After the game, JG was impressed (as I was) with Darius Robinson going up against the Saints 1st teams but he also stated the OL was "leaky." My assessment with a stock up/down evaluation was: Stock UP:- Michael Carter RB -- who will be the 4th running back Demercado or Dallas ?
- RABBIT -- flashed especially reading his keys on running plays or RB's out of the backfield - very fast.
- 2023 Draft Class: Stills - Tune - Pappoe. I have heard positive things coming out of TC on Gaines but did he play ?
- 2023 Waiver pickup Roy Lopez looked good being disruptive and the 2024 DL will definitely be much improved from 2023 DL which featured Phil Hoskins as a started and tonight he had one of the very costly 5 yd penalties on the Saints last drive.
- CB's - JG cut his teeth in the coaching profession being a secondary coach and it shows up in Starling Thomas - Clark - Hall (Hall might be a sneaky pickup by Monti as in 2022 he played every game (including 9 starts) for the Falcons. Of course I want to see Garrett Williams and Melton though JG is sitting starters for these pre-season games so I hope to hear good things out of INDY from the scrimmages this week.
- Xavier Thomas - flashed with good "get off" and looked fast.
- Darius Robinson - disruptive force against the Saints first teamer ... could actually vie for NFL Defensive Rookie of Year.
- I mentioned a couple of days ago that WR Xavier Weaver was flashing at TC to gain one of the 6 WR slots for the 53 man roster -- can't say the same thing for late round draft pick WR Palmer.
- WR Chisena had a VERY good game and has probably solidified himself on the PS.
Stock Down:- QB Desmond Ritter - OL didn't help but other than his running ability didn't show much. Paul Calvisi and Darren Urban thought Tune was outperforming Ridder during TC and tonight's game only furthered the separation between the 2 backup QB's.
- 2024 3rd Round Draft Pick - OL Adams. In college he played a lot of tackle this past year so I expected a LOT more ability to move his feet in pass protection; however that was NOT on display during the game.
- TE Whiteheart - dropped an easy ball that would have gained 20 yds or so and would have driven the Cardinals deep enough to at least get 3 points.
- Refs - back judges below a couple of PI calls that if the game had been a regular season one with Cards losing at the end ... fans would have been livid.
P.S. Just like last year, Hollywood Brown during the Chiefs pre-season games despite being out there with limited snaps. Out of KC he might have a AC Joint injury in his shoulder which could put his playing game #1 of the season in jeopardy. I was very impressed with the secondary that was on the field yesterday...Rabbit and Hall played very physical games...should Baker or Thompson go down this season, I don't think there would be that much of a drop down in Safety play...what type of Safeties are Rabbit and Hall? Strong? Free? Keep in mind that Baker started 12 games and Jalen 15 games...so both of our starting safeties missed some games...
I actually feel a little bad about Clark...last season he was thrown in as either the #1 or #2 CB against the first strings of our opponents...he not only was a Rookie but a 6th round draft pick...I thought he played well last season when he played...compare these stats last season..
Game Starts:
Marco Wilson: 11
Antonio Hamilton: 9
Kei'Trel Clark: 7
Combo Tackles: Marco Wilson: 52 Antonio Hamilton: 40 Kei'Trel Clark: 43
Solo Tackles: Marco Wilson: 41 Antonio Hamilton: 29 Kei'Trel Clark: 37
Tackles for Loss: Marco Wilson: 0 Antonio Hamilton: 0 Kei'Trel Clark: 2
Passes Defended: Marco Wilson: 4 Antonio Hamilton: 11 Kei'Trel Clark: 4
As you can see above...it seems that Clark had equal or better stats than Marco Wilson and Antonio Hamilton...keep in mind that Clark started 4 less games than Wilson and 2 less games than Hamilton...
Do I think that Clark is #1 or #2 Caliber CB...not at all...I see him as either a decent backup should our #1, #2 or #3 of our starting CB's go down...right now I see our CB's as this...Bunting, Garrett and Melton as the first 3 starters, unless Starling takes the #4 CB position...
I do think that Clark and Starling are very close in talent...so even if Clark becomes the #5 CB...we should be fine...with the depth we have...
So, how does Clark start off this season? Playing against the first string of the Saints...I do not know what happened last year with Clark that they quit playing him...I think whatever happened was not about field play but something else...
You all have to realize that we know what a true #1 CB is like as in freaking SHUTDOWN CORNER...when we bring up Patrick Peterson...we do not have a CB on our roster that is even close to that...that is fine with me...we just need a CB Corp...that is good not a top 5...our CB Corp last season was one of the worst we have ever had....
I really wanted to see Garrett and Melton play yesterday...I am not going to worry about our CB Corp yet until the regular season starts and we see what we actually have...

This “game” was not the Cardinal team we will be watching on Sundays, as the starters were in street clothes. But it was a good evaluation opportunity for QB2 and the players fighting for a spot.
Tune looked pretty good, but he looked pretty good in pre-season 2023 as well but crumbled in his one real game. It would be nice to see Ridder click, as he has a more similar skill set to Murray and it would be easier to keep the same playbook with him.
I appreciated the tackling. Guys are playing for a job so you expect it, but hopefully it represents something Gannon is instilling in the defense.
Weaver and Palmer at WR…Weaver looked better but Palmer got robbed by at least one missed P.I. He wasn’t getting any separation though.
Carter looked hungry at RB and I think the Seattle FA RB makes the team for special teams, so Demercado vs Carter will be tight.
Our TE’s lower on the totem pole don’t look like keepers.
I’m nervous about so many of our starters potentially playing at real game speed and real hitting in Game 1. I strongly prefer seeing a quarter per game with the first team as a unit.

To be fair Paris, Brown, Hjalte, Hernandez, Williams and Beachum the top six OL players didn't play. I thought I saw Beachum in for a few series? I can't dispute that he played a bit...if he did..mum was his performance...which is good for a OL player.

Rabbit and Hall will be the backup safeties to Budda/Jalen Thompson and the corners will be:
1) Murphy Bunting #1 outside CB 2) Max Melton #2 outside CB 3) Garrett Williams- slot corner 4) Starling Thomas 5) Elijah Jones 6) K'Trel Clark
Jaden Davis - PS
I do think after the scrimmages and game next weekend vs. the Colts ... Monti/JG will have probably decided on about 51 of the 53 man roster with only a couple of spots up for grabs and discussions on what to do with the RB room.
P.S. I am hoping Xavier Thomas gets quite a few snaps in the Colts scrimmages and if JG does not play the starters in the game ... then XT should get at least 15+ snaps in the pre-season game to see how many pressures. JG has made a comment that the scrimmages are "safer" and more controlled than the pre-season games which is why I think the starters will sit again for the pre-season game. We almost saw Tune get hurt by some dumb A### 4th string DL for the Saints going low toward his knee. The private scrimmages also can solidify guys positions on the PS or 53 man roster and then NOT playing them in pre-season games to prevent the other 30 teams getting tape to see Cardinal players whom the brain-trust wants to sneak onto the PS.

I truly believe that we can win 9 games this season...
Kyler played 8 of 17 games. If he can play 17 games this season, surely we can double our wins from last season from 4 to 8 wins...just from seeing what I saw in the preseason game against the Saints...our defense is already improved...especially the secondary depth...because most of the secondary players that played yesterday are going to be depth players, not starters.
Our depth players in the secondary did not let the first string of the Saints score any points...I have to believe that the same thing would have happened had our first string secondary had been playing...for our second/third string defense to be able to contain Derek Carr, Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave for the short time they played...I was happy with that...
Derek Carr 2 Completions of 6 Targets, 12 Passing Yards Alvin Kamara 2 Carries for 3 Yards rushing Chris Olave 4 Targets, 1 Reception for 10 yards
More than likely...we are not going to see any of our starters in the preseason...I thought MHJ was going to play more than 3 snaps...and I thought they would target him for at least one of those 3 snaps...I am thinking they just put him in the game for the benefit of the fans attending the game...I will not be surprised if they do the same thing again for the next two preseason games...or maybe that is all we will see of MHJ during preseason...

Playing it close to the vest in preseason? That would be a reasonable tactic - IMHO.

Likes: He kept his feet moving forward Dislikes: Hesitation on the outside runs He addressed your dislike...he remembered changing direction in practice and the coaches jumped on him for losing yards due to a bad choice...in the Saints game he bounced outside and the coaching reminders kicked in and he put his shoulders square up field and chose to go up field instead of risk trying to outrun the defender to the sideline...the indecision was obvious and the post game comments made sense. He said the NFL is much faster...so he is figuring things out.
