What did you think of our selections? We had 4-5 good picks but a lot of mediocre players and reaches, and drafted too many defensive backs. Overall, disappointed. Have no idea how this draft was given an A by the experts. Then again, they gave last years draft an A too and we can see it clearly wasn't a great draft.
Who were reaches? Melton, Adamns, Reiman, Jones, Taylor-Demerson
Who was your favorite pick? Marvin Harrison Jr.
Who was the Best Value Pick? Christian Jones
Who Fits The Cardinals best? Marvin Harrison Jr.
What disappointed you? Trading down in the second round and missing on Dejean (Huge Miss!) Too many defensive backs and that too mediocre ones. Didn't do enough to bolster the offensive line. Didn't do enough to boost the Defensive Tackle position.
Where are any holes left on the roster? Yes, several! No Center, No Defensive Tackle (someone who can play inside and stop the run), No Offensive Guard
Give the team Your Draft Grade? B- MHJ, Darius Robinson, Trey Benson, XavierThomas, and Christian Jones were good picks! Rest were mediocre players who were reaches. Too much emphasis on the secondary and didn't draft players from reputable programs who faced good competition in college
"didn't draft players from reputable programs who faced good competition in college." This is a good point often overlooked Andy Isabella was a 2nd rd Pick from Massachusetts led the Nation in Receiving against mediocre competition I gave a B+

If anyone thinks all 12 will make the team they are dreaming. But with 12 picks getting 2-3 Starters and 3-4 backup/special team players, it will have been a Good draft. cbltv, I think you will agree with me that this was an OUTSTANDING DRAFT. Every smart football guru gives the Cardinals an A or A- grade. I think Monti did a great job of upgrading the team roster. I think 10 of 12 guys will stick. That's my forecast. It's the dream of making the big show that motivates the 12 lucky guys. It's always a 50/50 shot in the NFL for rookies to make the roster. First, they have to make the 90-man roster. Then they have survive training camp and beat out a veteran or other rookie to make the active and practice squad rosters. The pressures on these guys is tremendous. Failure is not an option but it happens because the tests are so demanding. Only the best of the best survive. Eventually, even for the guys that survived TC and made the active roster, father time will knock them off the rosters. Or they quit or retire. But at least the players made their dreams come true for awhile. I've made my dreams come true a couple times in my life. It's so sweet to achieve one's dream.

And there you have it. This is why you cannot grade draft classes right off the bat. Heck, its still too early to grade last years draft. As I said, the Cardinals had a bunch of rookies playing on a very bad roster last season, so of course they all looked bad. Heck, the whole team looked bad. NFL, its a team sport, very rare to have one guy who dominates. You can have the best WR in the league, but pointless when you have a crummy QB under center. You can have the best RB in the league, but pointless if you cant pass, cant block and one dimensional. Hard for a LB to do their job when the dline doesnt keep the big boys off of them at the second level. Hard for a CB to cover a WR when the dline doesnt get pressure on the QB and they have all day to sit back and pass from the pocket. Last years draft can still be really good, just have to see them with a good roster. But yeah I wouldnt judge a teams draft class for at least 2-3 years from being drafted. I still say the draft class last year was better than if they just picked Anderson with the first pick. He wouldnt of been much of an improvement and that trade helped Cards have more draft assets this year.

Instead of judging the team by who we got, I think we have to judge based on the fact we had an insane amount of capital. And the real question is, should we have received much more given said capital. I think we should have and I definitely think that some guys like Reignman could have been drafted two rounds lower. So while I don't dislike more than one pick, I do think we vastly underperformed given the capital we had, and perhaps the only reason we are super stoked is we are so used to idiots like Keim drafting. If I were issuing a grade it would have been B minus.

I believe if Monti picked up ONE thing from his tenure with Bill Belichick, it has to be that since there is no "I" in team, anybody that does not embody that concept is spurned. ONLY draft prospects, players and coaches and others that truly live that philosophy and embrace it full-heartedly are welcomed as part of the family. Everbody that has ever watched an NFL football game has seen that there are MANY (especially players!)that OBVIOUSLY struggle mightily with that doctrine. I believe that Monti and Gannon and company are bound to this factor and deeply committed to it and can easily spot any "me first" tendencies, and look upon them with a jaundiced eye. Those players/prospects are immediately passed over as cancerous. I bring all this up because I think it might explain why some players may have been passed over in the draft.

Using your assumption that he would have been available 2 rounds later - Monti would have had 3 other opportunities to draft Tip. Why would he use the selection he did on Tip if he thought he would still be on the board then? He obviously did not think so and it’s easy to read between the lines that other teams were high on him as well.

I know the Cardinals did a lot of work on Newton ... I think the foot injury caused him to slide and Monti also liked Darius Robinson so they couldn't take the chance he wouldn't be there at #35. I would have loved Cooper DeJean but I think Cardinal fans will be happy with Melton as I think Cardinal fans are under-rating him.
I rate the draft a B to B+ with Xavier Thomas and Adams as the wild cards whose play could be better than expected and move me to A- to A.
NOTE: Kool-Aid is not a fit as he is a man-to-man corner which is just not want JG/Rallis want to play.

I'm so salty over trading down and ending up with Melton when could have had DeJean among others. I wonder if Monti expected the run on corners by giving up the 7 slots?
Love the obvious pick, MHJ. Absolute stud, love his nature too. He will be a fixture for many years and an instant star.

I’d love to see how they ranked the CB’s and guards.

Wait, you mean the Cards didn't pick the #1 rated player for each position available in the draft? Dammit man...

DeJean is outstanding athlete, But is he another Simmons? Is he a safety, is he a corner? Probably a safety which we had and added one. Max is a pure corner with excellent speed and cover abilities

Just have to trust the organization feels the players they drafted are the better fit

Gambo just stated on 98.7 that the Cardinals (as did other NFL teams) viewed Cooper DeJean as a safety and had him highly rated but Monti didn't want to spend such a high pick on safety. They had Melton rated above Cooper as a CB and over Kool-Aid. Again Kool-Aid is man-to-man CB - Cards play zone. Here is another very knowledgeable football guy with 40+ Yrs in football and produced many top CB's - who thinks very highly of Max Melton: Hall of Fame Coach says Max Melton is his #1 sleeper cornier in the entire draft

This is tough to grade since no pick has played, made the roster, had success, etc. At first I was pretty critical of their draft other than MHJ, but I need to give it a chance since they know what fits their system, etc. I just hope they get good again. I miss the days when the Cards won like Arians Years, the SB team, and KK's playoff appearance year when they got hot for a while. Having winning pro football here makes the season so much more exciting.
