If Chandler Jones returns the linebacking corps may very well end up one of the best in the league And if he doesn't we are then looking a bit thin at OLB. - Perhaps (without Chandler Jones/ suitable replacement) we wont be utilizing too many standard 3-4 set-up formations?

If CJ isn't playing the nickel and pass rush formations take a bigger hit than the 3-4. CJ's forte isn't run defense, it is pass rush. Dennard is better at run defense although he has been playing opposite of CJ. Personally I don't want think about not having CJ, the defense is better with him.

If CJ isn't playing the nickel and pass rush formations take a bigger hit than the 3-4. Okay, I bow to your better knowledge and judgement. However, what about this option...... A nickel 3-3-5 formation made up of - Kennard - NT - Watt Collins - Hicks * - Simmons * Hicks (the one many have given up on) holds in the center and is briefed to clatter the man coming through the middle with NO coverage in backfield assignments. Apart from using his experience and orchestrating the Defense he allows Collins and Simmonds more freedom to do their own thing (rushing, coverage and anything). I haven't myself discounted Hicks staying a Cardinal and fulfilling a useful role on the field and also assisting with the tutoring of the two young ILB's. However, should his mind already have been made up (to move elsewhere) then I have no qualms in letting him go. Maybe the above nickel set-up is not a viable option and (if so) please call it out as 'rubbish' should you see fit....!

Now that you are the ropes with this conversation: You only listed 5 of the six positions between DL and LBs in a 3-3-5 formation. Kennard, Watt, Collins, Hicks, and Simmons. The sixth would be Golden or Gardeck, I would assume. There is also Vallejo and Fitts, so there is a bit of depth at LB even without Hicks. I see the desire to involve Hicks, but I think that ship has sailed.

Zeke Turner, Fitts and Dimujuke are redundant pieces. Two of the three should be moved to the PS.

The 'sixth man' is my (un-named) Nose Tackle. I see this as a rotational position (to keep the man on the field fresh and ready to perform on every snap). Therefore, you can inset the names of Leki Fotu, Rashard Lawrence and Xavier Williams into this slot (not all at once of course!). Similarly, the DE's can be rotated; hence you have (apart from Kennard and Watt) Zach Allen, Markus Golden, Jordan Phillips and possibly Dennis Gardeck (the latter when he has fully recovered from his injury). Regarding Hicks then you are probably correct (that he will be leaving for pastures new). - Have we any other player on the roster who would be great in a 'sitting role' behind the front three? The key attributes are someone who is 'an excellent reader of the game' plus a ferocious tackler. Good mobility is an advantage, but not a pre-requisite of the job description.

First one on roster that has the qualities you seek is Vallejo and the new one on the roster is a hybrid and that is S Williams formally from the Bengals. Both can sit and stick and are better in coverage than Hicks.
