I'm not sure how a feel about this. Playing a series with the starters seems pretty harmless and I'm trying to recall any team that sat out their QB for preseason only for him to light it up in game one. In 2022, 11 starting QBs sat out the preseason and only 3 of them won their first games.
I'm leaning more towards being ok with this decision that not.

I never like this strategy. I remember complaining about KK and Keim doing this with Kyler in 2022’s pre-season. We were coming into that year with so much promise and fear of injury to their star QB led them to sitting Kyler through that pre-season. I pointed out our first game was against K.C. and star QB Mahomes was playing significant time in their pre-season. Sure enough, we got creamed in the opener on Sept 11, 2022.
44-21 Chiefs. 360 yards passing and 5 TD’s for Mahomes to 193 yards and 2 TD’s for Kyler, and much of that garbage time stats for us. We weren’t prepared and it set off a 3-6 start to the season after making the playoffs the previous season.
You can be smart about protecting your stars in pre-season without sitting them. If I were Kyler I’d remind them about 2022.

Let me ask it this way…KM plays a couple of meaningless pre-season series…blows knee out…gone for season or gets a high ankle sprain that sidelines him for 5-6 weeks…everyone ok 👌 with that??? The preseason means nothing…they are already playing 17 regular season games…and the first 2-3 serve as the “preseason” if you really think about it. Sit him. Season is already too long…you have to hold your breath watching these preseason games…and practices for that matter. Plus the amount of money invested on seeing if KM is your franchise QB…requires you to get him to the season that really counts in making that determination…IMO.

A guess: This has more to do with Tune and Ridder than with Kyler.
I suspect Gannon is comfortable with what he sees with Murray, but less so with either of the backups - thus wants to see more from the latter during what passes for game conditions - then finalize which is better as QB2, or neither.
I would hope that by the last preseason game a decision has been made, and JG will put Murray in as a warmup for the real season games to follow.
IMHO

Either a series or two pre-season or no pre-season and K1 will be ready to go to upstate NY for the opener

From what I heard through multiple podcasts...neither backup has looked particularly good. I'm more interested to see how K1 performs against the Colts D in practice.

Is this like a "What if Kyler Sucks?" thread? I think this stands on its own. You did post this first though.

I do not think Kyler is a fan of playing preseason games. To your point, I think there will be more value when they practice the Colts than there would be in any minimal series in preseason game. They can at least protect the QB in the scrimmage, but still get valuable reps against another team. Does not matter what I think anyhow as he is not going to play. I would just not worry about it too much. He did not get any preseason games last year and came in and did alright.

His knee injury was non-contact. Practice is extremely important before real games. Pre-season games are three chances to practice at near game speed for Week 1. You can be smart and just work a QB and the first teamers together for a few series. You can call plays that protect the QB. No designed runs. Quick slants and passes. I didn’t like this in 2022 and DON’T like it this year.

I think this is great news!!
It means that JG is so confident of winning the first few games that he doesn't feel K1 needs any preseason work against competition to completely dominate the Bills, the Rams, and the Lions! If the Cards win the first three games, it's going to be a playoff season!
Can't wait for the season to start!

Smart move IMHO......get a good look at who's behind him in case he goes down during the season for however long.
