S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. for short. Or how bout, Someone Hopefully Appreciates Reigns Team Average Stat System? ... no wait. Well boys and girls ... do you need me to take another stab at that banner xD? It's still the dead offseason, so let me see if I can explain the madness with this one. It looks at the offensive/defensive strength of a team in a "strength of schedule" sorta way, but instead of wins, it's about yards. Teams aren't just ranked by how many yards they've accumulated, but instead, the offensive and defensive strength of your opponents are factored into the equation. Is the 5th ranked offense actually better than the 10th ranked offense if it played a much easier defensive schedule? Maybe? This attempts to address that problem. First, let me use the Cardinals game against Las Vegas as an example to explain how the sausage is made ... The Raiders defense gave up an average of 363 yards per game (not including this game), and the Cardinals offense racked up 413 total yards against them, giving the Cardinals offense a net of +50 yards (or S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. points) for this one game. The Raiders offense gained an average of 354 yards per game (not including this game), but in this one they only gained 324 yards against the Cardinals defense, giving the Cardinals defense a net -30 yards for the game (negative is better on defense), or a net total of net +81 for the game (offense and defense combined). It's more important that you beat an opponents average than how many yards were gained or prevented in this system. I then tally up all the games and divide by the number of games played to get a season/game average. The NFL hasn't always played a 17 game schedule, and the game has evolved a bit over the past 6 decades, so then I normalized the results allowing for the ranking and comparison of teams from any and all eras, head to head, no matter how many games they played. That's what the historical ranks are all about at the bottom of the chart. This particular project just focuses on total yards, but I can also compare/rank teams by points, passing, and rushing. Having said all that, here are the 2022 Cardinals game by game results. Any questions xD? Here's the ugly legend explaining what all that means. And if you plot all the 2022 teams on a graph by their offensive and defensive averages (ghosted helmets = last years results): Yep that was one ugly season, even by S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. standards, and it cost Clifford his job. Is Murray next? Are you guys collapsing for Caleb in 2023? Well there isn't much to say about 2022 other than I enjoyed watching you guys on Hard Knocks haha. That Budda Baker is quite the character, and ohhh boy that sister of his xD. So how bout we take a look at the 2008 season instead? I can't figure out how you guys got to a Super Bowl at 9-7, or I can't figure out how you only went 9-7 lol. No wait, how the hell did you lose to Tarvaris Jackson by 3 TD's? The offense was great, but I guess it was that pass defense. In fact those results at the bottom are eerie similar to the 2022 Vikings. A historically bad run to pass ratio, combined with a really bad pass defense. The Vikings played like a 9-7 team that was more lucky than good until the luck ran out in January. Perhaps I should've done the 2015 Cardinals? That was a pretty good 13-3 S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. team that made it to the NFCCG with Carson Palmer. Unfortunately for you, that was the year Cam Newton played out of his mind. I think you guys easily beat Peyton Manning and his noodle arm in the Bowl, like 9-6 or something because of that Broncos defense. As a bonus, I'm including the 2022 S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. Chiefs for everyone, because it's one of the only other ones I've created so far xD. Meant to humble us all. Let me know if you're interested in seeing any of the other 1800 teams going back to 1960 and I'll see which ones I can get to. The graphics take a little while to make so I'll get to as many as I can, or I can always just post the numbers too. I've seen all the data and there are some surprises in there. 2000 Ravens defense? Not as impressive when you consider the pathetic offenses they faced that year xD. Feel free to visit the other boards to see some of their results ... and read most of this post again haha. Checkout those fraudulent Vikings, or '85 Bears. And if you're not aware, these are all proboards boards, so your account here can be used to sign on any of the others too. You'll have to "create it" on each board first, but that's how it works if I remember correctly, or just visit as a guest. The cross traffic helps all of us in the analytics department anyway xD. The real reason behind this entire thing muahahaha. S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. for short. I won't repost the entire thing again in the interest of keeping this brief, but do have comments:
First, it's good to see you back on this board again! I had about given up.
I know you excel at graphic presentations and statistics, but man, this has to be borderline or maybe actual OCD at work. I am amazed, and highly impressed. Applause, applause!!
Your post is overwhelming in it's complexity and detailed graphics. It takes real study and attention, but worth the effort. I wish there had been more green to show for our
team record, but it is what it was - a really bad year for a team used to being in the
bottom tier of most all statistics.
But there is Hope! We have a new GM, almost all new coaches, and definitely a new attitude being infused this time. Gone are the relics of failure, and the team is bit by bit being remolded into something not seen in Cardinal land for ages, if at all. It's a bold series of moves intended to break away from "the same old Cardinals" syndrome which has plagued this team. We need luck, effort and support, the latter of which is largely gladly given by fans. After all, who doesn't want to be part of a successful organization, even if from the cheap seats or foreign lands?
I hope you are given the chance to be part of that support, here on the forum site. It's overdue. Waaaay overdue.
Any other comments about your SMARTASS system will be reserved for a PM at a later time... but I do like the acronym!! That's a Reignman winner...

Excellent post! I need to dig into this stuff today. Stand by... Take your time, and feel free to ask questions. This is an ongoing project, so I'm not going anywhere. I suggest taking close notice of this important line and responding positively:
"Well boys and girls ... do you need me to take another stab at that banner xD?" Knobby!! The Knobster!! Lol well I'm not here to cause trouble. I just wanted a friendly greeting that also incorporated the smartassery theme of this project . I like to have fun with the things I do, and I know this board has a good cast of characters. First, it's good to see you back on this board again! I had about given up. Thanks! Give up? Me? Never! The Cards were kind of a mess last year, so I didn't have much to contribute and maybe you guys weren't in the mood for my nonsense xD. Plus my eyes have been giving me trouble the past year, so I've been less active everywhere xD. They've been feeling better lately so I decided to get this project knocked out. I've been working on it for awhile. I know you excel at graphic presentations and statistics, but man, this has to be borderline or maybe actual OCD at work. I am amazed, and highly impressed. Applause, applause!! Lol yeah you could say that. The OCD that went into this one! Ooooo boy. I didn't like the original design, so it took awhile to come up with something new. Then I went through several redesigns and a million tweaks. Killing my eyes all over again just to get a handful of pixels just right. I enjoy this stuff though. I just wish my eyes enjoyed it as much as I do xD. I wish there had been more green to show for our
team record, but it is what it was - a really bad year for a team used to being in the
bottom tier of most all statistics. Well you guys know the Cardinals better than I do, so if you want to see the chart of a squad that might produce more green numbers, let me know. 2015 looks like a good candidate. Your team has moved several times too, so I'm not sure if you guys even care about the St. Louis chapter. You have a few good S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. teams sprinkled back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. How far back do some of you go as Cardinals fans? I can't relate to a team moving. The Twins started in Washington and moved to Minnesota in 1961, but that's before my time, and nobody seems to acknowledge that Washington period. It's as if we got an expansion team in 1961 xD. But there is Hope! We have a new GM, almost all new coaches, and definitely a new attitude being infused this time. What do you guys think is going to happen with Murray? You just gave him that huge contract, but I'm seeing rumors you guys might tank for Caleb next year. I can already see Vikings fans next offseason, LETS TRADE FOR MURRAY!!! lol it's an annual tradition up here. This past year it was Lamar Jackson and Trey Lance. Personally I don't want anything to do with Kyler Murray. I think he's fun to watch as a player, the Dante Hall of QB's, but he's such a buzzkill, and has that pouty attitude. Gone are the relics of failure Yeah like I said, I was just starting to like some of these personalities watching Hard Knocks, even Kliff and Keim. Any other comments about your SMARTASS system will be reserved for a PM at a later time... Well feel free to share some of those comments publicly too. I can take criticism haha. To me the whole thing looks exactly how I imagined, but I'm not sure how anyone else sees it. If it's confusing or too messy, someone needs to let me know. The OCD is always looking for more pixels to move around.

Not to derail this amazing thread into a banner discussion, but I've made a compromise. I've added your board to our affiliates sidebar xD. We had a Packers board there, but it disappeared, and I come here more anyway. I mean look at this, Funkytown is already picking at old wounds with this gem I'm sure you guys will appreciate. So - will we be seeing something better for a new forum header soon? I can't show examples of or links to Reignman's work here because imagur.com, the site previously used for picture storage and reference, now seems to require membership to access stored graphics.

Reignman! The man who created my avatar, which is still my favorite play in Cardinal’s history. Too bad disaster struck minutes later.
I’m going to not click the link on the ‘85 Bears because I was a 15 year old Chicago kid and Bears fanatic in ‘85, with Walter Peyton and Fridge posters on my bedroom walls and “SuperBowl Shuffle” in the tape deck. I’m afraid something in that link may negatively affect my childhood memories!
Anyway, as a former and still somewhat Bears fan I always knew you were some sort of an idiot, but after that post you’re clearly an idiot savant, not the bad kind of idiot like I am. Well done and am I wrong or does this show that we Cardinals were just a bit bad at offense and defense and potentially on the cusp of greatness if we can fix each just enough to move Northeast on the graph? We have the new GM, the new coaching staff, and next year a ton of cash and draft picks!
Bit wait. I just remembered we also have the same ownership, and the reality that all data and analysis fly out the window when discussing our AZ Cardinals.
Good luck this year and thanks for your excellent work on many NFL boards!

1968 for me. And Yes the St. Louis Cards in the Coryell "era" are my fondest memories!
The Great Wall that only allowed 7 sacks all season was a Special O-line (Dierdorf, Dobler, Banks/Brahaney, Young, Finne). Terry Metcalf, Jim Otis, Mel Gray, Jackie Smith, JV Cain, and Jim Hart at QB with Jim Bakken Field Goal Kicker were the Original Cardiac Cards.
Yankowski, Rowe, Arneson, Stallings, Barnes, Wehrli, Reaves, Thompson, Duren on Defense.
1975 Record was 11-3; only projected to win 5 to 9 games that year. My 1st Full season back home out of the Army since the 1971 season.

Folks, My logo is courtesy of Reignman He did it for me a few years ago. I love it! Reignman! The man who created my avatar, which is still my favorite play in Cardinal’s history. Well I'm glad to see you guys are still using them, but I hope you don't feel obligated xD. Sometimes you just need a change. I change mine often when the mood hits me. I can even make new ones if you have something in mind, send me a PM. the site previously used for picture storage and reference, now seems to require membership to access stored graphics. It shouldn't require membership, you just need to know the link. You need membership if you want to find them without the link or to delete them. You don't want to see the S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. '85 Bears lol? It's a pretty good one. I became a Vikings fan in the mid 80's so that Bears defense was my first taste of what a scary defense looks like. Everyone knows about the '85 Bears because they won the Super Bowl, but the '84 and '86 defenses were better statistically. In fact the '84 Bears defense was the 3rd best S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. defense of all-time. The '85 Bears were 23rd, and '86 came in at 48th (out of 1805 teams). Well done and am I wrong or does this show that we Cardinals were just a bit bad at offense and defense and potentially on the cusp of greatness if we can fix each just enough to move Northeast on the graph? Yeah as a 4-13 team, it wasn't too bad being right in the middle of the chart, which is average. And you definitely want to be in the northeast quadrant of the chart, which is where the 2021 Cardinals found themselves. Klifford could never close a season though. Your biggest thing this year though is who is going to play QB? 74 year old Colt McCoy xD? The 5th rounder Clayton Tune? Because when will Kyler be back from the ACL, and will he even be the same? Might be a good year to tank in that southwest quadrant haha. 1968 for me. And Yes the St. Louis Cards in the Coryell "era" are my fondest memories! This is my 60th year as a Cardinals Fan. I LOVED THE MID 1970'S Vikings back then were even better than our Cardinals. They beat us in our playoff game. I think it was 33-14 ? So you guys followed them to Arizona huh? Back in the early 2000 the Vikings were always threatening to move to Los Angeles (which team wasn't lol?) but I don't think I would've remained a fan had they done that, so hats off to you guys I guess for maintaining the loyalty. I was never a hockey fan, so the North Stars moving to Dallas didn't bother me too much, and I wasn't around for the Lakers move to Los Angeles. Now I sometimes wish the Vikings would've moved and saved me all the pain lol. And yeah the Vikings beat the Cardinals in the '74 playoffs, 30-14 at the tail end of their Purple People Eater days, and they went on to lose their 2nd straight Super Bowl, and 3rd over all lol. S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. wise, that was a pretty average Cardinals team (ranked 813th/1805). The '76 team was ranked considerably better (55th) although it failed to make the playoffs at 10-4 because you lost to the Redskins twice, giving them the wildcard tie-breaker. But the Skins were also eliminated by the Vikings, which propelled them to their 4th and final Super Bowl loss. 1975 Record was 11-3; only projected to win 5 to 9 games that year. My 1st Full season back home out of the Army since the 1971 season. Ironically a good looking team on paper, but only 886th in this system, with a pretty awful defense (1470th). Why were they only projected to win 5-9 games? That year was sandwiched in between two 10 win seasons. I'd like to see this done for the Cardinal teams of the mid-70s. I'll do the '76 squad. It was at the tail end of a good run, and your best S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. team since 1960, despite not making the playoffs. To fair, only 4 teams made the playoffs back then. I've had some requests to do teams prior to 1960, so if I ever get around to that, we can look at some of those Cardinal teams from the late 40's that looked pretty impressive. How many of you remember them xD? knobby?
