phys.org/news/2023-04-chatgpt-humans-accounting.htmlI am posting this item to help members understand the rapid changes coming to internet processes and quality of information that we read. Language generation by artificial intellgence software, aka Chat-GPT, now exceeds most human's capability to write and comprehend. The newest software is called GPT-4. See the link. Summary: "In March 2023, OpenAI launched its newest AI chatbot product, GPT-4. According to the folks at OpenAI, the bot, which uses machine learning to generate natural language text, passed the bar exam with a score in the 90th percentile, passed 13 of 15 AP exams, and got a nearly perfect score on the GRE Verbal test." In some cases, the text was 100% incorrect and all fabricated by the bots. The casual reader could not detect the errors. The product was then tested on accounting problems. The product failed miserably at math. That result does not mean GPT-4 reached its technical limits, cannot be trusted, nor that nerdy accountant's jobs are safe. Just be wary of what is written and claimed as fact. I am reviewing another article this morning, 4/23, that discusses how algorithms track what we read on our computer screens. Those algorithms pump artifical intelligence-produced text at readers, reinforcing imaginations, beliefs, and theories. There-in lies the danger...most readers think they are in control of their digital lives. If they think that, and that thinking is reinforced by online feeds, they then ' know they are in control' and their minds cannot be changed. The opposite can also become true. Loss of controll can be emphasized. I will update this thread periodically as I run across new bot information. - PutMeIn (I am not a bot)

I think we may have talked about this in a thread that is now missing. You brought it up and I recounted a recent experience with a chat/voice AI that I thought was real....anyhow... This whole AI thing is both interesting and hopeful but freighting at the same time. It has the potential to do good as well as bad. Just one of many examples of good...this is from 2018...no doubt the AI is even better now.. Artificial intelligence rivals radiologists in screening X-rays for certain diseases
The bad can be almost anything, just use your imagination. To me, it's kind of like the internet itself. I can't imagine my life without it, yet I know it has caused problems anywhere from identity theft to misinformation....not to mention, bad people causing havoc by hacking various systems, government and commercial. Pretty much any new tech comes with pros and cons....think splitting the atom. Will AI be more beneficial than not...I honestly don't know. One thing I do know, the genie is out of the bottle. Even if some want to slow down and revaluate, you can bet our adversaries will not. For better or worse, AI is the new tech that may rival the wheel. I guess we really won't know for some time if it's our savior or the end of the world as we know it.... I might have posted this movie link before....but even though the movie is old, it did a good job of exploring the implications of AI. The ending of movie kind of lets you judge for yourself... This quote is taken from this wiki page.... Colossus: The Forbin Project"Colossus later tells Forbin that the world, now freed from war, will create a new human millennium that will raise humankind to new heights, but only under its absolute rule. Colossus informs Forbin that "freedom is an illusion" and that "in time you will come to regard me not only with respect and awe, but with love". Forbin responds "Never!"
I highly recommend watching this movie. Sure, its dated, but it made me think even way back then.

I highly recommend watching this movie. Sure, its dated, but it made me think even way back then. Thanks! I barely recall the movie from the early 70s. It's a great drive-in flick. The movie theme is legendary and applicable to today. The screenwriter preys on people's worst fears involving technology, loss of control, and risk to life itself. Then this happens..."“WARN: THERE IS ANOTHER SYSTEM.”" "Unbeknownst to the Americans, the Russians constructed their own defense computer known as Guardian, and Colossus has detected it. More interesting than that, Colossus wants to establish contact with the other computer. Both sides – American and Soviet – hesitantly agree until they feel that this little episode has played itself out and sever the connection. That displeases both computers, who immediately threaten to fire nuclear missiles at each country until the link is re-established. After their joint display of force, both countries reluctantly re-connect the computers, who soon begin working together, poring over the volumes of human history, and quickly taking action to prevent further wars by issuing plans to take control of every aspect of human life. Forbin and his fellow scientists work together in secrecy, attempting to thwart Colossus before its designs on world domination can come to fruition. But will they stop the supercomputer in time?" The movie hook: Something out there (technology) is smarter than me. I'm fearful of the unknown. Fear is ruining my life. I must terminate what I don't understand. Today's AI and Chat-GPT fears are updated versions of the Colossus and Guardian system fears. I read another article this morning that discusses AI's threats to copyrighted materials: literature, music, and art. Bots can freely manipulate any stored data and produce whatever the programmers allow between the 1s and 0s. In the near future, quantum computers will make digital computers look like the first wheel. Question of the day: Can a robot be sued? No.dc.law.utah.edu/ulr/vol2018/iss5/3/#:~:text=The%20current%20answer%20is%20that%20you%20cannot.%20Robots,causes%20harm%2C%20you%20have%20to%20sue%20its%20owner.

Thats an interesting question....can a robot be sued? Apparently not, for now that seems right.
After all, robots/AI have no money. ( well, unless they start investing in crypto currency....lol ) Still, this brings up some interesting questions. For now, I would have to think the creators would be responsible.
There are a couple of Star Trek episodes delve into some of the legal rights or non-rights of an AI entity or whatever you care to call it.
One was about Data and if he had any rights concerning how he was allowed or not allowed free choice.
The other was the hologram doctor on Voyager that wrote a holonoval. It was about if he had rights over what he wrote.
Both of these examples may seem silly and frankly are right now.
Still, AI's sophistication is expanding exponentially. We may well have to deal with these kinds of questions sooner than we think.
When it comes to copyrighted material, we are already running into problems. AI has already generated unique art, music, essays, and even computer code.....who has the rights? Is it the guy that simply put in some parameters and came up with a masterpiece? I don't know.
One thing to know about AI generated content. It's not just copying and pasting something it if found on the internet, it's taking everything it knows and then generating its own conclusions.
I have seen some art generated from an AI. It's not only unique and unseen before, but it's really good.
Interesting times we live in.

Another thought, how does a defense attorney represent a robot or AI program in a copyright lawsuit? Or provide counsel in any kind of trial? And what kind of justice is there for a robot or AI found guilty. Juries are peers. Do more robots and AI programs fill jury boxes and determine guilt and innocence? We are standing on the edge of a new world. My view of it is confusing. I'm not fearful. But darned curious.

"Juries are peers. Do more robots and AI programs fill jury boxes and determine guilt and innocence?"Thats both funny and maybe fair if you are a AI.....lol. "My view of it is confusing. I'm not fearful. But darned curious."I'm like you. I don't know what to expect. No doubt, there will be problems, but the potential benefits are off the charts. A good AI can analyze countless scenarios and then come up with a solution. Humans just can't do that with the same efficiency. Think computer vs human chess games. It took a while, but computers are pretty much unbeatable now. I know some will say we are playing with fire....but with any technological advance, you could say the same. Like you, I can't predict the future, but I'm dammed curious. I just regret that I may not live long enough to see how it all turns out. Back to the copyrighted stuff and why I was inspired to make another comment. Tonight, this was a segment on NBC news.... This is not YouTube and you may have to wait for the commercial to end and turn on the audio, and even then, I'm not sure how long it will be up. news
If it's not viewable, it's basically how a AI generated music video can seem real and even impersonate famous artists. They gave an example that has since been taken down after 10 million views, but they also showed how a song that sounds just like Katy Perry and Drake can be artificially made.....the music, lyric's, voices, all AI generated. Obviously, AI can be abused. In this area at least, the laws have not kept up with the technology. Am I pro AI or not. I think I am, but for obvious reasons we do need to be careful. I guess you could say, I think the potential to help advance us will overcome the undesirable things....that's my hope at least.
