Hi, Cardinals fans. CBS Sports NFL multimedia reporter Jason LaCanfora reports Haason Reddick and Deone Buchanon are being replaced in the Defensive backfield because they cannot entirely adjust to Cardinals Defensive Coordinator Al Holcomb's scheme. Tough adjustment both players already inherited from James Bettcher, who moved on to be the N.Y. Giants DC. Both Reddick appeared as little as five snaps, and Buchanon one snap, depending on the opponent, in a game! Unfortunate lack of using talent for both the 2014 and 2017 top draft picks of the Arizona Cardinals. More ironic Holcomb began his coaching career as a football graduate assistant at Temple U in Philly, the same school Reddick attended. www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/haason-reddick-13th-overall-pick-by-cardinals-in-2017-is-barely-playing-and-concerns-are-growing/

Both Reddick and Buc saw more playing time last week against Seattle. La Conforna's article, while just published, is only partially correct. It's using data from only the 1st 3 games of the year and was more focused on the Bear's game where Buc and Reddick were only after thoughts by DC Holcomb. Last week we witnessed an uptick in snaps played for both with Buc playing almost the whole game. And Reddick used in passing downs recorded a sack from his LB spot.
Question isn't it Holcombs job to shape his D to the talent's he's got on the team? Or is this another DC that is forcing a square 3-4 player into a round 4-3 hole? I have questions about Holcomb and Wilks and their collective usage of the D they inherited, a Good 3-4 D that they are now dismantling. Just my thoughts on the article and the questions it raises. As I don't expect either 1st rd pick to be traded.

LaCanfora implies that coaches are the problem for high draft picks Reddick and Buchanon? What's next? Blame bad water?

First. I was never an advocate of the Wilks hire. I thought it was a mistake from the get go. I'm also wondering if the Rooney rule had anything to do with the hire ? But then on the other hand. What successful or up and coming coach would have wanted the Cards job at the time. Remember we had NO QB on the roster. That is a recipe for disaster before they even take the job.
Next. If you go back and read D Bucks scouting report you will see he was to slow and didn't have the coverage skills needed to be a safety. Were seeing that now. In Betcher's 3-4 he was covered up by the D lineman. They took on the blocks and let him free to make plays from his LB spot. In a 4-3 you don't get that. In a 4-3 a LB has to be able to take on blocks and disengage. Buck can't do that because of his size. He gets swallowed up by the O lineman most every time, and his coverage skills are exposed.
Reddick is another one who needed to shift positions for the pro game. he was a DE in college. Way to small to play the same position in the pro game. So they made him a LB. It takes years to acquire the instincts to be able to play LB. He hasn't had those year. Now the Cards are paying for him being out of place.
Most football players who change positions, especially at the pro level never amount to much. Sure you will find some who are successful but most are average at best. Their 4 years behind everyone else playing the position there put in. That is a lot of time and reps there lacking.
Neither of those guys ( Buck and Reddick ) should have been 1st round picks. Mainly because both were going to have to change positions at the pro level. It's really hard to do. Most can't do it, or if they do there not very successful.

I don't think Dbuc has what it takes now in this scheme and will be gone after this year.
Reddick is young. I give him some time and I can see him thriving in the whatever scheme he is in. I just have faith in this kid. Perhaps it's blind I acknowledge that. But I see him climbing the mountain here. He was a walk on at Temple and became a first round pick.

I can understand trading D Buc if he’s not going to play much in this new D. Can’t understand getting rid of Reddick though. He had to change positions mid season in his rookie year, and he’s 4 games into his second season learning a whole new scheme? Doesn’t make any sense to me, unless the compensation was good but it probably won’t be
