Thanks for the heads up. While 7.8 is not the biggest....it's bigger than most and if it's in the wrong area, it can be catastrophic.
I'm watching the news now and it doesn't look good.
I don't wish this kind of thing on anyone.

There are some really ancient archeological sites in Turkey that are being worked on currently. Hope they have not been further damaged by this.
Can't recall the names for sure but one was (Gobeckli?) Tepi - probably wrong spelling - thought to be older than the pyramids in Egypt. They looked to be near the epicenter on the crude map I saw
elsewhere online. Maybe another quake back in time caused them to be ruined and abandoned?

I heard a science guy say this was the worst outbreak of slip fault quakes in Turkey in over 100 years. Several smaller 6.0 to 7.5 quakes popped violently as far as 100km away from the 7.8 epicenter today, meaning the big rip in the earth is one of the most widespread in modern times. Most of these quakes are about 10km depth, meaning the shaking is extreme on the surface.
Imagine this 7.8 monster happening in California, Missouri, or South Carolina. Lives lost would top a million and damage would cripple entire states.

Here is one of the original movies about what you are talking about It was part of my geology curriculum at Univ Of South Florida San Francisco the city that waits to die And of course we have the World Series Earthquake www.history.com/this-day-in-history/world-series-earthquake-giants-athletics

The massive quake in Turkey and Syria was detected by ground sensors across Europe and the U.K. Some North American sensors also detected the quake. This quake was indeed a big one.
Watch the short videos of the waves hitting the grounds sensors and lighting up in sequence. From the p/s wave timing, it is possible to determine deep structures that underly the earths surface many hundreds or thousands of miles from the famous Anatolian fault system.
