The First Cardinals Depth Chart Of 2024 Aug 05, 2024 at 02:35 PM NewUrbanMug Darren Urban/Word From The Birds azcardinals.com With the Cardinals playing their first preseason game on Saturday, their first press release of the season is also out. As usual, that means the first depth chart. As always, it comes with the usual caveats, that it is all fluid, and it might not always match what is seen on the field. But it's a start on what the roster could potentially look like. There are no surprises after what has been seen at camp (when everyone is healthy). -- Evan Brown is RG1 when Hjalte Froholdt is C1 -- Starling Thomas V is currently the third starting CB with Mex Melton with the second unit. -- The Cardinals list three receivers with the first unit: Marvin Harrison Jr., Michael Wilson and Greg Dortch -- Dennis Gardeck is first unit at outside linebacker with BJ Ojulari out There are some second-unit-and-beyond spots to note. Trey Benson is listed as RB2, and right now Michael Carter is listed behind Benson, Emari Demercado and DeeJay Dallas, and the latter shows how important special teams impact can be on a roster spot. Jon Gaines II is listed as the backup center, and Isaiah Adams is listed as the backup left guard. Desmond RIdder is listed as QB2 over Clayton Tune, although Tune has gotten most of the second-unit reps of late. Dortch and Dallas (they are listed as or) are each potential first-team kickoff and punt returners. Depth chart 2024

The only starting rookie is Marv. Strange...since Robinson has been crushing it at camp.
Also strange to see Carter so far back in the depth chart.
I wouldn't be surprised if our backup QB wasn't on this roster. QB 2 and 3 haven't looked good so far.

It isn't a real cutdown...so there are head games going on with depth chart posted

I was curious to see if Zay Jones as a veteran with similar size to Wilson might take WR2 from Wilson, or maybe take WR3 from Dortch, though Dortch brings a more unique set of skills and options.
Higgins remained ahead of Reiman at TE but IMO that just means he’s the main receiving TE after McBride. Reiman is the blocking TE.
15 rookies on the depth chart. Wow! They may not be the starters right off the bat, but opportunity is there.
Around 90 players here. Several of these rookies will end up on the practice squad. 53 will make final roster and 16 practice squad. About 20 cut, plus some more cut as new guys come in and roster churn continues, mostly from columns 3 and 4.
I for one am happy to see Benson already listed as RB2. They must like what they see. We need him to get experience and have success, as we may move on from Conner next season.
I really hope Adams, Gaines and even Christian Jones pan out at tackle, guard and center. I’m not thrilled with the depth on the Oline. I continue to believe a signing of center Connor Williams could give us two good to potential top 5 27 year old veteran centers who could compete and focus on one position, allowing Gaines and Adams to focus on becoming our young guards of the future. Get Williams on injury discount for 4 years before Seattle grabs him.
All in all, our offense is YOUNG! Looking at next year and assuming Benson become RB1 and one of the young guards steps up, our starters on offense may be Kyler (26), Benson (22), WR’s MHJ (21) and Wilson (24), TE’s McBride (24) and Reiman (22), LT Paris (23), LG Adams (24), C Froholdt (27), RG Gaines (25) and RT Jonah Williams (26). Kyler would be the oldest! This would allow us to really address the defense next off season.

The biggest shocker is of course Michael Carter 5th on the RB depth list. The problem for him is Demercado and Dallas play on S/T's and with new renewed emphasis on these units across the NFL, it could mean trouble for Carter. I wonder if Monti regrets signing Deejay Dallas so early in FA when Trey Benson fell to them in Rd. #3. One other position was seeing CB S. Thomas above Max Melton though the former has really flashed at camp and was a great UDFA pickup by Monti last year. Additionally Max Melton this past week has been nursing a minor injury so often times coaches use the depth chart to motivate guys who are a little "dinged" to get back on the practice field. Everyone (including Wolfley on 98.7) has been commenting on how good Marquis Hayes looks so his position on the depth chart was a little perplexing. I wouldn't worry about Darius Robinson since JG/Rallis want to rotate their DL and Robinson will get snaps all across the DL. Darius Robinson will also get almost 100% of the snaps on passing downs because he is by far their most explosive DL player with the ability to get sacks. As an aside, both Lorenzo Alexander and Kyle Vander Bosch were on 98.7 yesterday and separately both made these 2 comments: - How much bigger, stronger and athletic the DL room looks than last year.
- Both mentioned how Darius Robinson "pops" in one-on-one drills and how explosive with power in knocking the OL back. On 98.7 there was discussion about Robinson coming out of a FOUR-point stance and how unusual this is for a pass rush; however KVB discussed that some old school DL pass rush guys have used this technique. It is very difficult for an OL to get any proper hand placement on the defender who is exploding from such a low position.

Adding to CardFanQC's comment on Darius Robinson. Chis Simms had him projected as a 18-32 pick or 1st-rounder. He called him a Greek God Statue. As a DT he has the best violent hands and strength and disruption. Chis said he is a bit stiff, but throws OL players out of the way. The offseason confirms Monti's correct choice of DT in the 2024 draft.
He is a 3 or 5 tech as his best positions and can single gap or two gap defend with his physical and mental abilities. The hand strength, how he engages tight to the OL player and then bench-presses them out of position is impressive. He is a true student of the game and wants to be ROY.
Collier, Lopez, Jones and Robinson make a unique IDL pass rush combination. Remember JG uses 3 interior DL and 1 OLB for most pass downs and drops 1 OLB into coverage. They change up off that, but this recipe is their bread and butter. The days of the 5-6 pass rushers per play are very limited in the desert with JG. JG has his 6 man IDL man rotation...2024 defense will be much better.
