistency on offense puts the defense in a bind with too many 3 and outs. Get great at moving the chains.
As much as I like Higgins he has had too many mental errors and maybe the larger Vokolek needs to be active over him this week.
We are far enough in the season and the FAFO the results have been evident too often. The Players are guilty, but too many times the coaches have not put them in the best position to win. Screw around and find out what happens effect needs to be limited.
