Despite the frustration comments. Some have said if the Cards: If only the team invested in the OL.
Reality Paris Johnson is a 83.5 PFF LT allowed 2 sacks
Hjalte Froholdt 71.2 PFF C allowed 0 sacks
Evan Brown 65.5 PFF RG and 2 sacks allowed he is the newest member and much better than any 2023 option.
Will Hernandez 66.3 PFF and 0 sacks allowed...he has had a down year...he is a solid OL player despite the poor PFF so far
Kelvin Beachum 66.3 PFF and 3 sacks allowed...he is grandpa and needs a TE to protect him and the coaches keep leaving his right side bare...that is bad coaching, not protecting the biggest weakness. A TE to at minimum to chip before releasing. With Jonah injury who ever is at RT should never be uncovered or not assisted by a TE.
Monti and Sears have provided a good OL, the OC needs to scheme to protect the RT position. K1 needs to help and choose wide open mid or short routes instead of trying the knockout long passes...more balance and take the long short less often.
Demacardo has great rushes in garbage time and a 5.1 pass blocking rating needs him benched and put in a weapon in Carter...JG said players eran snaps or lose snaps based on performance...do what you say.
The WR, RB and QB positions are the next best performing positions and it makes sense with the majority of the CAP being spent on offense.
It is too depressing to list the defensive ratings...I will attempt tomorrow...it is ugly.
One of the things of note on the OL is the need for better play at the interior and Will has had a slow start and Brown is getting better as the new guy...even with the average play of the guards Hjalte is the second best OL player with 0 sacks...this adds to his quality having average play on both sides. Paris was a high first round pick and getting better, Hjalte is a solid large, strong center who can move and he is very consistent, Will is a strong horse and will play better than his slow start. The OL is actually a strength on the team not the problem some think.
Conner has good numbers since he has a solid OL. Kyler could help his OL by playing better

One FA of note Connor Williams center who Seahawks signed has a PFF of 62.6...he is a good player, but it takes time for OL to play as one. Will's 2024 numbers are down without having Paris next to him.
The best OL player in the NFL Trent Williams has a 87 PFF, 1 sack, 2 penalties and 8 pressures. OL play isn't as clean as many think. Be thankful the Cards have a good OL despite it's shortcomings...it is above average.

But Paris looks great and Froholdt keeps proving himself. Our depth? Meh. We miss3d McBride last week. He’s a stud and MHJ is a future stud who is already good but is still a rookie. Wilson needs to continue to improve and Dortch is a dawg but limited. It will be interesting to see Zay Jones get back in the mix. Do we get Williams, Zay Jones and McBride back on offense and DRob back off IR for his first start? I hope so. The defense if you dig down into the plays and numbers is the #1 problem by far. DRob alone won’t fix that. That is a job for free agency and draft 2025.

We rank near the bottom of the league for allowed time to throw. x.com/Kyle_Odegard/status/1841180559051259910?s=19Per tweet: How good are the Cardinals' pass-catchers at getting open? Here is where they rank in ESPN's metrics, out of 80 qualifiers. MHJ: 13th Mike Wilson: 60th Trey McBride: 74th Greg Dortch: 78th Now...Kyler can't run their routes for them. That said, these are good players in my opinion. So what gives? Scheme.

Interesting but mostly useless graph - and hard for old eyes to follow.
I see that Dortch is near to Cooper Kupp - and neither are in the higher category of the graph. I'll take what Dortch does over a lot of guys, especially for his physical size.

Defense
Z Collins 76 PFF overall, but pass rush at 59 PFF...a solid 74 PFF in coverage and run defense 78 PFF...hmmm a MLB playing OLB by the numbers
White 37 PFF and 65 PFF run defense and 29 coverage and a poor tackle rating of 62 PFF...why is he getting snaps?
M Wilson 65 overall PFF, 74 PFF run defense, coverage 57 PFF and 60 PFF tackle rating...those are work able numbers for a MLB
Pappoe 48 PFF overall, and 67 PFF coverage...okay for limited snaps
K Barnes 58 PFF overall and 52 PFF coverage and surprising 74 PFF pass rush...with limited snaps
White has been flat footed in coverage and not filling gaps in the run defense...the numbers support it.
Barbarian 68 PFF overall, 71 PFF pass rush, and 58 PFF run defense... his numbers are okay
Nichols 49 PFF overall...enough said
Stills 57 PFF overall... average...which is good
R Lopez 60 PFF overall...again average
LJ Collier 42 PFF...not good enough
Tonga 60 overall...average
If these numbers don't scream dump the nickel and get a bigger body who has decent coverage skills to protect the 2nd level and be able to run defend...I have no other agent to prove there are tools to get the defense better if used correctly.
Instead of the front seven being OLB, DE, NT, DE, OLB, MLB and NCB it should be OLB, DE, NT, DE, OLB, MLB and MLB
It looks like by the numbers M Wilson and Collins should be the starting MLBs and White needs the pine seat for a bit.
SMB 56 PFF overall isn't getting it done
Williams 67 PFF overall...okay
Thomas 57 PFF... not good enough
Melton 67 PFF
K Clark 85 PFF very limited snaps
Budda 72 PFF
Thompson 52 PFF
Rabbit 66 PFF limited snaps
Easy to see why the Cards are working out LBs for possible additions. I would rather have at least 4 LBs who can play inside or out with coverage and pass rush skills and solid run defense skills over playing 3 LBs and the MLB being a statue with horrible coverage performance and hoping the smaller NCB with sub-par coverage skills and too small to impact the run.
The solution may not be to give up on players like Thompson and White, but maybe sitting on the sidelines a bit and see if they can change what they are doing or not doing.
Most 4-3 teams play 4 DL player in the 280-300 LB range...it comes down to mass as well as skill. playing 2-3 DL players in the 280-300 LB range and 2 OLBs at 240-270 LBs and one of those generally drops into coverage leaves average skill players with less total mass and expect more out of them than their skill or total mass numbers will allow. If they drop 1 OLB in coverage you have a liquid 4-3 that is hard for the offense to read and still keep total mass numbers up as well as putting more players with better coverage skills in less space.
I am not sure why the addition by subtraction isn't being done. Play a more simple defense with the additional LB over a NCB...the run defense will improve and the small safeties can be less engaged in the run defense and more engaged in the coverage and their health will be more sustainable.
Easy to see why the defensive play in the first 4 games is in the 31-32 rankings. Simple adjustments can't hurt if the play is at rock bottom.
I still blame the coaching over player execution at this point. Coaches have to put players in position to win...not play who your favorite scheme is or your favorite player....cough...White and Thompson.

The podcaster mentioned that an empty chair in the Cardinals backfield along with Murray in shotgun also got a 5.1 pass blocking rating for the game. I almost died laughing. That was a good one for the podcaster. Not so good for Demarcardo-do is that the 5.1 rating was real sad. When are we going to see RB Carter again?

I’ve said for years and even a few weeks ago in a thread that you need at least 6 weeks of games before PFF numbers can really begin to show you a player, but trends are emerging. We know Thomson is better than this. But we can’t get by with mostly 60’s and lower rated players and no true 80’s rating studs at the line, midfield or backfield. Our defense is still garbage.

MT, much thanks for the D's hard numbers and your analysis. The Card's D is not impressive. The D is not even average in most positions. I fear the next two games v. SF and GB will highlight the Cardinals glaring D weakness. Another thought...ref bolded text. Was that your coded words for HC Gannon firing DC Rallis? We've seen DC's get canned faster for not putting defenders in positions suited to the intelligence and skills need win most battles. Rallis is exposed.
