NFL Free Agency: Is Coby Fleener an Option for the Arizona Cardinals?
The Arizona Cardinals have made a bevy of moves this offseason to help improve their offense. They have upgraded the offensive line both through free agency and the draft, the wide receiver group has been bolstered and there is now some depth behind running back David Johnson.
The one position the team hasn’t added much at is tight end. Yes, the Cardinals did sign Beau Sandland a few weeks ago as a pass-catching tight end, but they could still stand to add some more bodies at the position.
Enter Coby Fleener.
Fleener, the former Indianapolis Colt and New Orleans Saint, now finds himself as a free agent after the Saints decided to cut ties with him. From the very beginning, the five-year, $36 million deal from New Orleans seemed a bit rich for a guy that was always very dependent on Andrew Luck. Because of that, two years into his five year contract, Fleener is looking for a new home.

He’s a pass catching TE with health/concussion issues so I doubt it. We have Gresham and Seals-Jones for that.

Hey Silly - Glad you joined us here! More and more of the former forum's denizens are showing up as the days pass, and that's great.
Re: Fleener -- I betting his price is far too high for the money the team has available, and they also may be hoping another good OL last minute cut may be signed with any remaining funds. That's just a guess though, and I can see your point. I would not be surprised if several of the current FAs and tryouts make the team, including another TE candidate. I commented on another thread about one of the rookie OLs being a former TE, very agile and relatively speedy. He's another one to watch closely. Cunningham? I can't be sure of his name at the moment. Leaky memory. But I hope he sticks since the OL is so critical to the team's plans - and he can catch the ball.

Doesn't fit the blocking role tight end we need. I don't think the Cards are interested in him.

Times like these, I wish we still had Fells for blocking.

Does he get flagged for holding once or twice a game?? Keim can keep the ball rolling by restructuring Gresham's contract or fixing that pile O mess. (notice I still didnt cuss when I could have) PS ......And since were at it, keim should admit the Gresham signing was a no no.

We have 7 TEs on the roster for now. Let's get thru Rookie camp and see what shakes out from there. That said SK and now HC Wilks both have stated the same objective that was here with BASK, churn the bottom of the roster. Things will heat up a bit on the FA market when the June 1st cuts start happening. Rookie camp starts in the morning!.

It's nice to read about these kids who are UDFA. But lets fact it. Most are camp fodder. Most will be out of football after training camp. There is a reason why each and every one of these kids didn't get drafted. For every Tony Jefferson or RSJ there are 100 kids you never hear about again. Maybe one or two will make the practice squad or one actually makes the 53 man roster. With the way their written up you would think each and every one are 2nd or 3rd round material. There not. There not even 6th or 7th round material. That's why most if not all weren't drafted in the later rounds. Every once and a while you get a gem. One who for some reason everybody missed on. Just like Jefferson.

UDFA DE Alec James has been getting more hype than actual draft picks Chris Campbell or Kory Cunningham. Nothing is a lock, but I think just as momentum goes, Alec will be on the 53.

If he can do it when it counts, great underdog story. Some are great in practice but never can cut it in actual games. I'm counting on the new coaches to pick the best regardless of experience or lack of it. But like the rookies, we who second guess things won't have familiar coaches to praise or criticize this season. It's all a clean slate - now. Feels good so far though.
I think at this point things can change for better or worse for all of the candidates as time passes. Too bad, but many will fall by the wayside. A few, having experienced an NFL training camp but cut, may improve themselves and make it the next year - but it's rare. I don't know about you, but I always hope the interesting guys make it, and we have a lot of those this time around. Too bad the squad size is so limited, so soon.
Maybe that upstart football league will make it for that reason? (can't even think of the name, now) Or maybe the NFL will finally adopt farm teams, ala baseball. There sure are lots of young players who could stock those sorts of teams, and late bloomers always pop up. Sorry for straying from the topic. . .
