GAME WEEK 16 CARDINALS @ BEARS Its Game Week 16, The Cardinals travel East to Chicago Illinois to play The Chicago Bears. This is the oldest team rivalry in the NFL. For 38 years the teams battled it out in Chicago until in 1960 The Cardinals made the move to St. Louis Missouri. The Bears lead the series 59-29-6. As the league evolved the dynamics of rivalries changed as the more populous states and cities found themselves in different conferences. The NFL has none of the old day crosstown rivals playing against each other on a regular season basis. With three games left to play the Cardinals are inching closer and closer to a top 5 pick or higher in the 2024 NFL Draft. You could say Cardinals Fans will have to wait until April to open their gifts of a bunch of draft choices. In 1929 Ernie Nevers was the gift as he scored 40 points versus the Bears. Cardinals fans have to patiently wait for their presents. The Bears are coming off a 20-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Quarterback Justin Fields completed less than 50% of his passes threw for two interceptions and one touchdown in the game. He was 19-40 for 166 yards. The Bears had no offense as they were held to 12 first downs and less than 240 yards of offense. The Arizona Cardinals were slapped around Sunday by the 49ers by a score of 45 to 29. Kyler Murray went 26-39 for only 211 yards. He threw for 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Its hard to have confidence when the guy on the other side of the field Brock Purdy throws for 4 touchdowns and has a QB rating of 146. He went 16-25 for 242 yds. Perhaps, the most disappointing aspect of the game is the Cardinals again had no answer for RB Christian McCaffrey who had over 189 yards of total offense most of it on rushing for 115 yards. He had three touchdowns. Lack of improvement since the last game is inexcusable for a defense that keyed on the 49ers running back. There are three games to go in the season. The Cardinals are looking like the team that the media expected this season. Lack of a pass rush was a killer in this game. Nil production from wide receivers was profound on offense. This team has a lot of holes to fill as the season winds down. Players who are on the bubble for next season need to step up and show their worth if they want to be here in 2024 www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/remember-when-star-fb-ernie-nevers-scores-40-points-in-1929/

I posted a new thread on 12/18 asking if DC Rallis should be fired in January. The Cardinals defense had one big job on Sunday - contain McCafferty. The defense had no answer for MCM. The defense could not get to QB Purdy. The defense could not cover a WR with a map. The defense gave up 45 points. It doesn't get any worse that Sunday.
Race to the bottom -- Chicago won't beat down Arizona. The two teams are about evenly matched. That's so sad to say. The Bears and Cardinals own some of the NFL's worst game day statistics through 14 games in 2023.

interesting fact: The Arizona Cardinals are the oldest team in the NFL and along with the Chicago Bears, is one of only two teams that were part of the inaugural NFL roster.

A game we could win but at this point it's better we don't.

Some of these guys were newly elevated from practice squads.
The Bears defense has steadily improved this year...especially after the acquisition of Sweat.
Let's keep all of this in mind on game day.

The Bears defense has steadily improved this year...especially after the acquisition of Sweat. Let's keep all of this in mind on game day. I'm re-posting a portion of the OL/QB thread I just created after looking at PFF rankings - "This week's match-up vs. the Bears intrigues me. At the end of last weekend, I said this is a key game for my evaluation of Kyler. One might argue Stroud is MVP and could outplay Kyler, but there' is no excuse for Josh Fields to do so. His OL ranks worse than Kyler and his RBs are by committee. He certainly doesn't have Connor to help take the load off. All he has is DJ Moore. Our TE ranks better than theirs. Our secondary WRs rank better than theirs. So if 4 out of 5 of our skill options rank higher, and our OL ranks better, it's hard to justify Kyler doesn't have more help. The Bears defense isn't that great either. They signed Montez Sweat but lost their only other pass rusher to injured reserve, so it's pretty much Sweat and one solid CB that are worth a damn, no one else."Our defense currently grades as the worst, but how much of that is due to last weekend's beatdown in San Fran? How much of that is due to poor QB play where Kyler does tons of 3 and outs? Our defense wasn't always ranked the worst so some of this is a function of time of possession. This is as close to a wash as two teams can get, talent wise. The edge should go to experience and we have a more experienced QB. Unfortunately, winning this game would crush my draft pick hopes. PS.. The Bears also have 2 WRs sick/nursing injuries and other key guys who may not play. So this is pretty much going to be Fields/DJ Moore. I'd expect we double team the guy and if their TE beats us, a guy who is average, so be it. But our LBs and safeties should be able to cover him especially given their OL is so bad and their running backs aren't that great. This game likely comes down to 4 things: 1. Coaching 2. Whether WR's drop a bunch of balls 3. Whether Connor has another huge day. If he goes off for 150+ I don't see how we lose. 4. Whether either QB makes boneheaded turnovers. Given each team is facing subpar defenses, there is no reason for them to make these mistakes, short of mental deficiencies.

The analysts don't like the Cardinals in this 4:25 ET game. The big brains are giving the Bears -4.0 points. That's difference is understandable: -3 points for homefield, and -1 point because after 14 games, the Bears offense scored more points and the defense gave up fewer points than the Cardinals have this season. About 1-4, above... 1. Coaching is a wash. The Bears' HC Eberflus is working hard to the finish line, barely holding onto his job since the Bears D is showing some improvement the last half of the season. The Cardinals' HC Gannon is working hard always, and has people in the locker room believing in the new system, and so he gets a bye on negative and positive comments in 2023. The Coordinators are the men that most affect the game, IMV. They call play-by-play tactics. Tactics matter on each play and each players' results. 2. The # dropped passes will be above the norm due to the talent and possibly the rain/drizzly conditions. Brown is worthless. Wilson might play but has not been useful lately. McBride seems to be the only guy playing with high energy, discipline, and precision. 3. Connor might eclipse 100 all-purpose yards if Murray can find him in the middle on dink and dunk passes. D-Man might add 20-25 yards if he runs for 4 qtrs. Dortch is 5'7". Moore is his twin. Enough said about them. I don't see the Bears' defense taking plays off like the 49ers did last week. The Cardinals will be lucky to get 300 net yards. 4. Turnovers is a wash. If the Bears get ahead early, plan on Murray to go 100% shotgun formation and then toss 1-2 INTs. MC & HNY
