PFF high on AZ Cards 2023 draft and potential they had at #1 and #2 pick in 2024 draft...to sum up one of their post 2023 draft comment the Cards above the actual players drafted followed the process. Monti avoids picking Paris at #3 and with a trade down then a trade up to #6 get Paris and draft capital to put them in a great 2024 draft position. The potential #1 and #2 did not happen, however the #4 and #27 and six picks in top 90 are substantial.

I hope the You Tube link works, it is PFF's recent video on the 2024 mock draft for AZ Cardinals. In the last month between the Radio Row interviews at the SB in Vegas and videos like this confirm the respect the Cards are getting from the team's performance in 2023 and the cleaning up of the cap Monti was left with from SK. The draft abilities are also getting respect around the NFL press.

What is your view on the 2023 season? Was it the gold standard in turning around a dysfunctional team left with major roster and contract issues?

Many forum responses post 2023 have had some positive opinions posted with also the thought of not expecting much in 2024 (maybe due to the continual fails after every positive step forward the Cards historically have).

Post 2023 the F- report card...dead last in the NFL and a dead last projection pre 2023 season as per W/L column. How far have JG and Monti distanced themselves from the end of the 2022 season?

Are the expectations to be in the 2024 playoffs realistic?

Probably not, as of February. But maybe, as of May.

There is too much chance of events beyond the team's control
impacting what we would like to achieve vs. what we do or don't.

In the unlikely case of the draft, FA and team health falling
our way we just might make the playoffs in 2024, but too much
depends on pure luck - a factor which has historically been
lacking for the Cardinals. It's a big ask for a total change
in the second year of a rebuild, yet it is possible.

Is the "Pottsville Curse" still haunting this team, or can Monti,
Gannon and company banish it once and for all? Will the changes
in management and coaching continue to improve our performance?
I sense more positive energy than for years, if that counts.

More questions now than answers, but there is real reason for hope.

At what point with the performance of Monti in the 2023 draft and his aggressive willingness to check for grubs under every rock bringing in players on the cheap to find ways to raise the floor of the roster or JG and the new coaches able to coach up a roster of players with a bit of a swinging door with multiple roster moves from game to game and getting buy in and solid play out of chicken scratch at times. K1 proved his willingness to play under center and take a step forward as a team leader and supporting the new staff and willingness to not to call out obvious mistake of a rookie WR and rather take the high road. Real progression for a dumpster fire team post 2022. Monti currently has the keys and the most draft capital in the 2024 draft plus the most cap space the Cards have had in years. Cards had return on rookies in 2023. Long story short...this isn't the same old Cardinals. IMHO (not to steal another's words or catch-phrase)

Outside the desert, the Seachickens have a rookie HC and Niner's have to have somewhat of a SB lose hangover and the NFC is not the strength of the NFL. Outside as you brought up medical issues there is much more in positive momentum and a great 2023 foundation to build on than possible negatives. Is there a lack of confidence that Monti will excel in FA? Is there a lack of confidence in Monti navigating the 2024 draft? On the other-hand if there is confidence in Monti's ability, isn't now the time to have confidence in the Cards ability to compete in the 2024 season?

I am going out on the limb that an 8-8 2024 season would be a highly disappointing result. It is a bit of a sad day in Cardinal-land when so many good things are going well that it takes a hard sell to Card fans to have a positive outlook or expect the team at minimum play in the post season.

At what point do the clouds are moving in...attitude of Eeyore ...get replaced with the sun is ...shining?

If you can't have positive expectations in February...every team is undefeated in 2024 currently, it is slim to no chance of being positive in May. IMHO :cheers:

Where do we disagree that much? My point is mainly that events we cannot control have historically made a difference in our record. Last year what happened? KM went down on a freak tweak of his knee with no contact. That was a major source of impactful bad luck. If we do not have or don't draft a strong, capable QB as #2 and KM again goes down, what to expect? How about the #3 QB? Such things cannot be prevented by all the good that Monti and Gannon et al have done and do - so are easily undone by purely "bad luck".

It's the same for all teams, but the Cardinals record has not been positive in the past. If we get lucky in the draft this year, good - and it will certainly impact how well we do with wins vs. losses. But who knows today?

Therefore, if all goes well we could make the playoffs. If events go against us, we might not. Simple. I can't predict either way NOW. But maybe after the draft results it may be easier to prognosticate. That's why I say May as an arbitrary time to reassess things and become more positive. Is being cautiously optimistic that bad?

Granted the new management is far superior to the former, and that does make a big difference. Is it better to expect greatness and be disappointed, or to
expect less and be pleasantly surprised with success? Most of us have been disappointed in the past, so understandably we are slow to change outlooks.
you must remember we are speaking of the Cardinals - a league laggard by record. We have been conditioned to disappointment, yet we hang on. It would be nice to experience the opposite, and we have hope... but always with fingers crossed. I am positive about our assembled team of players and coaches, and with the management group. That's easy. I am less positive about the unknowns we cannot control. That's all.

Is that worth being kicked for merely not being quite so positive, so early in the season?

I laid out a bunch of times exactly a year ago what I thought we should do, centered around the idea that K1’s injury plus the new staff making 2023 a “practice season: such as:

-clean up the Keim contract mess
-go easy in free agency, focusing on young, cheap, special teams and other players with potential to be a Diamond in the rough.
-let Kyler heal 100% and try and get him back for the second half of the season for evaluation
-draft for the future, which was done with trades giving us 2024 draft ammo and taking guys like injured G Williams, a potential first round CB who fell due to injury.
-a focus on building the Oline and run game in preparation for Kyler’s return
-keeping cap money available to roll into 2024…we rolled $11.2 million.
-use the season to take a look at a variety of young players and give the rookies a lot of playing time
-use the season to install a new team mentality and culture
-use the season to develop playbooks
-use the season for the new GM and coaches to ease in to the jobs

I’d say my view of the 2023 season was exactly how it went down. I even predicted 4-5 wins and was totally fine with that.

My expectations for 2024 will be much higher, at least doubling our win total to 8 wins, and playoffs not at all out of the question. We did the right thing last season, and the payoff begins now and should carry through the next five seasons. I’m excited.
