Included is this line of interest: "... while releasing long snapper Joe Shimko." I'm not sure whether to be surprised or not, since Shimko was the consensus top LS in recent drafts. This must mean that the coaches are sure we're OK long term with Aaron Brewer, but shouldn't they have known that prior to the draft? Puzzling.
IMHO

IMHO I agree, this is puzzling to me as well. This is his resume from 2023.... • Winner of the Patrick Mannelly Award - given to the nation’s top long snapper. • A second-team All-American according to the AFCA. • Most game-experienced player on the team - he was the Wolfpack’s long snapper in 62 career games. • A semifinalist for the Jason Witten Award. • In 607 career snaps, has never had a bad one.• Named to the preseason watch list for the Weurffel Trophy, the Patrick Mannelly Award and the AllState Good Works Team. • Raised over $400k for charity in the past two summers, he has donated over $55k to GiGi’s Playhouse in Raleigh. He is young and cheap. He sounds perfect to me. Did he mess up in training camp and somehow manage to rub JG the wrong way?

IMHO
Shimko was a UDFA nothing ventured...absolutely no draft capital to secure him and kick the tires and this doesn't mean the end of Shimko in the desert.

Shimko may still be a future option in the desert. Prater is 40 plus...LS is very important in his success.

Shimko may still be a future option in the desert. Prater is 40 plus...LS is very important in his success.I understand that point, but aren't we in a youth movement already? Brewer may be in fine condition and normally there is not much risk of harm for any LS, but he's been in the league 13 years. Compared to Shimko, he has not that much longevity remaining to be utilized, as good as he is and may yet be.
I wonder whether it might be a concession to Prater's wishes? I can also understand that, but Prater has shown some signs of starting the
slide to the down side of the curve, and he's even older than Brewer.
The puzzling part to me is our reliance on Prater and Brewer again
with seemingly no need to look or plan ahead. Money IMO has no bearing on Shimko vs. Brewer. And I would think that another team will pick Shimko up before long, even if it might be some warm weather team like the Raiders (which would qualify as "desert". ) But I think he's gone for the Cardinals.
Maybe it came down to having other more pressing needs and the final 53 just had no room for what might have been foresight. Or maybe the new kickoff rules were felt to add some time to Prater's productive playing life.
It's all guesswork at this point - and we are only spectators and speculators.
IMHO

Shimko has two major things working against him. Youth and size. Monti and staff are all over long and strong for players. Doesn't matter how strong of college career Shimko had, he is a bit undersized and as mentioned...depending on what the staff thinks...2024 isn't a year to mess with LS and kicker. Shimko would have had to clearly shown better and more consistent side by side with Brewer. It is so hard to have San Diego State players not make the Cards roster. LOL My boy Cam Thomas looks to be clearing cuts as well. Go Aztecs!!!

Release of WR Daniel Arias means Chisena's odds of being on 53 man roster or PS have improved appreciably. I will be extremely disappointed if Chisena as a 6'3" over 200 lb WR (former track star) who has run a 4.32 40 doesn't make this team over Zach Pascal. Here is an excerpt from this article and please note Chisena has played over 470 special teams snaps since he entered the NFL. Chisena delivered his biggest impact on special teams. "My biggest role, I would say, was at the gunner position on punt team," Chisena said. "Running down and trying to force fair catches or pin the ball inside the 10. "We did pretty well in that phase of the game," Chisena added. "It's something I had a lot of fun with and really enjoyed and was something that I hope I can bring to the special teams here in Minnesota." Chisena - Speed to Burn

The coaches know... If you are looking for who made the decision on Brewer v. Shimko, I bet it was Assistant Head Coach and ST Coordinator Jeff Rodgers. Rodgers has credibility. He's been making player decisions for over a decade with many teams. Cost was one GM consideration among others by the coaches: Brewer signed a one-year contract worth $1,377,500 that includes an $83,750 signing bonus and a roster bonus of $83,750 to be paid in Week 1, e.g., September 8th. If Brewer doesn't get the job done in 2024, Shimko might be available for a similar contract, or a few dollars less, later this year. The roster cut to 53 guys, plus the Practice Squad (16 players maximum; players who have not accrued at least 9 games in an NFL season; up to 4 players who have accrued no more than 2 NFL seasons; and up to 6 players with no limitations on experience.), had a lot more to do with Shimko's release now. Shimko now has a few days to get a tryout with another team prior to the late August bloodbath. I'm trying to figure out what other reason there could be to let Shimko go. His resume certainly is impressive. So is Brewer's, by the way. Size likely was not a consideration to release Shimko. The NFL rules protect the long snappers with their head down on the snap. It's like a no-touch rule for a fair catch. Brewer is not that old. He turned 34 a few weeks ago in July.
