Post Mortem
A thread to dissect and evaluate a dead team.
JG did say it starts with him. I agree. Here is one opinion, it may be raw, but feel free to share your take on it.
Was thinking of writing a little piece conjecturing about
what Mike B might discuss with MO and all the coaches,
but especially Gannon.
It would center on the constant 'my fault' excuse taken
by Gannon after each loss, and ask why the team that
beat some good teams late last year has all but disappeared.
And I'd also ask him what, if any, changes he has made
as a result of looking into failures by his coaches.
Example: Someone here posted that the Washington
bench was calling out "pass" or "run" PRIOR to most
Cards' plays.....
The poster guessed lip reading of Petzing's play calls.
I also have noticed he never covers his mouth when
making calls on the radio, so that could be the reason.
His head is down looking at his play sheet at belly
level, with nothing covering his mouth and lips.
That's a coaching failure by Petzing and a failure by
Gannon for either not knowing or not correcting it. As
JG is watching the game action and not his coaches,
he may not be aware of that problem, or it may never
be shown on the NFL game film for coaches. IDK.
Maybe he just needs to watch network TV coverage
like we homebound experts.
Or, someone, somehow might monitor radio conversations
between "upstairs" coaches, the sidelines and the QB.
Secure radios are essential for each competing team...
but are they, really? Ample room there for some covert
activities by gambling entities, or others. Money does
corrupt humanity, as proven by history.
IMO it is past time for JG to stop "it's all on me and it's
my fault", and to demand specifics of why this and that
are happening, then remedy those causes. It can't all
be "failure to execute" by team members, and I think
there is ample reason to question coaching prep,
opposition research and even ability.
JG should be as surgical with coaches who cannot
produce as with rating, playing and keeping
players. Quality coaches aren't around to be
hired at will at any time, but still, why tank a season
if there is a problem with one or more of them?
give the job to another coach on the staff in the
interim, or take it over himself.
There is a possibility that MB has told both MO and
JG they must work with Murray since we have to eat
his contract for a while yet... and if so that would
explain a lot of things. But we don't know if that
is the case, or if MB would agree to seek another
QB at first opportunity. (something we should have
done in the past year or earlier, again IMO)
A team cannot have too many battle-ready QBs, and
if the cost is questioned, the answer is that there is
always a market for the good ones and draftees are
a bargain. Good QBs are like money in the bank, but
in human form. Draft one every year, needed or
not, and trade or cut those who cannot perform.
Some will argue that we need a tackle, receiver, an
edge rusher or whatever - but it's a matter of value
and priority, and most of all, how many good
ones are ever available. Supply and demand are
the keys.
Instead, we have almost always had backups who were
barely adequate or less, and too many times found
that fact ruined seasons of football for the Cardinals
when injury occurred.
Will we never learn that success requires a good to
great QB being the center of any winning team, and
that a very good backup (or two) is cheap insurance?
Will we always be the same old Cardinals doing the
same old things, never learning from our mistakes?
Not sure I want to hear the answer to that last query.
My personal take is that of wanting a coaching staff and HC in particular to be hands on during a game. Players get sideways mentally the stress of the conflicts during a game and they need direction at that time.
When Bo Nix can win a NFL game with 12 completions and 60 yards passing...there is some coaching being done to seal the deal. It also requires superb defense as well.
Monti is to blame for having CAP space on not signing the right defensive FAs Early. He can also be to blame for not picking more DL help early in the draft 2-3 round plus the Robinson pick.
JG and staff are to blame for the results and performances of the players. It is disappointing that the defense after 4 games is the worse in the NFL. Even a top 20-24 ranking defense would help. The offense is where all the gems have been placed and where the money has been spent. A top 5 offense is a possibility and a top 10 offense is a must to be competitive. The phrase complementary FB comes to mind. The offense is poor and the defense is trash they are complementary in the wrong way.
The defense needs to be protected by the better offense and instead the defense is playing upto the money invested in it and the sports car offense is having problems getting out of the pit area.
There is a team problem.
